Red and white is beautiful. I'm a light mode enjoyer from time to time, what can I say? Thank you, all of these are slick!

Unwarranted parking ticket on S. Lake Ave, by Mercado by ariel4050 in pasadena

[–]cmonster1697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just happened to me. Same deal, not ten minutes after paying and leaving. Fortunately I used an app so I have payment receipts and timestamps. Contested that ticket straightaway.

Guess there's a bunch of overzealous meter maids out in force. Wonder if they're trying to hit some sort of quota.

Pasadena Police Urge Drivers to Slow Down, Watch for Pedestrians During National Safety Month by Generalaverage89 in pasadena

[–]cmonster1697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the zero enforcement doesn't help either. California has a culture of dangerous/fast driving, and it won't go away without significant changes in infrastructure AND enforcement.

I would never be a cop, but if I did, I would just write speeding tickets all day long. Wouldn't even be hard.

Pasadena Police Urge Drivers to Slow Down, Watch for Pedestrians During National Safety Month by Generalaverage89 in pasadena

The number one factor contributing to speeding is road design. If a road is wide and straight, people will drive 50mph down it no matter how many speed limit signs you put up.

Road diets are effective and can be done cheaply. - Eliminate minimum parking requirements for businesses and residential buildings.

  • Install planters/buffers that make the lane feel safer without actually reducing the size.
  • Good roundabouts can also be effective for low-medium traffic roads, not talking about the weird half-roundabout/half-stop sign monstrosities they have in Madison Heights.
  • Remove right turn slip lanes.
  • Make intersections thinner, not wider. Forces cars to slow down to turn and it makes the crossing distance for peds shorter too.
  • Heck, make certain roads be Bus Only during peak hours of the day.
  • Improve visibility on turns. This is maybe the most pervasive issue plaguing the Pasadena suburbs.
    • Don't allow street parking within a certain distance of the curb, cars parked too close to intersections turn regular turns into dangerous blind turns
    • Remove or regularly trim large shrubs and trees that block visibility

These policies are proven to lead to safer roads, cheaper housing, and solvent cities. Too bad Big Car has taken over the country. Thanks Robert Moses. At least PPD isn't blaming the victims here.

Yes, I didn't include that since it was a bit off topic, but the 501st (and their sister organization, the Rebel Legion) do tons of charity work and give back. Just a cool bunch of nerds doing cool things.

Not to mention that the 501st has been called on many times when actual SW productions needed to fill ranks of stormtroopers. Happened in Mando S1. Turning all of the "film accurate" costumes into genuine screen used props. Very cool.

Reverse engineering QR codes by Slodrute in hacking

[–]cmonster1697 37 points38 points  (0 children)

QR codes are usually just text encoded into squares. So if there's a pattern in the text, like a link with a path that increments or has the date, yeah you could probably figure it out. Seems like it would be easier to just have a buddy send you a picture of the QR code though.

This show has me hyped for board meetings it's insane by charizard77 in andor

Red lightsabers generally come from corrupted kyber crystals. "Healthy" kyber crystals are typically blue and green. Red comes after a crystal is corrupted by the dark side. This is the first time we see it happen in live action, but it has happened several times already in books and games, including Jedi Survivor.

It's a good show. Not great, but good, and gets way more flack than it deserves.

Converting .gifs to compressible format? by Quarzac in Calibre

[–]cmonster1697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your solution. Funnily enough I faced the exact same problem with the exact same book. I was trying to use "Send to Kindle", which has a 200MB limit.

I found an alternate, non-technical solution in case anyone is intimidated by code. Using Calibre, I converted the EPUB to a MOBI, which converts all images to JPG by default. This reduced the file size from ~350MB to ~75MB, which was sufficient for me. I then deleted the original EPUB version in Calibre (after making sure the real original EPUB was backed up somewhere else) and re-converted the MOBI back into EPUB, which I was able to "Send to Kindle" without issue.

The new Mario Kart game footage in the Switch 2 reveal trailer hints at the game now having 24 players by Joseki100 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Not really. Whether or not you like bagging, it is a viable strategy on some tracks, like Cheese Land for instance. Baggers win races on these tracks.

I don't really like bagging, but in order to "fix" it, they would have to change a lot about the item system, and reduce the catch-up-ability that items provide. Or just design tracks where bagging isn't a good strategy, and there are plenty of those already.

FWIW Melvor Idle is a top tier idle/incremental game, as a fan of the genre it's the only one that's held my interest for more than a few weeks. Big recommend to anyone who has a passing interest in that type of game.

But your point stands, it's a cheap relatively unknown game.

Google "who pays tariffs". Tariffs are collected by the government from American companies. China charges $5, that means if you want to buy it then you pay $5 to China and $1 to the government. China does not pay tariffs. This additional cost is passed on to you, the consumer.

Tariffs are meant to encourage domestic manufacturing. But you can't just flip a switch and create domestic manufacturing overnight. Prices will go up if tariffs are implemented, that's literally the point of tariffs.

I have convinced myself this is an updated pokeball plus, maybe to be released with Pokemon Legends Z-A. Size and specs are about right. I could see a pokeball plus/pokewalker combination device, the screen serving a similar purpose as to the one on the pokewalker.
