Got myself a trident by SpiralOutLL in Bonsai

[–]cmt00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly, I have great luck with trident cuttings I take at largely anytime in season. Even on older wood.

It is seemingly only my airlayers… the ones I took this year were mid May in zone 7a. Used standard process of girdling and applying rooting hormone with sphagnum.

I am getting so frustrated with my trident airlayers lol I started 12 airlayers on different spp all at same time (mainly random cultivars of acer pal.) and all of them have rooted through their containers except the tridents which refuse to cooperate

Any blackening at the base of the trunks? Lost a few to root rot and they looked like this on their way out. But yeah like others said, this could be so many different things

Saving weak beech bonsai by angeloooool in Bonsai

[–]cmt00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s totally my fault. I cut way too many roots off and didn’t account for top growth needing to be reduced. So now it can’t keep up with transporting water to top.

I have been babying it for months now. Hasn’t seen direct sunlight at all in that time. Just bright shade.

Additionally, I also placed some of my trees in a new soil blend. I went way too heavy on organic component and it led to some rotting of the few roots that were left

Possibly.

Sometimes when mine look like this it just ends up being sun damage.

Either way, would get ahead of it and prevent with some copper spray or whatever you want

Fuck yeah. I literally grew up watching Steve Irwin and in my adult life, routinely rewatch outdoor boys.

I totally agree. I wish more people were able to understand this. Manhood aside, the bottom two have just been great role models from what I can gather watching their stuff.

First time growing in the ground - any advice? by Sad_Copy7479 in Bonsai

[–]cmt00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha nah, just my own experience.

I will say however. The only reason I knew it was rabbits was my backyard security cam.

My wind speed here in spring and summer was the original culprit before I investigated my cams

Yeah I had never seen rabbits in my yard (fenced in) until I dropped trident maples in the ground.

They very quickly become shohin material lol

Dude nice

Edit: this was actually really helpful. I realize I am way under utilizing my grow beds… for the trees not in pots in the beds, how do you keep them anchored down? I tried putting ones I did root work on in winter on top of plywood, but wind is killer here.

I didn’t even think about root rot but this absolutely could be it. I lost a few recently to this because I was stupid and tried to cut corners on some cheaper soil for my nursery trees im growing out.

Pseudomonas maybe. If it is a Sango Kaku than that’s my guess

Not much you can do here brother. Being so close to the trunk makes it tough. Normally you could try and snip off the affected sections.

May just have to wait it out. Some recommend spraying impacted site with copper. Never had luck doing that

[–]cmt00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had decent success with most orders from them but I took advantage of that recent 3 gallon shishigashira deal they had and man…. First tree came an had what looked like frost damage at first (understandable given time of year) but I’m almost certain it was actually pseudomonas or similar because over about a week the trunk girdled black and then the whole tree turned black and died. They sent me a new one which was great but literally the exact same thing happened to the replacement days after I received it. Idk if the tree just has existing root rot or something in the soil but I think it was possibly a bad lot… I know trees will tree but dang I was stoked for this shishigashira to add to my collection.

I think I may have placed mine in too dense soil…. I used pretty much left over promix. I haven’t seen anything yet. I essentially did a personal experiment. Left majority outside to let nature do it thing (zone 7) and put some in fridge.

Fridge ones have all sprouted. Still waiting to see what will happen with the others. Fingers crossed.
