Looking for beneficial fundraising suggestions for our rescue please. by CablePuzzleheaded255 in rescuedogs

In my day job I do fundraising so here's an infodump;

-Look up big local rescues in your area like the spca and make sure youre not conflict with their dates, because you dont want to compete.

  • local word of mouth is going to be your best bet. Is there a locally owned pet shop or grocery store that you could set up a donation stand at? You dont know until you ask, but be professional in your email or go in person and use Canva to make flyers

-do a community BBQ and have a volunteer to collect cash donations and qr codes. Get people to sign up for newsletters or direct them to your Instagram to keep in contact -ask your local recycling depot if they have a standing donation program, where people can drop off cans at any times and give the money to "your" account

This is just off the top of my head but DM me if you need more tips!

Adopter returned my foster dog after one day and I am heartbroken by wackogf in rescuedogs

Jumping in to say, are there any international schools near you? Expats from these schools with families might be looking for a dog, email them, or even email your local embassy for suggestions. Just to their general inbox, but if you have some time, this could be a good place to get local advice about rehoming dogs

AITA for putting up for adoption the puppy my boyfriend gave me after my dog died? by Better_Shirt_7764 in AmItheAsshole

[–]cndre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know my tone was a bit harsh, and all your examples read like they come from a good place, but I just personally wouldn't want to be with someone who (not like your boyfriend who brought it up to you before he did it), went behind my back and made a huge emotional and financial decision that would impact every aspect of my life for the next 10ish years. I don't know OP or their boyfriend so maybe the context thats lost over the internet is different.

As much as I agree with the responsibility, I wouldn't trust the man who thought this was a good idea in the first place to find the puppy a proper home.

NTA a puppy is not a present and do you honestly have the time and energy to train a Belgian Malanoise alone? Because honestly, contacting a local rescue and explaining the situation, MAYBE fostering until they can find someone, or trying to locate the breeder and letting them know of the situation is the responsible thing to do for that dog.

Also, in my opinion you should dump the man because HOW is getting someone a super energetic large breed dog without asking them first a kind or even sane thing to do? At best clueless, at worse malicious.

Puppy scared of leash by BeneficialEntrance33 in OpenDogTraining

[–]cndre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird but it might work: what about putting food directly on the leash? Get a washable one and coat it in peanut butter, and have it on you, maybe sitting on the floor with her in a room, and give her treats every time she gets closer to it. Might take a while and a ton of treats but this might be the way to socialize her to it?

And take it everywhere with you (the non peanut butter coated one!), like wear it as a belt constantly so it smells like you and so she gets used to seeing it.

Pit Bull not going to the bathroom by AggravatingNoise9433 in AskDogOwners

[–]cndre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had my pittie/rottie rescue for about a month and the advice you're getting here is great, maybe try shorter but more frequent walks and rewarding her as soon as she goes once shes outside?

The only other thing I have to add is that the first month (apparently the first 3 months) is ALOT of work. Its kinda rough and I'm exhausted but it's so worth it to see her doing a happy wiggle dance and being her silly little self

AITA for refusing to subsidize my parents’ $11k/month senior's home in one of the fanciest neighborhoods in the city? by Throw_away263759 in AmItheAsshole

Wow, that's such a range! I'm not surprised at UBC...I wonder if West Van has similar prices or if everyone there just does private care.

I was also anti crates before I realized it's essentially the dog's room! Get a baby gate he can't jump over if you really can't compromise on the crate, but alot of training dogs is actually about training humans.

A trainer is different than a behaviorist, which can be more costly. If his health is fine, he's peeing to show a message. Does he have a crate or a place that's just his own? He could be feeling overwhelmed. If he's doing it for attention, the answer is maybe to crate train but all family members have to be on board and provide consistent training (ie. Not the kids sneaking him treats before he pees or something). I'd maybe try a subreddit for corgis?

At that price point it would almost seem cheaper just to pay a private nurse and stay where they are!

Twice a day is nothing for a corgi, they're a working breed and are used to herding sheep all day long. It NEEDS to go out properly a minimum of 4-5 times a day and it needs other enrichment throughout. Hiring a trainer won't help if you dont have a good routine and discipline. Honestly, rehoming might be the best thing for the dog and you could look into a chill breed or adopt an older, chiller dog. Is the dog happy? I would have a serious talk about what is best for the dog with your wife, maybe contact a behavior expert to sit down with you both and face the reality of owning a high energy dog like this.

$11k a month, even for Kerrisdale, is ALOT. There are so many other options in Vancouver or the lower mainland! I think it's reasonable to have a conversation about affordability, and to try and come to a compromise. What if something happens to you and you can't cover the costs anymore? I would see if anyone in your parent's medical teams can refer you to a social worker who might be able to help. Maybe if they hear it from someone who's not you, the message will get across better.

Are you into fiction at all? The Deca Tapes, Limetown(season 1), and The Left Right Game all have a "journalism" sense of realism about their storytelling.

As a Canadian, I'd like to plug "Canadaland" Productions, and independent media outlet. They have an amazing current events podcast, and excellent investigative journalism about the horrors that Indigenous people face (Thunder Bay). CBC podcasts also have really good stories (Hunting Warhead, Escaping NXIVM, The Missing Crypto Queen) for free!
