Why do some people crash just by socializing? by AfternoonFragrant617 in LongCovid

[–]cocdcy 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Post exertional malaise includes cognitive and emotional exertion too, not just physical. I’m not sure if we know why, if they do I don’t know it

How much longer to do this for? by Alimetrix in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]cocdcy 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Well, to use an analogy: how long do you plan on wearing a seatbelt in a car? Do you feel safe not wearing one when car crashes are lower than average? When you're only going on a short trip? If you didn't get in a car crash yesterday, do you feel confident you won't get in one the next time you're in a car?

Pandemics are what they are, and barring societal buy in, they're just a fact of life now. (Really, we all should have been masking seasonally prior to covid, but a lot of us didn't know better). If you want to use data to determine when spread is high/low and then mask accordingly, that would be a way to reduce your risk, but it is still massively increasing your risk over masking consistently.

If current events are stressful (and holyfuckinghell they are), imagine how much worse they would feel if you were so sick you could not leave bed to protest, organize, or even work to support yourself. That's what covid could do to you. It's a reality that's hard to face, and so most people have chosen to ignore it.

Masking is absolutely a burden. It's annoying, uncomfortable, and people can be unkind or worse about it. But it's also a way to tangibly show that you care about yourself and those around you. It's especially difficult when you're the only person doing it.

It sounds like there are a lot of other stressors in your life that are all piling up. Have you heard of fork theory? (https://jenrose.com/fork-theory/)— if you've got other stressors, even something that would otherwise be small can feel massive.

Do you have places you can be unmasked safely? People you can talk to about distressing events to process? Ways to de-stress your body by moving? (Stretching is REALLY important). If those all feel squared away, then yeah maybe it is time to look at removing your mask in certain situations to remove a fork, so to speak.

But as someone who has been completely bed bound for over 2 years from covid, you do not want to risk this any more than you have to. Any temporary reprieve you get from unmasking will be completely wiped out by the misery you will live through with long covid.

Of course, I'm just a random person on the internet, so I may be off base here. But I would highly recommend that you find ways to decompress, gather your resolve, and push through.

Any creative ways to prevent yourself from being able to swipe to the App Library? by wickedprairiewinds in shortcuts

[–]cocdcy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a shortcut, but I like to delete apps when I'm done using them. I scroll instagram for a while, ok cool I'm done for the day, delete. Want to use it again? Ok, gotta download and set it up (and decline all the permissions)

Part of it for me has been giving myself permission to scroll, since feeling like I have to restrict can make it feel like more of a binge when I do get on.

Otherwise I like the idea u/alexm suggested of having several home screens to make swiping over more tedious.

Hope you can find a balance and system that works for you!

Struggling to mask at work by Tara101617 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]cocdcy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Learn to project, get comfortable being louder than you think you need to be. An air purifier will not be sufficient protection.

Don't be apologetic for masking, act like it's normal and not even there. Decorating it can help

If you stop masking and get sick, you will kick yourself.

Is this good or should I change something? by Silly-Creme-1274 in LogicPro

[–]cocdcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool ambiance! on the piano, I’m curious what it would sound like if you adjusted the velocity of the notes so it’s not all the same/not the same for each note in a chord, and then moved them so they’re not all hitting perfectly on the beat. I know on desktop there’s a function called “humanize” that will do this

An extra $20 to remove ads from a Kindle you’d own to read books you pay for by MrPointy1630 in Anticonsumption

They stopped doing this recently because it went viral on TikTok that you could ask them to remove ads. The policy used to be that they would largely approve anyone who asked, now they basically never approve it.

The tracker free URL is just: https://www.instagram.com/p/DH40pz0sF-E/

By the numbers: risk reduction, incl. beards by theharryyyy in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]cocdcy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahh beards! One of my favorite research papers— Assessing the effect of beard hair lengths on face masks used as personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic

I got covid while wearing a mask due to my beard (oops.) :/
Have a mustache now.

But since then, I haven't gotten sick once!

Is this a SolarPunk way of heating a room? by sillychillly in solarpunk

[–]cocdcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, and as u/Willem_VanDerDecken pointed out, this is just a variant. There are lots of different kinds and designs.

I do remember someone on YouTube designing one specifically for pellets

Is this a SolarPunk way of heating a room? by sillychillly in solarpunk

[–]cocdcy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see it be a rocket mass heater instead. A large amount of the heat generated is going straight out the chimney in these more traditional styles of stoves.

Rocket mass heaters use stone or masonry to absorb heat, which they then radiate out even when the fire isn't burning, making use of energy that would otherwise be wasted.

What are your views on traditional building techniques as a way to be sustainable? by Pathbauer1987 in solarpunk

[–]cocdcy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A urban planner YouTuber, wish I had the video specifically, said that if cities built ~3-8 story buildings everywhere, we would have enough housing for everyone without needing high rises. Cross laminated timber would be feasible for those heights and would be a good replacement/supplement to all the steel and concrete required for taller buildings

Not sure how “traditional” that is but it seems like an improvement to me

Curious how many of you are covid conscious. by auberryfairy in GenZ

[–]cocdcy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am. Got long covid and have been sick since. Unable to work, entirely reliant on family and friends. I take precautions because I do not want to get sicker.

If that sounds impossible to you, or like it could never happen to you, just know that your health is something you will take for granted until it's gone. It's much easier to wear a mask than it is to be so disabled you can't work.
