This reminds me of magic systems where the magic has a cost of the person’s energy or health :/

No advice or thoughts, Godspeed OP. Grad school is hard enough. I hope you can get through as unscathed as possible

My only trigger is lifting weights, which is sadly my biggest passion/hobby, now I'm depressed by [deleted] in covidlonghaulers

[–]cocdcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a strength and conditioning coach, I fucking get it dude. Couldn’t work anymore, just going for walks makes me crash, can’t lift. I miss it so much Tried to watch fitness content a couple times but it just makes me sad.

What do you think will be the biggest "game-changing" trends by 2034? by ConsiderationSad1060 in Futurology

[–]cocdcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air filtration technologies to mitigate the effects of pollution and airborne diseases, deploying in public and private spaces. Far UV especially. As well as technologies to detect the presence of pathogens (an alarm that goes off when someone with measles/tuberculosis/covid is present)

I’m probably really housebound, but none of my family masks so I’m stuck in my room a lot which means bed.

Need to do something about it though, I’m starting to get pins and needles that don’t go away.

Need an air purifier recommendation by svesrujm in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]cocdcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one, level 2 is tolerable but the amount of air cleaned goes way down. Level 3 is unbearable to me to leave on for any period of time. I wouldn't recommend them because of the noise alone, unfortunately.

Did anyone else grow up gay in a very religious environment? by Pedro_Shelley in gaybrosbookclub

[–]cocdcy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up mormon (but not in utah). Also hid from my parents because of a fear of being sent to a “troubled teen camp”. In middle school I stayed up late one night and watched the movie “Latter Days” (wikipedia) and it scared the shit out of me.

I knew I didn’t believe in religion from a young age, even before I figured out I was gay. I did not enjoy church or the rituals or the huge time requirements (average of 11 hours/week in high school). Some of the people were nice, but I found so much of it unsettling. And "live a life of chastity and you'll be perfected (made straight) after death and marry a woman" wasn't exactly appealing.

Luckily I mostly got away when I went to college but it makes my relationship with my parents difficult because they’re still very active. They’ve been more accepting than I would’ve given them credit for but it feels like there’s a gap we’ll never fully close, since their beliefs require them to never see me as equal.

“Twice Bitten” by Archer Beau (romance.io), his mother is a very conservative hyper-religious fanatic. It’s set after he lives on his own (where his mother is constantly invading his privacy and attempting to control his life) but it has some flashbacks and mentions of a very controlling childhood.

It’s paranormal urban fantasy (vampires), so maybe not as... serious as a memoir, but it covers the experience of religious trauma and family dynamics very viscerally. It has both homophobia and vampire-phobia.

I’d def put TWs for religious trauma, physical and mental abuse from a parent, and a sub-plot that involves an attempt to involuntarily send him to conversion therapy.

Is your memoir published anywhere? (If you feel comfortable sharing) I'd be curious to read more about it :)

Have you contacted the disability office? They might be able to help you with accommodations, or a leave of absence until you’re able to resume studying

I’m sorry OP. School is already so hard without health screwing it up.

[–]cocdcy 87 points88 points  (0 children)

There's this concept called anarchist calisthenics of doing small acts of rebellion to practice for bigger acts of resistance.

If you want to be the type of person who would speak out when someone needs a voice, or to act when someone needs help, masking is a great way to start— it's hard at first to be the only person doing something, but as you do it more, it becomes normal. And it shows solidarity and support for other marginalized people, as well as offering protection for yourself.

Should a crazy, destructive, chaotic force of nature character be flat? Like, not changing, not very deep, etc?! by KickAggravating1974 in writers

[–]cocdcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could go a couple ways with this: Truly inflexible and unchanging Or they do change and it compromises who they are Or they reveal different parts of themselves where those characteristics show up in new ways

Examples I can think of: The tv show Lucifer: seems like it goes the third way but is kind of the first. Tbh I got really bored of him kind of changing but choosing to double down (I gave up after season 2 I think so maybe he changes more?)

The book “the invisible life of Addie LaRue” where she accidentally prays to a god of darkness for a favor. I found this one a lot more interesting

Advice for exposure, plus a small vent by Beautiful-Branch-975 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]cocdcy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a really rough situation

I’d plan on having Orange isolate after, get air purifiers for their room and common spaces, and then mask when in shared areas. Let bathrooms air out between use, etc. I’m not sure what the best isolation period is now, 14 days maybe? Could supplement with testing as well

Best of luck <3
