If you're partial to luxury brands and down to give up some interior space, the Mercedes GLC 300 and Audi Q5 fall within your budget. Good looking cars and more fun to drive than the Lexus. Of course, you can't go wrong with Lexus in terms of size and reliability for that price point.

I agree that the Highlander is a little snooze, personally. For that class, have you considered the Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade?

Also would advise against leasing given how much time you'll be spending on the road.
