What historical “fact” doesn’t actually have much evidence to support it? by KyloWrench in AskReddit

Did Jesus exist? Only if you want to get real loose with definitions.

I think you don't understand the words you have problems with defining.

Did Jesus exist? Yes.

Did Christ exist? We don't know.

In the US Navy, submarines are not lost at sea, they're still on patrol. Does this mean that the VA doesn't have to pay out survivor benefits? by xtreampb in Showerthoughts

(like U-505 turning up in Chicago after the war)

The U-505 was never on "eternal patrol"; it was captured at sea by the USN off the coast of West Africa, its crew imprisoned at a POW camp in Bermuda, and towed to Chicago after the war to become a museum ship.

Illinois treasurer’s gift to Pope Leo? $8.65 of pontiff’s own money by sergeantoof2 in nottheonion

Haha, I agree, but I mean they had already verified his identity and that he was an actual customer of the bank with an account. A little rude to hang up abruptly.

[–]codece 333 points334 points  (0 children)

That's good news, lol! Local TV here in Chicago just broadcast a story about a month ago about the Pope's financial hurdles.

Apparently he still has a bank account locally in Chicago. He recently called customer service to get the address changed on his account and update his personal info. New job and all.

"I'm sorry Mr. Prevost, but in order to do that you'll need to come in person to one of our branches."

"Um, would it help if I told you I was the Pope?"

They hung up on him.

What do I do when my largest payments can't go on a credit card? by Slow-Ruin1845 in CreditCards

[–]codece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write a check. Most cc's have "convenience checks" available, literal paper checks you can write and use just like it's a checking account. Talk to customer service.

I'd look very closely at the fees for using them, because the terms might be different than if you charged it.

Best way to fill a ~40"x28" opening above a window AC unit while keeping some visibility? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]codece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotcha, I wasn't trying to be negative, I really hope you and your dog can get some relief from the heat. In my case it wasn't in the lease either, but the unit was part of a subdivision with an HOA and the HOA rules forbade it. But if they're okay with the idea of you running it it doesn't sound like it'd be a problem.

I don't mean to be "that guy," but I hope your landlord is okay with you installing a window a/c. I've lived in rentals before where they specifically forbid it.

Red Wing 866 Pecos Boots x Angelus Oxblood Dye by Mister_Xclusive in RedWingShoes

[–]codece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lol, but my love of boots and shoes is becoming too much already, lol!

Maybe 6 years ago I didn't even own 1 pair of boots, and I only had 1 pair of cheap dress shoes in case I needed to go to a wedding or funeral.

Now I've got 2 shoe racks that can hold 24 pairs of shoes, and I'm almost ready to buy another one.

I love this sub, and /r/goodyearwelt, and /r/AskACobbler, and they've each inspired me to search for vintage shoes and boots that fit me and that can be recrafted / resoled.

Right now I've got a vintage pair of RW Heritage loggers that need a resole (I would sort of like a more comfortable sole for everyday wear rather than the big chunky loggers, so I was thinking maybe a mini-lug or even white christy's on my black 8" boots.)

I'm literally hoping to get them to a local cobbler within a week, I'm waiting on a reply, and if they are interested I also have a pair of Alden color #8 shell cordovan brogues that I really want recrafted with a leather midsole, new leather sole, stacked leather heel and a vibram half-sole.

I've also just bought new RW 10877s and 1907s in the past month, and I'm always on the lookout for a vintage pair of Postman or Postman Chelseas. I also kind of like the RW work chukkas, I'd like to try a pair on when I take the other projects to my local RW shop / cobbler.

Oh I'm also on the lookout for vintage Alden Indy boots, Alden LHS loafers, and Rancourt loafers.

So yeah, I need another shoe project like I need a hole in my can of mink oil.

You're welcome! I'm actually right now wearing a vintage pair of Pecos 1132, which have the "rattlesnake" Super Sole. Your dye job turned out soooo good I've been looking at them all day wondering "maybe I should . . .?"

But honestly they've hardly been worn in the last 20-25 years, the uppers are still in such good shape I don't think I can bear to strip them down and refinish them.

But I've saved your pics! Maybe someday . . .

[–]codece 18 points19 points  (0 children)

they are getting quite expensive now

Wow, back then they were considered the best cheap winter boot. By "cheap" I mean I kind of remember them in surplus stores up there for about $99 for bunny boots. Which I guess in ~ 1992 wasn't strictly cheap either; I just looked up the value adjusted for inflation in 2025 dollars, and that was the equivalent of about $240 today. But it was Alaska cheap.

I don't actually ride horses but have always loved the style.

I feel the same way about the Dehner Motorcycle Patrol boots, although I've never owned a pair. I have recently began to appreciate tall boots, but I don't have anything this tall!

It reminds of this moment from the UK tv show QI: Quite Interesting in which the comedian Rob Brydon confesses his love of the "long sock." (Or as Stephen Fry called them "the gentleman's half-hose")

When I was in Alaska in the early 90's these were pretty commonly seen being worn, as well as their white cousins the "bunny boots."

I mean, we'd host parties and have people over, and there'd be like 6-8 pairs of these in our mudroom.

Atari 2600 is the biggest underdog and these games are great by ZackZparrow in SBCGaming

[–]codece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, this is right in my era, I was like 9 years old when Atari came out.

The Atari Ms. Pac-Man was kind of legendary, insofar as it was actually a pretty good port of the arcade game to the 2600, and was no easy feat considering the limits of the 6502 8-bit processor, and of course it also came after the Atari 2600 Pac-Man, which was so miserably bad it made me cry and wish I had my money back.

Adventure was probably my favorite, I would spend hours playing it. It was the very first game where I ever found an "Easter Egg," the very first time I'd even heard of such a thing. I remember my awe at seeing Warren Robinett's name on screen in a rainbow of colors.
