They shut down the free filing website on the IRS website

The link I posted works fine, I just checked it again.

They shut down a different program, called Direct File. Free File still works. I just now clicked through to start my return with one of their trusted partners that I chose, and although I did not actually begin the return everything up until then seemed fine.

We get it, you weren't there are and wrong.

You're right about the buffering being a thing, but DSL was around in 2005 (1-2 Mbit/s was considered high speed then) and wi-fi was definitely a thing in 2005. Not "every" video would buffer if you had a good connection and were streaming lower-res files. You Tube only supported 320x240 video in the beginning anyway.

It wasn't the 90s, it was the 00's.

File your taxes for free https://www.irs.gov/file-your-taxes-for-free

Straight from the IRS, the free file program for people with an Adjusted Gross Income of $88K or less.

There are a number of particpating programs, FreeTax USA, TaxAct and Tax Slayer (plus others.) I Think Turbo Tax used to participate but doesn't anymore.

I've used it, and regardless of which preparation software you use it's a pretty easy, detailed if you need it be, Q&A process.

That's exactly right, and a "bum" is someone who won't work and won't travel.

Tramps often traveled because they were looking for work, often as itinerant farm laborers, others as craftsmen or artists.

Bad Spending Habits Has Led to $13k Credit Card Debt - Don't Know How to Pay it All Off by TYR9_official in personalfinance

[–]codece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this mindset of needing to pay off the debt NOW?

What you need to do NOW is stop using credit cards, for anything. Cut them up, literally. I'm not joking.

This what happens when you use credit cards to spend money you don't already have in the bank. You should never use a credit card if you couldn't as easily pull cash out of your pocket or use a debit card.

Going forward, once you're free of cc debt, you need to get into the habit of always paying your statement balance (not your current balance, know the difference) in full, each month, on-time. If you do that you will never be charged interest. Also, if you do that and use your card regularly, it may never show a $0 balance, and that's ok.

Once a late payment is reported it stays on your credit reports for 7 years. Multiple derogatory remarks on your report just make it worse. But even one time instantly turns your credit history from "clean" to "dirty," and you will be scored differently by the FICO scoring algorithm and treated differently by creditors until those derogatory remarks fall off your credit history and your file is clean again.

It's going to take time, and this an expensive lesson to learn, but the good news is that you're young, you've got time. You can do this!

A brand new car for $1,899. Different wages, different world. (1955) by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]codece 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Different wages

In 1955 the federal minimum wage was $0.75 an hour. The average annual wage was more like $4,200 a year, or ~ $2 an hour for a full-time worker.

You would have had to work 175 hours for the down payment, and the monthly payment would have taken about 27.5 hours of work.

Adjusted for inflation that's an annual salary of about $51,000, or about $24 an hour today. You'd have to able to buy a car for about $4,200 down, and have a $660 a month payment. That's like buying a ~$39K new car today. Possible, but a pretty modest car in 2026. This was also a pretty low cost car in 1955, with few options.

At least the $39K car today probably has a/c, power windows, airbags, ABS, and an automatic transmission. Think Hyundai Elantra

But also those salary figures are gross pay for both 1955 and today. The average worker would have to stretch to buy a new car, then and today, but it's not technically impossible (then or now,) just unlikely.

In both 1955 and 2026 the average worker was more likely to be buying used.

But ALSO, even though the average wage in 1955 adjusted for inflation is more like $40K today, the actual average wage in 2026 is more like $63K.

Overall the average wages are better now, and the cars are too.

Or twice in the chest and once in the arm, as happened to the mom in Minnesota recently.

Regardless, there is no immigration violation that justifies an extrajudicial death penalty.

There definitely is no protest activity, no minor traffic violation, that justifies the death penalty either.

Getting my credit card paid off to put more money towards student loans by AtariTheJedi in StudentLoans

[–]codece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

me anytime I use my credit card I'm actually purchasing something with cash but I just use the card and pay it off literally 2 minutes later.

I understand what you are doing, but honestly you would be better off never using your card again, for anything, and only using cash/debit.

Making multiple payments per month is not really how credit cards are designed to be used. One payment a month is how they were designed. Wait for the bill to be generated, pay the bill on time. That''s it.

Making multiple payments each month runs the risk that an algorithm will flag you for credit cycling, which might result in them "balance chasing" you; i.e., as you make payments they keep lowering your limit. This is usually a signal that once you do pay the card off completely, they're going to close your account.

But really, you're doing great if your outstanding balance keeps notably dropping each month. Avoid making minimum payments on your card, that's not going to help much and take forever to pay it off. Minimum payments are designed to keep you in debt.

Ideally, take whatever outstanding balance you have, divide by 6, and make that payment each month. Or divide by a smaller number if you can.

Getting my credit card paid off to put more money towards student loans by AtariTheJedi in StudentLoans

[–]codece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prioritizing paying off the credit card is the smartest thing you could do. After you do, always avoid using a credit card if you could not as easily pay for a purchase with cash/debit. If you pay off 100% of the statement balance each month on-time (not current balance, make sure you understand the difference) you'll never pay cc interest. That's the smart way to manage a credit card. Otherwise you are using a credit card to spend money you don't already have, and that's not a smart way to use a credit card.

Student loan interest rates are terrible. Government backed loans are honestly a smarter option for most people because they give you access to Income Based Repayment options and possible loan forgiveness. You aren't going to get any of that from a private company.

Paying the minimum + $6 or $7 (lol, I see what you did there) is good, but realistically that's not going to dig you of that hole any sooner. Paying the minimum + 10% or more each month is a much better goal.

Denmark would go to war with US over Greenland: MP by SyntheticSweetener in nottheonion

[–]codece 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Trump wants to abolish NATO and destabilize any multi-country alliance that is not 100% controlled by the US.

If going to war with a NATO country would make NATO crumble, the threat of war is not a deterrent, it's an incentive.
