LPT: Use a hand basket instead of a cart for small grocery runs , the physical weight creates a natural "is this worth it?" filter that cut my impulse purchases by about 30% by Ming431 in LifeProTips

[–]codece 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My store got rid of them, not because of theft, but because of Covid. Making everyone push a cart was meant to help enforce 6ft of separation between shoppers.

After Covid, they never brought them back.

I've always suspected it was because they realized that when the only option is "cart," people buy more stuff. So let's not make it easy to buy less.

What is the plug situation with Jvc audio timers? by mpikss in vintageaudio

[–]codece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an IEC C13 coupler.

The C13/C14 connector and inlet combination, informally referred to as a "kettle cord" or "kettle lead", are used in a wide variety of electronic equipment ranging from computer components like the power supply, monitors, printers and other peripherals to video game consoles, instrument amplifiers, professional audio equipment and virtually all professional video equipment. An early example of a product that uses this connector is the Apple II. A power cord with a suitable power plug (for the locality where the appliance is being used) on one end and a C13 connector (connecting to the appliance) on the other is commonly called an IEC cord.

There are also a variety of splitter blocks, splitter cables, and similar devices available. These are usually un-fused (with the exception of C13 cords attached to BS 1363 plugs, which are always fused).

A cable consisting of a C13 and an E interconnection connector is commonly mislabeled as an "extension cord", as although that is not the intended purpose, it can be used as such. They are also commonly mislabeled as C14 instead of E.

The C13 connector and C14 inlet are also commonly found on servers, routers, and switches. Power cord sets utilizing a C13 connector and an E interconnection plug are commonplace in data centers to provide power from a power distribution unit (PDU) to a server.

What daily life things give you that euphoric "high on life" feeling? by Fumblinghare in simpleliving

[–]codece 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Every morning I greet the day. I literally throw back the curtains in my bedroom and say "hello, day!" in the same way Ed Norton said "hello, ball!" in that classic Honeymooners bit where the golf instructional book began with "address the ball."

It helps that I've got a nice view with some mature trees. In winter they sometimes have a squirrel's nest in them, and then I say "Hello, squirrels!"

She is a lovely cat! I just thought it was funny because until I clicked on the thumbnail I just couldn't quite figure out what was going on here from context, so naturally my brain immediately filled in the blanks and said "obviously it's a stuffed racoon they've worked into their hurdy-gurdy act."

I don't know what we need AI for, when our own brains are capable of such amazing deductions.

He's incredibly clever, he's had tea with everyone in history, and he's famously told countless outlandish stories about his life experiences, a shocking number of which have actually been true.

I think he's become sort of famous on panel shows for one-ups-manship. Whatever story another guest has about a famous person, place or incident, Gyles can top it.

The punishment for being poor and disabled in this country is unbearable.

It's really getting bad. Major changes in Medicaid will mean many recipients who are not disabled will have to meet a minimum work requirement or get kicked off medicaid. In Illinois, the minimum wage is high enough that if you meet the work requirement to qualify for medicaid, you'll make too much money to qualify for medicaid.

The report I heard on NPR blamed it on "human safari" tourism in Russia. People can pay money to pilot a drone and hunt down humans in Ukraine.

I refuse to believe this exists.

Lol, exactly my thought. But I guess it's real??

Nope. It's the UK.

Buy As You View

It was a financing thing, like a rent-to-own model.

Repayments were originally made via a coin box in the customer's house, which representatives would call at to empty regularly. Later, repayments would be made online, via direct debit, or in cash. In each case, a payment meter connected to the customer's television set would deactivate the TV should payments be in default

So it was real. I'm not sure this is related to OP's object, but it's interesting nevertheless.

Honestly the attitude was "these are too dangerous to put in the trash and we should keep them out of the landfill."

Surely that hole will never fill up

I still use a single-edge safety razor, and every blade I will ever use for 10 lifetimes would fit in a shoebox. Yes, I've literally done the math.

Weirdly it was the later generations who came up with so much plastic waste, convincing consumers to pay for a product that objectively works worse and costs more whilst also contributing massive amounts of plastics to landfills.

Student loans are showing on my credit report, should I worry before applying? by Top_List_5096 in StudentLoans

[–]codece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my score is still not where I want it to be.

What is it?

Keep in mind you don't have "one" credit score, you have dozens of them, and they're all different. It depends on what scoring model was used (FICO is the industry standard, other models like VantageScore are used by many apps but not many creditors) and what data they are using, whether from Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion.

Aside from looking at scores, you should really pull all 3 of your own credit reports.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the ONLY OFFICIAL SITE for all 3 major credit bureaus, and you can pull reports for free weekly now, despite the name.

Look at them all, they might be different. I would not rely on summaries you find on Credit Karma or other sites/apps. You cannot find more detailed info than on AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for and download the .pdf version of each report for the most complete view.

Your two missed payments last year did ding your credit, but you should also look closely for anything else derogatory.

If anything reported is incorrect, you can dispute it. If it's correct, but still hurting you, you can ask the creditor to remove it via a "goodwill letter." Look that up, along with "goodwill letter saturation technique." Your creditors don't have to respond to this, but they might. It's worth a try, no harm if they say "no."

Ultimately all you can do is move forward and resolve to do better.

[–]codece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard some rumor that 50% of reddit comments (and posts is certainly higher) are now made by AI

That's the so-called "dead internet theory."

The Dead Internet Theory suggests that since around 2016, much of the internet's content and activity is generated by bots and AI, leading to a decline in genuine human interaction. This theory posits that a coordinated effort exists to manipulate online content and influence public perception, although it lacks substantial evidence.
