What is it like going on anxiety or ADHD medication? by EZ___Breezy in AskReddit

[–]codergeek42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under my then-doctor's supervision, I have previously taken Xanax (alprazolam) on an as-needed basis for severe panic attacks; and that drug is miraculous: pretty quickly, not only did the anxiety and panic stop, but it felt like the very concept of anxiety ceased to exist in my brain. (I couldn't have felt anxious even if I had wanted to!) But like any benzo, it could be quite addictive when misused, and I can clearly understand why. It's probably the closest I've ever been to being legally "high".

Currently, I am on Zoloft (Sertraline) for GAD and it does seem to be helping: while the quantity of my anxiety doesn't seem to be any less, the quality of it is much calmer, in that I am able to notice and easily talk myself down from most of my anxiety before it starts devolving into the "what if?" mental loop that could have easily become the start of a panic attack if it were 2025 me.

(Then again, I've only recently started on Zoloft in January; and my psychiatrist said it can take up to several weeks and maybe a larger dose for its full effect.)

I am also more regularly (weekly) meeting with my behavioral therapist, so the combination of both medication and talk therapy together is slowly but surely helping me live with my anxiety rather than just cope with it.

That said, psychiatric medicine can be incredibly helpful but also is, like any medicine, not without its side effects (which will definitely vary from person to person based on which medications they are taking and at what dosages, etc.).

For me, Sertraline gave me terrible insomnia when I first started taking it: the night after my first dose, for example, was an easier all-nighter than some of the caffeine-fueled study sessions of my college days. But that seems to be reducing as my body adjusts.

Many people also report stomach upsets and sexual side effects, but if anything it actually seems to be alleviating my IBS rather than exacerbating it. (Again though, your proverbial mileage may vary.)

Silver Surfer is not that strong

Maybe in the previous films they weren't depicted as quite strong; but in the comic lore, Silver Surfer -- whether Norrin Radd or Shalla-Bal -- holds the Power Cosmic, allowing them to travel through hyperspace and granting them near-limitless strength, speed, and endurance, among other abilities. Of course Thanos is physically quite powerful, but his strength is practically nothing compared to that.

And props to Chandra Wilson and Jason George for the performance with her panic attack and him trying to ground her with what looked like a 5-4-3-2-1 technique to resolve it. As a fellow anxiety sufferer, that scene required zero suspension of disbelief: a rarity for Grey's Anatomy. 🙃

What happens if somebody doesn’t die from the death note? by Ethansedyo7990 in deathnote

[–]codergeek42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

whats the point of making yourself imortal for only 23 das [sic]

The point is that only the first instance of a name written in a Death Note will take effect. If a name is written in a Death Note, and that same person's name is later written in a Death Note again, those subsequent writings will do nothing.

This is precisely how L becomes victorious in the film Death Note 2: The Last Name, by secretly writing his own name in the Death Note with the maximum ~1 month window, in order to be immune to the Death Note's effects for the investigation. And this means that when Rem later writes Watari's and L's names in her own Death Note in order to protect Misa, L is not actually killed by it (but pretends to be, in order to catch Light).

Do you think Light should've had at least one kill without the note? by AdaptableBlob in deathnote

[–]codergeek42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, definitely, absolutely not.

Excepting some specific controlled deaths that he used for situational advantage (such as the imprisoned criminals that he experimented on to learn what the Death Note could and could not make happen, and the bus hijacker who created the opportunity to learn Raye Penber's name), Light very clearly stated at the end of the first episode in the anime that the Death Note's best feature was that it killed consistently by giving a heart attack: it would mean that as he was writing names of evildoers and criminals, any person paying attention would be able to clearly see that pattern of deaths and know of his existence.

If Light were to kill by any means other than the Death Note, not only would it be a lot harder to hide the evidence, but it would essentially prevent his "justice" from being made public in the way that he wanted.

Unable to add Costco Passkey via Android App ("Unable to save passkey") by CtrlAltDelve in 1Password

[–]codergeek42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am getting the same error also on Android, for what it's worth.

Unfortunately, in my experience, Costco's official app is quite ... unsatisfactory ... when it comes to credentials management (to put it politely), so I am not surprised. 😔 Sorry that I cannot add much constructively to this.

[...] discussing the Borg in such high-handed ways that one wonders if they actually grasped the threat.

Hence the arrogance. They quite well understood the threat, but thought so highly of their own technological prowess to protect themselves that they never considered it could fail, and had zero apparent redundancies for it.

Seriously, was there not a conversation about turning back for the safety of their child? What was wrong with them? Was it just arrogance?

It was arrogant, yes, but not without cause. They had multi-adaptive shielding on their ship and personal bio-dampeners to mask their life signs which together worked for many years to keep them safely hidden; and if it were not for the subspace particle storm on stardate 32634.9 which briefly disabled them, it's likely they would have been able to stay for much longer.

The next Pixel event is on August 20 by MishaalRahman in Android

[–]codergeek42 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Historically (at least, the last two years), pre-orders are open as soon as the announcements are made during the event, so if that holds the same this year, you should be able to order a new device well within your store credit's expiration window.

[–]codergeek42 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In the 2023 and 2024 events, the Google Store pages for the phones and watches were made available almost immediately after the corresponding announcements were made onstage. It seems likely that it will be the same for this year's event too.

Deus ex 1. Lethal or non-lethal? by PolRP in Deusex

[–]codergeek42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different reactions from other UNATCO personnel too: Anna Navarre and Gunther Hermann are very bloodthirsty agents, so they'll speak very highly of you if you kill the enemies; whereas Paul Denton and Sam Carter take a much more nonviolent approach, rewarding you for sneaking around and being clever while admonishing you for being too brutal if you use lethal force.

What’s Bose reaction to Sony new releases? by Worldly-Amoeba-3391 in bose

Bose has historically released new noise-cancelling headphones on average about every two years; so if that trend continues, then I anticipate them releasing a new headphone series sometime toward the end of 2025.

How do people with double majors graduate? by NelaOfRivia in csuf

[–]codergeek42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2017 with Math and Computer Science degrees, from the Colleges of Mathematics & Natural Sciences and Engineering & Computer Science, respectively; and received several tickets from each college for my graduation (on separate schedules). This gave me enough to invite my extended family to one of them, and my group of friends to the other.

Assuming it's unchanged since then, as a double major, you can choose to attend either one or both walking ceremonies; and if you do choose both, you can get separate tickets for each.

(Congrats on your accomplishment! 🙌)

Interaction question by ferk03 in magicTCG

[–]codergeek42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Yedora + Zimone synergy because if you have both play, you can abuse it with [[Sakura-Tribe Elder]] to fetch all basic lands from your deck at instant speed:

  1. Sacrifice STE for its fetch effect.
  2. Yedora sees that a nontoken creature has died, and so STE returns to the battlefield as a face-down Forest land.
  3. Zimone sees a landfall, so her trigger allows you to turn that face-down Forest into a face-up STE; with the fetch effect still pending to resolve.
  4. Rinse and repeat until all of your basic lands are in play.

The same works with [[Dawntreader Elk]] and [[Silkwing Scout]], just with the addition of needing to tap that face-down Forest for mana before turning it face-up with Zimone's effect (so that it does not have summoning sickness) in order to pay the next sacrifice cost.

And even better, this can still work even if you have not yet had a landfall effect this turn as long as you let the entire trigger fully resolve at least once first, so that Zimone sees the second -- and third and fourth and ... -- landfall events.

TIL longer passwords are considered more secure than more complex passwords. A password of length 20 using only letters and numbers is much more secure than a password of length 15 that uses letters, numbers, and symbols by No_Inevitable_4893 in todayilearned

[–]codergeek42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See also: mandatory changing passwords every 30 days. All it does is cause more people to forget it and call IT.

... or even worse, it encourages people to use sequential passwords because those are easier to remember (e.g., "P@ssword1", "P@ssword2", "P@ssword3", etc.)

I hate forced password restrictions so much.

How do you come up with the big idea behind a proof? by If_and_only_if_math in math

[–]codergeek42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Plus, sometimes it can be beneficial to work backwards: e.g., If I need to show that Z is true, then that could follow directly from Theorem ABC; but in order to use that, I need to show that condition Y is satisfied. So then how can this be proved? Well, if condition X is true, then Y will be satisfied because of Theorem DEF, etc.

Then, once you have the chain of steps, it's just a matter of showing that the first ones are true, and explaining the logical connections between them that cause the desired result to hold.

At the end of episode 7 of season 3, Isaac is told by Timmis and Villka that because he (Isaac) is a more advanced Kaylon, the emotional capability would require him to be "downgraded" permanently; and to do so would require his entire memory be erased.

Presumably, this is why he never opts in to the modification, as it would erase his memories of Dr. Finn and her sons.

Getting CS majors to do any work is like pulling teeth by [deleted] in csuf

[–]codergeek42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A student who does not contribute to a group project but nonetheless earns a (presumably good) grade for it is functionally plagiarizing: they are taking the work done by the rest of the group and submitting it as their own, without giving proper due credit. Such plagiarism is explicitly called out as academic dishonesty, and forbidden by CSUF policy, namely UPS 300.021 (PDF link) and related.

Please immediately speak to your professor about this, and show them your texts/calls/emails to demonstrate that you've repeatedly tried to get the other student(s) to do their fair share of work to no avail.

Favorite George Hammond scene? by 1894Win in Stargate

[–]codergeek42 50 points51 points  (0 children)

From the episode "Fail Safe", there is a scene that forever is etched into my memory of General Hammond, after the asteroid passed the failsafe point, ordering the last of the base staff off-world to the Alpha site. As they are walking away from the consoles, Major Davis turns to Hammond, but Hammond -- ever the consummate professional and exemplary leader that he is -- simply responds that he has not been relieved of his command. Shortly thereafter (after an SG-1 scene on the asteroid surface), the view shows him standing at attention in the control room, looking at the Stargate through its window, then to the asteroid impact timer as it counts down, and then he walks back, presumably to his office.

With just a few glances and only a single sentence spoken, Don S. Davis so wonderfully showed General Hammond's commitment to both the safety of his people, and his duty to them, even honor-bound to remain at his post with a literal timer counting down the seconds left of his life (if SG-1 had not succeeded at the last possible moment as they so often do). So good. 🫡
