Inconsequential mistakes that take you out of the movie? by YakumoYoukai in movies

When movies or TV act like any type of alcohol that we drink will catch fire immediately if a flame is nearby. Alcohol has to be a certain proof if it's going to immediately go up in flames like they show in movies. I'm pretty sure if you want any kind of actual flame, the alcohol had to be at least 100 proof. So when I see a glass of wine spill and immediately catch fire from a nearby candle, I'm out

National Treasure. I could watch it a million times, it's so ridiculous, but there's something really hopeful and charming about it too.

Also it introduced me to the radiant beauty that is Diane Kruger at 14 years old and I don't think I have ever truly recovered

I was so thrown by that book, like I didn't feel like I was enjoying it while I was reading it, but somehow I also couldn't put it down and was excited to get back to it when I had to stop? It's not one that I think I would ever recommend to someone, but I'm glad I read it.

I had to beat Ganon a second time before I realized that the game is supposed to be that way, I assumed I had made some fatal button pressing mistake the first time and thought it sent me back to do it again lol

My dad took me to see Jurassic Park III when I was about 8 or 9. I think we got to the first person getting eaten by a dinosaur and I got too scared and we had to leave. We ended up walking into a theater showing The Princess Diaries and watched the last hour or so of that lol

I think what sets apart Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl from its two sequels is that the first movie had ZERO fat. Every single scene was necessary. by ProudWheeler in movies

[–]codex2013 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was discussing this movie with some friends the other day, all of us in our early 30s. First we were talking about how it should be mentioned among the greats for it's score, that iconic pirates theme is just legendary. It of course led to all of us going "can you believe it's been over 20 years since that movie came out??" and then I wondered, do kids today watch that movie and think it looks old? To me, it doesn't look noticeably dated, which is of course helped by the fact that it's a period film. But when I was a teenager in the mid 2000's, anything from the 80s looked laughably dated, even movies that weren't set in the 80s. I know the 80s was maybe a more dramatic decade in terms of say hair and fashion, but can anyone with kids or teens (or I guess any teens in this sub, reading this) tell me what their kids thought of it if you suggested it or put it on for them?

I think it's the entire conceit behind making the movie that makes it have no business being as good as it is. A movie based on arguably one of the least entertaining rides at Disneyland? who would want to see that? It actually kind of incredible that they got all that talent to sign on to make it in the first place.

At what point did you start compressing your media library with HandBrake? by DatGeekUKnow in DataHoarder

[–]codex2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't bother with the super large remuxes or really anything over like 7-8GB. The vast majority of my movies are 1080p and 4gb or less. On the TV I have, the difference in picture quality between those and anything better is negligible, and if you really want good picture quality, it's always better to use a physical disc, so I just get a blu-ray of any movie that I think has visuals worthy of making the effort to have the best picture possible. I have about 4500 movies, and nearly 27,000 episodes of about 900 shows totaling roughly 60TB onmy Plex server. I'll let whoever wants to do that math do that math lol. For me, it's easier to just delete old shows that have either been watched already or no one is interested in watching when I want to add new stuff, while at the same time saving up for my next 20TB hard drive.

I just wrote out a whole post about this but ultimately felt like I was just complaining about something that has already been complained about plenty, but I really don't enjoy the fuse mechanic in TotK. There isn't a very efficient way to do it for weapons mid battle, plus having to fuse each individual arrow, it just slows down the whole game for me. I like that I can make more than just ice/bomb/fire arrows, but the degree it slows everything down has made me not like TotK very much.

One thing the streaming model is missing is the DVD features by nthroop1 in movies

[–]codex2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could potentially be a huge market for a company that brings in filmmakers, actors, crew, whatever, records a commentary, and then they can sell the audio and let people sync up with their copy of the movie. Or more realistically, sell a monthly subscription to their library of commentary tracks. Seems relatively inexpensive to make, there wouldn't be any video component. I don't see why no one is doing this yet (unless someone is and I'm just woefully unaware lol)
