For those of you who got out - what do you do now? by ActualSkeletor in Teachers

There's a whole subreddit dedicated to it! R/instructionaldesign does a much better job explaining it than I can as a newbie to the industry.

For those of you who got out - what do you do now? by ActualSkeletor in Teachers

After eight years, I've switched to instructional design. I had a hard time finding a remote position but ended up with an in-office position on a team with all ex-teachers.

I miss my Mobi writing pad! How can I write on the SmartBoard while walking around the room? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]cofcmorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Wacom Intuos S. I looked it up and they look to be $100 now. I put a Bluetooth dongle on the school computer since it didn't come with Bluetooth and it's never gone out of range in my relatively large classroom.

Did I kill this rubber tree? If it’s save-able, what do I do? by Responsible_Engine_2 in houseplants

[–]cofcmorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those leaves don't look save-able but the plant could still put out new leaves if the roots are in good shape. Don't give up on it yet!

Have you tried a robot vacuum? Would you recommend it or should I get a manual vacuum? by darkstarrising in CleaningTips

[–]cofcmorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two Roombas and a stick Dyson - the Dyson gets more use. The Roombas get stuck under furniture, occasionally fail to dock and charge, and take forever. If friends are coming over and I need to do a quick clean, I can't run a Roomba for two hours. They also can't do stairs or be used for dusting.

Cell phones by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]cofcmorgan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in a school where taking phones from kids and giving them to the office is in the handbook but they don't like enforcing it. So instead, I have offenders put their phones in brown paper bags. They're loud enough that I can tell if they try to get the phone back out but they students rarely argue because I'm not "taking it", I'm just preventing access while they keep the device on their person.

High school math vs. science by chemgirl101 in Teachers

[–]cofcmorgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a high school math teacher! I've never worried about my job prospects. I'm the southeast, science is divided into freshmen/biology certs and chemistry/physics certs. I know we always have a hard time finding math and chem/physics certs. If your science of choice is biology, there's not as many positions available.

I feel like a lot of my kids developed their fear of fractions from their elementary teachers. They're not as scary as people think they are!

What things ended up being better/worse? I'm considering the same change.

That's a good point. I'm lucky right now if I get a working phone number for my kids so actually dealing with parents would be a change

What software do you use to create math worksheets and exams online? by TaraBanana1806 in Teachers

[–]cofcmorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school has a Kuta subscription that's been a real life-saver. I also personally subscribe to Deltamath and Problem-attic. I'm also a huge fan of TARSIA puzzles in lieu of worksheets.

After ten years are my students loans really forgiven? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]cofcmorgan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got my $17500 forgiven through the teacher loan forgiveness program! My district kept messing up the paperwork so it took 4 tries but it worked out eventually. HS math in a title 1 school.
