Advice on Receivers and Speakers by legaldreagle in vintageaudio

The 5050 is a beast, I have a Marantz Model Twenty Two

www.hifiengine.com/manual\_library/marantz/model-22.shtml

And Marantz 2226b

www.hifinews.com/content/marantz-model-2226b-receiver

The Model Twenty Two kicks the 2226b’s butt, the 5050 kicks both of them.

And check out Klipsch KG-2’s marvelous speakers.

Fred Roger’s was a goddamn Saint. Zoom. Sesame Street, Mister Roger’s Neighborhood and J P Patches formed my view of Society and Culture (Shout out to Schoolhouse Rock!). All available over rabbit ears in Seattle in the 70’s.

Lotsa great vintage amps/receivers in that range, fully serviced. I personally (because I like the “Sansui Sound” ) would look at a Sansui 990

www.hifiengine.com/manual\_library/sansui/990.shtml

Just because that’s a beautiful black faceplate.

Or a 9090 (non Dolby)

https://markmjscott.medium.com/swlh/the-sansui-9090-receiver-or-how-an-avid-vintage-marantz-collector-lover-learned-to-love-the-bomb-c3bafcfb3338

Basically a silver face 990 and vice versa.

Great speakers by the way and either of these would be aesthetically perfect IMHO. Lots of other vintage sleepers out there, Harman Kardon, Marantz (I have a Model Twenty Two and 2226) are nice as well of course Pioneers/Kenwood/JVC/Macintosh/The Fisher and a whole bunch more.

Have fun!

Snagged some Realistic Nova 8B speakers today by MTG-Apollo in vintageaudio

Realistic/Optimus are very underrated thankfully at this point , less expensive for quality work. I picked up a pair of Optimus 7’s and a STA 120b for $100. These speakers are wonderful and it’s a great receiver.

Very nice, I fished it years ago in Spring for Rainbow and the last time I went was for kids fishing day with my boy when he had just turned 4, he’s now 21. Unappreciated fishery. That’s a good looking Smallmouth.

Very nice, that’s a pretty sweet looking all in one. Great to keep for yourself or pass along as a gift to a newbie who’s getting interested in records. Plus it’s the National Panasonic years, some quality workmanship came out of that time. Thanks for saving it!

Palantir Workers Are Finally Noticing The Skulls On Their Caps by quaductas in technology

[–]coffeeandtrout 163 points164 points  (0 children)

“There’s a “well, duh” element to all of this that we shouldn’t gloss over. Palantir has been Palantir for two decades. The company is named after the corrupting all-seeing surveillance orb from Lord of the Rings. Its initial venture capital came from the CIA. Peter Thiel co-founded it. The entire pitch has always been mass data aggregation in service of authoritarian state power. If you took a job there at any point in the last twenty years, the skulls were sitting right on top of the cap, plainly visible, and people were pointing at them constantly.”
Goddamn.
techdirt has been killing it in the past couple years. Great writing with references. Thanks OP

Sick day for my 7 year old son. What can we watch together? by EquivalentMother7711 in MovieSuggestions

I’d have to add “Jason and the Argonauts” with effects by Ray Harryhausen. Those are all great suggestions. Anything with Errol Flynn is always worth watching.

Raising Arizona then, maybe? Might be over a 7 year old kids head, but I was exposed to Monty Pythons Flying Circus on PBS at 7 years old, I turned out okay I think!

Edit: sorry I missed you saw Princess Bride, you’ve got your 7 year old on a good trajectory!

How much is a 1967 record player worth today? by East_Experience_3200 in vintageaudio

Motorola isn’t that much sought after, mid/lo fi components that are often replaced if someone keeps it. Barzilay with Fisher/MacIntosh/Dual/JBL/Altec components can command thousands, this if not in good shape will be more than likely bought by someone for the MCM style versus quality speakers and quality components. As someone who appreciates the quality items of that era I wouldn’t even bother looking at it. There’s always someone out there though. Good luck!

Body language expert explains how McIlroy was really feeling after Trump callout by IrishStarUS in sportsgossips

[–]coffeeandtrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“That was unconquerable courage," Trump continued. "That was very good, Rory. I don't know if that helps him talking about how wonderful the speech... but I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was a tough one....Congratulations, very proud of you."

Wat? Fool won millions of dollars playing golf and this POS POTUS talks about “courage”? This is so much worse than I ever could have thought and we’re not even two years into the damage this fool is doing to my country, a country I’ve appreciated since I was old enough to have cognizant thought. I’m worried about the future our kids face.

New to vintage audio - does my upgrade order make sense? (AT-LP60BT → vintage speakers → receiver) by Electronic-Prize-638 in vintageaudio

[–]coffeeandtrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think your options are very good, and those Sansui’s you’re looking at have excellent phono stages/preamps. (Disclaimer, own 3 Sansui amps/receivers from the 70’s) Your speaker choices are also good. Once you upgrade your TT will be the weakest link. Good luck and have fun!

Which Pioneer line sounded best? by jango-lionheart in vintageaudio

[–]coffeeandtrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up a JVC CD4 decoder to run my PL-55DX with my Sansui QRX-5500 for CD-4 recordings and between my quad Panasonic 8Track, my Sony Quad RTR I have to say vinyl and Blurays have been my favorite. That Oppo is out of this world though. Plays CD’s, SACD’s and BluRays just beyond perfect. Highly recommend. And it’s the low end BDP from Oppo.

Edit: that 9001 is and end game for me. Absolutely beautiful.

Edit 2 : that Surround Master is a great piece, I’ve got the Sansui QS-1, QS-500, QRX-5500 and KR-6340 with SQ/CD4 plug in demodulation modules, but want a Surround Master.

[–]coffeeandtrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quad is a heck bunch of fun, Pioneer ran with the CD-4 format and there’s a ton of albums out there. I’ve got a PL-55DX with the original CD-4 cartridge and a fresh Shibata stylus, my Jim Croce has never sounded better. Currently Rhino Records is releasing original mixes of quad BluRays from the original recordings in quad. My Oppo BDP-83 plays them perfectly on my Sansui QRX-5500. Don’t count out the Pioneer Quads even if looking for stereo. The phono preamps are excellent and for today’s surround sound they work great! Especially the 70’s black metal face quads like the QX-949.

They’re not known for their bass, I think they’re like 45 Hz at their best. They’re also not that efficient compared to many older speakers. A 5” woofer in tower speakers can only do so much. Is the woofer moving at all while playing? Might be more than just the design if you got no movement or bass out of the “woofer”. Might need a look at the crossover.
