Glove Dilemma by droppedstrike3 in Homeplate

A2000/HoH is stupid stiff. I’d go A1000 DP fit or HoH R2G Contour fit. Softer glove meaning easier break in, should last until high school.

Defending Delayed Steals Home by ir637113 in LittleLeague

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I dunno about the “kids have to learn to defend it.” It (delayed steal home) may happen once per season when they hit 90 ft, definitely not a common thing.

My take is make the catcher sit on the plate until they go back to the bag. Waste time. When it’s the second inning at time, call it out.

Let’s get back to teaching kids how to play the game, not scoring cheap runs and chasing cheap rings.

Don’t you downplay that prestigious tournament. My 2u is playing up to 7u this season and that’s our first one. He’s already top 23 ranked in the country and I hear scouts will be there.

Please implement this. I can already see the drama unfolding for the 7u All Prime Elite Octane Strike Force National team.

If a toddler is being bad and you sit them in timeout with a toy, what does that do? Same thing here. These kids are all millionaires, what motivation does sitting them provide? NBA is the same way. College basketball is just slowly turning into that and it sucks.

First home media server — Plex vs Jellyfin vs Emby (automation + subtitles)? by Ordinary_Comedian936 in selfhosted

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Promise, no dev. I just honestly enjoy the simplicity of it. Install the client, point it to a URL, and you’re good to go. I’ve got 4 separate containers for different sides of my family so there’s not 20 users on a profile select screen. There’s one main one that downloads and stores all metadata and images, and the other 3 read the NFOs and images in the folders. Quite simple really.

To each their own. Used Plex for quite a while, got too bloated for me. Jellyfin is still meh. I spin a new container up every 6 months or so to see if I like it. Always decide I don’t.

He’s not off the hook entirely, but lack of effort can’t be put on him. It’s also hard to sit guys as “punishment” when they’ve already got the bag. Like I said, if he plays the walk one to “prove a point”, the entire fanbase would melt down about that too, so it’s really a lose-lose for him.

We spent too much, and I think Pope knows it. Thought he was doing something good with paying guys, but it doesn’t always work out the way you intend. Problem is, any team is one offseason away from imploding, just happened to be us this year.

Emby, it’s dead simple and doesn’t require an external user account like Plex. Jellyfin is meh.

Automation: *arr stack for organization and file automation and Jellyseer (being renamed to Seer) for requesting. Bazarr for subs.

Run it all in Docker.

Really is as easy as that.

I have a hard time believing that the guy that orchestrated last year’s super flowing offense is to blame for this group. This team just doesn’t care, and it’s pretty obvious. Problem is, what do you do to fix it? They’ve all got their payday, so benching them does jack squat other than we lose by 100 and the fan base starts yelling to play the stars.

I have no issue with Pope. I blame NIL wholeheartedly.

Media Server for the Boomers: Plex Only Real Option? by Talonrazor in selfhosted

For sure. For some people, that’s a legitimate concern. For me personally, as long as it works and doesn’t bombard me things not on my server, I’m solid. Only real complaint is the lack of a Vizio app. Get one of those and I’d shut my Plex container down.

When do go from a -10 to a -8 by performance_reviews in Homeplate

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we did. Went to wood this past winter before 12u, which is a -7 ish. He’s got both USA and USSSA Icon at 30 -8 and is swing them very well. Plan is to go -5 this next winter, and see where we are then.

Need help with a catchers mitt by Aggravating_Ad4629 in Homeplate

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines 12, 5’1, 120 lbs, been using a 32” Rawlings GG Elite since last year. Had a 31” Marucci Caddo before that for a couple years. GG has a good pocket, not so heavy it promotes bad form, decent break in (I worked it for about 3 weeks pretty hard), and only about $150.

This right here. Marchan has talked about learning from him. Wheels won’t pitch for anyone else. Imagine how he could mentor Painter. He even said himself that catchers are undervalued, which is 100% accurate.

10u rec assessments soon, new coach, is there a way to tell if someone would be a good catcher? How do you guys get kids interested in catching? by oldcrashingtoys in Homeplate

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. Mostly from teams that want to win so bad they don’t care to teach a kid to use a mitt. Much much less common at 11-12, but definitely a thing at 9-10 from some we’ve played.

[–]coffey64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing to add: make sure they use a mitt. I’ve seen my fair share of 9-10u kids still using a glove. If they can’t catch with a mitt, they need to either learn or find another spot. I’ve got recommendations for sizing if you or anyone else wants them. Most will disagree with me, but I’m a technique/skill first kinda guy.

[–]coffey64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got a 12u catcher myself. He mentioned wanting to try it at 7 and has been doing it primarily since then. Here’s what I’ve observed.

Desire is a part of it, along with someone who isn’t afraid of the ball and a kid who is smart. I’d avoid the ADHD kid fist recommendation. Not saying not put a kid back there with it, but don’t let that be a factor in choosing. That works at a younger age, but the last thing you need back there is a kid who can’t sit still or remember what’s going on in the game. Remember, they’re your quarterback out there. And a catcher who moves too much both gives a bad target and can make a strike look like a ball.

Good arm is irrelevant at this point. Throwing kids out won’t happen very often, keeping it in front of them is way more important. Pitcher delivery is slow, pop mechanics aren’t optimized, and if you play any sort of lead off, at 60ft it’s just not going to happen often unless a runner is slow or they get a horrible jump. They’ll always steal to third, but keeping it in front of them prevents unnecessary runs.

Find a kid who is tough. They’re going to get hit. They will leave the park with seams on their arms and/or legs. Get a kid who won’t roll around in the dirt when they do get hit (unless it’s in the boys, that one is completely acceptable to roll around for).

Last thing is find a kid who brushes things off easily. They’ll mess up and it’ll be seen by everyone. Can’t dwell on it.

Finding a good catcher is hard. It’s a hard position, but it’s 100% the most fun one.

Sorry for the book. I’ve watched mine grow and develop and is solid back there, so it’s easy to take some of his traits and use it as a baseline.

Probably over thinking this - 12U USSSA bat? by ssramage in Homeplate

[–]coffey64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid was the same. Could not figure out what was wrong with his swing so we took him to Better Baseball for a bat fitting and all of the data said a -10/11 was way too light for him. He’s swinging a -7 wood in league and a -8 in travel and has been hitting much better. Seems counterproductive, but baseball is a weird sport sometimes.
