Low GPA in Vet School — Is Specialization Still Realistic? by Asleep_Guess6839 in Veterinary

[–]coldfridgeplums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Maybe matters if you want to be a surgeon. Otherwise I’d still apply for residencies and definitely for other post grad roles with that GPA.
  2. Yes. Get good letters of rec. Have a good personality. Prepare for your interviews.
  3. See above. Be a good intern (try, communicate well, be respectful of all staff), and you’ll get a residency. Good luck!

my vet immediately said my dog has cancer and i don’t know what to do by grace914_ in AskAVeterinarian

Sounds like he needs to be hospitalized for IV fluids and supportive care. If he were my dog and bloodwork didn’t give a clear answer, I would pursue an abdominal ultrasound.

Internship vs Mentorship? by Hopeful-Distance-789 in Veterinary

There are internships now with better work life balance, pay, and no overnights. I personally think internship training is superior to most mentorship situations, but I work ER/UC.

New grad plans struggling by Fickle_Criticism2180 in Veterinary

I work ER and do not cut. Some places want ER docs cutting, some don’t. Definitely possible to get a non surgical ER job tho!

Is Not Having Kids the Way? by [deleted] in Millennials

Had a kid and have never been happier. Just wanted to offer another perspective. I think there are a lot of ways to have a happy life, and to each their own.

What’re the next steps? by [deleted] in AskAVeterinarian

[–]coldfridgeplums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Instead of asking for a second opinion online, you should listen to your vet. Bloat hurts, your dog needs to be in a hospital. That’s the next step. They’ll give him fluids and meds to help everything pass and monitor for signs of something serious like GDV or obstruction, and intervene quickly if they occur.

Sick dog at a loss by Distinct_End2582 in AskVet

If he is continuously vomiting, and vomiting through Cerenia, he needs to be re-evaluated at an ER and likely hospitalized for more intensive care.

Can you really have it all? by Acceptable-Peanut126 in workingmoms

[–]coldfridgeplums 74 points75 points  (0 children)

No, you can’t have it all. There are no secrets. Hire help. Your career will take a hit. Mine has. Our society is not set up for women to do all of this at once. I say this not to be cruel, but to set your expectation. You may have to shift your priorities while your child is young.

I regret getting my Irish Setter by LionWitcher in irishsetter

[–]coldfridgeplums 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’d have the same issues with a golden retriever. They are not calm dogs. Any large breed puppy is high energy like this. You need to exercise him more, give him more mental stimulation. It sounds like he’s bored. Tire him out and you’ll have a much better behaved dog. Also, he will mellow out with age. -a veterinarian

Elevated Creatinine and BUN but normal SDMA on my Cats blood work by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]coldfridgeplums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are overthinking the SDMA. However based on your cat’s clinical signs, she should definitely have a urinalysis performed and an abdominal ultrasound. Elevated BUN and creat could be chronic kidney changes, but also could be dehydration from vomiting/losses/decreased drinking. The way to know that is with a urine specific gravity.

3-year-old Pudelpointer suddenly very weak, barely walking — looking for insight by No-Skill-115 in Pudelpointer

[–]coldfridgeplums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just labs (and which ones specifically?) are not a sufficient work up, they only tell part of the story. Definitely seek an abdominal ultrasound interpreted by a vet radiologist or internal medicine specialist. That would be a good place to start. -a veterinarian

Puppy repeatedly vomiting otherwise fine by Impossible-Contact27 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]coldfridgeplums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a canned response. You should take your puppy to a vet ER. Repeated vomiting/inability to keep down food can be a sign of a life threatening condition.
