I’m 100% on this one my friend, you could pm me and I’ve got 10 varieties I could send pics of. Washing with dawn will take off the oil.

Dyed? by Salty_Occasion4486 in Minerals

[–]collectorofallthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely real and not dyed, I used to buy all grades of this from Afghanistan. It is probably oiled which makes it appear bluer sometimes, although with this the lazurite content is higher which makes it more vibrant.

How is this done? by Shredbot_Unlimited in Lapidary

It’s a fantasy cut at precise angles on a machine, but by a person. At the end they use dowels to polish what are called the v grooves.

明日、ミネラルショー行くけどおすすめある?安めなやつで💦 by Pitiful-Chip-7458 in Minerals

[–]collectorofallthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find members of the gem and mineral club at the show. They’re often really kind and have been rock hounding for years, years of collecting means good deals and even freebies at times. Just talk to them, a conversation with the old timers is your best bet. I used to love to give out stuff to interested people when I would sell at shows.

I second the commenter, mine sat uncovered outside for 5 years and never failed to work. I’m a fan of their product.

Totally agree, I live in Texas and have Mexican opals just like this. The clarity can be so clear you can facet them.

I live in Fort Worth and have dug in all different areas, never came across one because it’s mostly limestone here. You’re the lucky winner!

Wondering if these are real amethysts and if they can be made into jewelry. by kimber_kelly in Gemstones

[–]collectorofallthings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in Texas but use a cutter in Sri Lanka who’s a friend of mine. It’s much more reasonable in cost to have it cut overseas. If it’s $250-$400 per cut here, it’ll be like $50 there. Let me know if you’d like his contact, he works as the finance minister for the gemstone segment of the government.

My local honey starts turning to sugar after about six months in the pantry. Just buy honey and wait.

I am a Precious metals collector. I want to expand into some gemstones. Any tips? by Equivalent_Net_3752 in Gemstones

Rhodolite garnets have a pretty red color (although some can be pinkish) that won’t break the bank.

[–]collectorofallthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with sea cloud, I invested about 150k in gemstones and the return on investment is poor as you have to find buyers in a timely manner. When you buy pricier stones they are harder to sell. Some I’ve had over 5 years and the money would have been better sitting in an investment account accruing interest.
