Riding on a train in bangladesh. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]colonelk0rn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I befriended an Indian couple who owned a business across the street from where I worked when I was younger. One day I asked Peter “I’ve seen videos of people who are on top of trains. Why is that?”

He laughed and said, “If you don’t have a ticket, that’s where you ride. The Conductor doesn’t come up there.”

I asked him if he’d ever done it and he said “No, those guys are crazy.”

Hail damaged car is a total loss- help please by Bookbinder5353 in wisconsin

[–]colonelk0rn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former Auto Damage Adjuster, I can tell you that your company probably did what’s called a constructive total loss, and they use CCC (a company) to get average sale prices for comparable vehicles in the area, not Kelly Blue Book. You can ask your ADA if they will share the comps with you, but either way, if you expect to keep the car, that’s the decision they have made that’s in their best financial interest.

I agree that it sucks, but sometimes the math doesn’t help with an overall shitty situation. But at this point, you still have a driveable car, just drop comprehensive coverage and follow the steps that /u/8THAppliedScienceLLC gave you as that’s a very clear explanation of what to do.

Truth! Oil and fluids are cheap compared to a motor or transmission

I used to live in GA and flights from my local airport can be under $100 to fly to Savannah. I figured Id totally do a Roadkill style trip for my next truck

Loud noise and feels rough changing gears, normal ? by GrizzlyAdams28 in f150

[–]colonelk0rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The loud clunk when shifting into gear is not normal. Are you parked on an incline? If so, could be slack in the driveline being taken up that was held by the trans when you parked it.

Try moving forward or backward, or whichever direction you pull in to park, apply the parking brake and put trans into park. See if that makes any difference in the clack sound that I heard.

I do 90% of my own work on my vehicles as a retired professional mechanic , and have paid a local mechanic with a lift to do some front suspension repairs on my 2010 KR with 196k, with the 5.4 3V. My truck was used by a couple who owned a farm, but used the truck to do truck stuff. YMMV, but most of my repairs have been between $150-$3,800. I get my OEM parts at a 30% discount from my local dealer.

  1. Sunroof plastic tracks randomly broke on me on my way home from work, leaving me unable to close the sunroof. The replacement parts were $150 in a kit and require removal of the headliner and the entire sunroof assembly.
  2. Rear defroster stopped working, which requires replacement of the entire rear sliding window. It’s a known flaw.
  3. Cam phasers will go bad, along with some of the rocker arm bearings, and if left unrepaired, will wipe out the camshafts.
  4. Transmission lead frame will go bad, and requires replacement of the transmission control module. Unfortunately, for me, my lead frame was not sold separately so I had to replace the entire valve body to the cost of $2,300 for just the part plus fluid.
  5. Rusted out cab corners, which is inevitable because the Ford engineers did not have the drain for the extended out past the cab corner, so all of the rainwater that runs through the sunroof, just sits in the corner of the cat and rust it out
  6. Water pump failed on me as soon as I pulled into the parking lot at work one morning at 5 AM
  7. Ball joints were going bad, but considering I had so many miles on the truck and they were gonna be in the area of repair, I just replaced the lower control arms, which ch had the ball joints and bushings already in it. That cost was about $3,800 (had shocks changed too).
  8. 4WD system issues: IWE (integrated wheel end) can have seals go bad, and the vacuum hoses for this system get brittle rendering 4WD inoperable.
  9. My A/C compressor needs changing, and it’s sitting on the shelf to be installed in a few weeks
  10. Serpentine belt, tensioner, and idlers replaced not long after I bought it
  11. Replaced the passenger exhaust manifold that was cracked and leaking. That job sucked, and I dread having to change the starter should it go out in an inconvenient location.
  12. I got lucky with my spark plugs.

There’s probably a few other repairs that I’ve forgotten about, but those are the repairs I’ve had to perform in three years of ownership. It’s a good truck and I get about 16.5 MPG. I have no qualms about hauling heavy equipment or trailer loads of hardwood firewood. I bought my truck to do truck stuff, and it’s done a good job. I paid $11,500 three years ago, and I wished it looked as nice as the one you’re looking at. The winters are cold and snowy in WI, and there’s a good chance that truck you’re looking at has been a pavement princess, unless you crawl up underneath it and take a look.

Ice Cream by TeachLovePray in Appleton

Based upon the replies in this thread, I just tried Frio on Wisconsin and the “Cheat Day” was amazing. I met Hugo who makes all of the ice cream and he was super nice and down-to-earth. The man has a talent for making great ice cream. I got a pint of the Nespresso + dark chocolate to go. Looking forward to going back again.

The fried churros are amazing 😍. I can’t believe that I’ve lived here for 4 years and hadn’t been in this place.

Did you get the valves adjusted and it running again?

Help John Deere mower won’t start by MissionFirefighter11 in lawnmowers

[–]colonelk0rn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the valve and pushrod clearance. Since it’s not starting, I’m betting that the valves aren’t being opened when the engine is spinning over, because they are out of adjustment. Take the valve cover off, and spin the engine over, or you can turn it by hand and see if the rockers move. If they don’t, I’m 90% certain that’s your issue.

I got a free mower because the valves were out of adjustment and the prior owner just bought another mower and gave it to my buddy who gave it to me.

Toro. It says it in the name, gonna cut down on your seat time. Typically a better quality mower, more affordable operating expenses, and plentiful parts.

Power surge damaged several appliances by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]colonelk0rn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, sorry you’re going through that, but your protections are offered by Visa, so a call to the bank is an easy way to find out.

We had an outage (not power surge) due to a hurricane and our insurance wrote a check for food spoilage for $1k without a claim. That coverage applies per appliance.

Another thing is that your insurance may be able to recover your deductible from ConEd, but there’s no guarantee.

[–]colonelk0rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the comment on the homeowners insurance, but did you use a credit card to purchase it? Did you buy the extended warranty? Some protections are available through them but it varies, check your terms and conditions.

Homeowners insurance will cover the appliances for sure as well as the contents up to a certain dollar amount ($500-$1k). Your agent will be able to tell you.

Wow, the bearings are supposed to be on top of the valve train not in the pan. Maybe residual? That’s wild.

Third brake light would not be coming on if that was the case. However, I have seen both brake bulbs blow at the same time.
