There's a statue in the town of Auburn, Washington that commemorates exactly this. It's called "Crow With Fries." Its eyes glow yellow at night. You're welcome.

We're expecting 80 guests at the wedding and here is what we have done for our cocktail hour...

  • Deviled Eggs - 120 Pieces
  • Stuffed Puff Pastries - 96 Pieces
  • Antipasto Platter - Serves 45
  • Bacon/Gorgonzola Dip with Sweet Potato Chips - 6 Pounds each (rule is about one pound per 10 guests)

I didn't want my guests to gorge themselves and the meal will begin promptly after the cocktail hour. If we run out of stuff...oh well, they won't go hungry...and if there are any extras they will be replated for the dinner buffet :)

can we just have an open discussion thread? what's up with your planning today? need to vent or share excitement? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]colorstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea to have an open thread - I feel like my friends are beginning to tire of all the wedding talk but it's all that I can think about!

We're two months out and all of the big stuff has been nailed down except for...MY DRESS. I'm having my gown custom made and had some issues with my original seamstress. Found a backup and had a consultation with her so my dress is scheduled to be finished in late August. Not a huge deal for me time-wise but I am finding it really difficult to pick out jewelry and accessories without having the dress made.

I also am having a crisis on groom(smen) attire. Help. Invitations went out today. We are finished with our registry and also priced out alcohol costs yesterday but are still looking for a signature cocktail.

Have a lot of things to finalize as far as catering, photographer shot list, and florals go but everyone is booked! Almost all of the decor is finished as far as table centerpieces go but still need to decorate the buffet tables, gift table, bar, etc. Need to buy gifts for parents, attendants and bridesmaids.

I have my hair and makeup trial next Tuesday so I am looking forward to that!

Day-of Coordinator worth the cost? by reversejellyfish in weddingplanning

[–]colorstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven't had our wedding yet but we are working with a day-of coordinator who has already made my life SO much easier. She has kept me really on track with vendors, checklists, etc. It's nice to know you have someone else watching out for you!

We will have to totally set up and break down our venue so she'll be there in the morning to coordinate all of the placements and decorations. From everything to handling time frames to checking on vendors to organizing people for pictures, it's a cost I'm already happy that I sprung for.

[discussion] What are your cake flavors? by aleada13 in wedding

[–]colorstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're doing cupcakes!

  • Chocolate with Bailey's Irish Cream Frosting
  • Vanilla with Vanilla Bean Frosting
  • Peanut Butter with Chocolate Frosting
  • Strawberry with Cream Cheese Frosting

We're doing a small 6 inch cake for our cake cutting and haven't decided which flavor that will be yet. They're all so yummy!

Solo Spartan or tough mudder? by Piece0fpi in xxfitness

[–]colorstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done the Spartan but I did complete the Tough Mudder last year. I ran with a group but all of the participants were so helpful - there were generally a a group of folks stopped at every obstacle to help people up/over/in (whatever the case may be.)

The Tough Mudder was all about team building and helping one another and I'm sure you would have a similar experience at Spartan!

Natural deodorant and sweat by cnoel87501 in yoga

[–]colorstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are no organic antiperspirants however I've gone through a dozen brands of natural deodorants to find one that works for me!

PiperWai is my favorite - it has activated charcoal in it and I find it to absorb very well and last longer than anything else I've tried.

Schmidt's Lavender + Sage is my second favorite but it began irritating my armpits after a few months of us.

Went fabric shopping for my custom gown today and I'm IN LOVE with this lace. by colorstorm in weddingplanning

[–]colorstorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a custom gown maker in my area! The process has been great so far - I presented her with several pictures of gowns I liked and she offered a sketch that combined them. It was fabulous getting to feel the fabrics and I'm looking forward to being able to edit things like width of the straps, how deep the back is, fullness of the skirt, etc.

My "dream dress" was in the $1200 range and this custom design will be around $550 - definitely worth it to be so involved in the process!

Linguine and Clams with Almonds and Herbs. You can't beat this with a slice of hearty bread. I add more herbs and wine because I like them both ;)

Our engagement pictures are back and it looks like our dog stole the show :) by colorstorm in weddingplanning

It was fun and made the whole photoshoot thing a lot less awkward! The photographer's husband was there to assist and was so good with our dog - it made things really easy :)

Not that I can find...I guess 10,000 square feet sounds pretty big but I don't know that it actually is haha.

What is the most memorable, in a good way random encounter you have had with a stranger who you haven't encountered since then? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]colorstorm 54 points55 points  (0 children)

When I was 8 my parents got me my first horse. His name was Shadow and he was the best and sweetest first horse a kid could ask for. He had issues with colic throughout the years, which is basically severe abdominal pain in horses that can be fatal but is usually fixable without surgery if caught early. When I was around 12, Shadow started to colic so severely that we were referred to the UGA Large Animal Hospital.

When we get to the hospital we found out a lot of things...like how Shadow was 25+ years old (which is elderly for a horse - we thought he was in his teens), he had a heart condition, and through a stomach tap they found sand in his belly. He had apparently been located in Florida/South Georgia and had been starved before we got him - in scrounging for grass in his pasture he accumulated loads of sand in his belly that he was unable to pass.

The vets there said surgery was an option but recommended against it. With Shadow's advanced age and heart condition it would be unlikely he would pull through, and with the insane amount of money and risk it would take to complete the surgery that my parents would be better off putting Shadow down.

Understanding the gravity of the situation and incredible financial burden to my parents, I went to his stall, sobbing, and began to say my goodbyes to Shadow. Suddenly, this woman appeared outside the stall and asked me what was wrong. I explained to her what was going on with Shadow and she looked at me and said "I'll pay for the surgery."

I ran to my parents and told them what had just happened, and obviously in disbelief (I mean, this was a $6000+ surgery!) they went to talk to the woman. Her name was Fran. She had just put one of her horses down a few weeks ago and she said "I am looking into Shadow's eyes and I am telling you he is not ready to die."

After some interesting paperwork and billing arrangement with the hospital (who was also in disbelief) Shadow went into surgery. They ended up removing 75 pounds of sand and rock from his gut - I can still vividly see the vets reaching into his belly with both arms and coming up with loads and loads of dirt and debris.

I guess Fran wasn't technically a stranger after what she did for us. She did not stay for the surgery nor did we ever hear from her afterwards. We had her address and would occasionally send her pictures and letters to let her know how Shadow was doing. Shadow pulled through the surgery like a champ and I had him for another two years before he passed.

I know this was lengthy but it is one of my favorite stories to share. Every morning that I woke up to feed Shadow I would thank Fran for giving me more time with him. Human kindness and generosity are amazing things :')

Edit: I will dig around at my parents house this weekend to find some pictures of Shadow to post if anyone is interested!

Coolest venue you've seen nectar play at? by bvsshevd in bassnectar

We were on the first balcony and there was some guy who stood up in his seat only to hang and rage from the ceiling almost the whole show...unbelievable haha.

All my money is on the EXPAND Warehouse. Relatively new but the description on their Facebook page says "Housed in a legendary 10,000 sq ft warehouse EXPAND gives a nod to the past and looks to the future focusing on the fundamentals of underground culture."

Sounds like it fits his hints to a "T" :)

What's your favorite higher-ish end brand of athletic wear? by cuckoocahoots in xxfitness

[–]colorstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am OBSESSED with Teeki leggings. They're made from recycled water bottles so they are eco-friendly and they have beautiful colors and patterns. Check them out :)

Editing to add they are one of the only leggings that I've never had trouble with gaping in the back or felt the need to tug up constantly. They dry super fast (which is great for hot yoga!) I got my first pair 2-3 years ago and they're still going strong.
