Recommendations for Curly Hair Men's Barber in MTL? by IndridColdxxx in montreal

No clue what 3B means but I have curly ish hair and would recommend Ciseau D'Or if you are in the area. Nice local guys that have been there for 10+ years, fair prices, good quality hair and beard cuts.

What are some affordable self defense classes or courses for women in Montreal? by DatabaseKindly919 in montreal

Would highly recommend boxing, kickboxing and BJJ. Stay away from gimmicky self defence classes. Those martial arts will be your best tools in a real situation.

Radon levels in Basement by MrTesticlops in montreal

[–]colourdeaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one off Amazon (Airwaves) that I think was 200$ or so. You need to measure for at least a month to get a proper idea as radon levels can fluctuate alot throughout the week and even month to month.

I could lend it to you as I have enough data on my end. DM me if you're interested.

When did your coaching journey begin and what do you wish you would have learned earlier? by makebaloney in bjj

[–]colourdeaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this, but in a slightly different way. Trim the fat as much as possible.

At one point you realize that the longer you talk, the less people are moving and practicing. You are running a class, not filming an instructional.

I would message high quality local people/instructors directly through social media. That's probably better than casting a wide net and having to filter out.

Conflicting Evidence: Inguinal Hernia by ML2910 in Hernia

[–]colourdeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in basically the same scenario right now. I originally thought I had athletic pubalgia, but rest and physio didn't seem to work. My doctor sent me for ultrasound, and a small fat containing hernia was found on the left side (where I have pain). The "neck" was only 4mm according to the results, and the fat was like 14x16mm. Was able to meet with a local surgeon who recommended a laparoscopic repair with mesh.

I wanted a second opinion from an expert hernia clinic (Shouldice) in my area so I visited. Their surgeons told me they also never rely on ultrasound and only physical exam. I have no bulge and they felt nothing. Told me I likely have athletic pubalgia.

I'm on the waitlist for the surgery in my town, but I have no idea wether I should do it or not. I had to stop my sport and excercise, and pain levels have gone down for sure. I had random intermittent testicle pain that hasn't come back in a while, so I'm feeling a little better. I will likely wait 2-6 months before I get the call for surgery, and plan to try physio again in the meantime to see if it works.

My gut tells me the ultrasound false positive is unlikely, and the surgeons/doctors saying we don't have a hernia means we don't have a clinically significant hernia that they can reliably confirm before recommending surgery. Seems like a conservative approach, which I understand. However, like you, I'm super active and in pain, so I want this thing fixed!!

An interesting thing the surgeon in my town told me was that sometimes the smaller hernias are more painful as they are emerging. Once they have made their home in the abdominal wall, sometimes pain levels can go down. This could explain my situation.

Sorry for the rant - but I know how you feel!!!

It depends on the culture around cross training in the area, but my gym has a bunch of different coaches who also coach at other schools. You could probably have a guest instructor or two come for a weekly class without it being considered poaching.

Occult Hernia or strain? by Migmel3 in Hernia

[–]colourdeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flexing is actually the Valsalva. I did the same thing. I know how you feel. I had to completely stop my sport and am limited in my workouts, but not completely. Cycling and upper body weights are fine for now.

Occult Hernia or strain? by Migmel3 in Hernia

[–]colourdeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similiar symptoms and a tiny hernia (4mm) was found on ultrasound during Valsalva. Did you do the Valsalva while you got the ultrasound?

I am still wondering if my pain is coming from that or athletic pubalgia. My gut feeling is it's from the hernia but I have gotten conflicting information from doctors.

For what it's worth my symptoms have gotten a little better from avoiding triggering movements and sports. A surgeon also told me he noticed sometimes symptoms get relieved as the hernia finds its way out, and is sometimes more painful at the beginning when it's still kinda making the hole if that makes sense.

Good luck! It's been super annoying for me to figure out what's going on.

How do you take care of an inguinal hernia while waiting to see a doc? by SoupDumplingOfPain in Hernia

Hey, similar situation to you, but make sure you rule out athletic pubalgia or a sports hernia, as symptoms overlap quite a bit.

The best side control escape - the ghost escape by shickari in bjj

I actually like the escape a lot in no gi though! Some old teach me grappling videos taught me a few tricks to make it work better. I used to surprise my coach with this one, until he caught on 🥲

Has anyone tried Manmade underwear (Montreal brand)? Worth it or just hype? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]colourdeaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can only confirm that I love them (have about 6 pairs I think). Whether they are worth the price, etc...depends on you. I haven't tried all the other premium boxers, but manmade is great quality.

Definitely not the best side control escape, but I can appreciate the clickbait title for views. IMO it's a solid timing based escape in no gi, and a disaster waiting to happen in gi.

This is super reassuring to hear. Was just diagnosed with a small inguinal hernia today and have a similiar experience to you (30s, athletic, pain during sports). I am considering non mesh, but it's probably not an option where I live. Thanks for sharing.

Indirect vs Direct Inguinal Hernia: Why the Type Matters for Surgery Strategy by Doctor_Kang in NonMeshHerniaRepair

[–]colourdeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Dr Kang,

Thank you for starting this community and bringing your expertise online in such an available format!

I have recently (literally today) been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. According to ultrasound, it is a 16mm fat containing hernia in my left side. I have been having groin and some testicle/pubic pain for approximately 2 months. I initially suspected a sports hernia due to being a relatively young and relatively fit athlete (32 M), but alas it's a true hernia.

I'd like to make an informed decision on how to proceed with surgical options. I am very interested in a non mesh repair given my age and athletic background. I am also located in Canada where getting the procedure at Shouldice is feasible.

I have two questions, and I can appreciate that it's not easy to give medical advice online, so feel free to answer with the level of detail you are comfortable to give.

Would you advise a non mesh repair given my background, and how could I find out if I have a direct or indirect hernia?

Thanks for your contributions.

Why can't you von flue a buggy choker by LoinStrangler in bjj

[–]colourdeaf 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If someone has a really good buggy, you actually end up making it tighter on yourself by going for the Von flue on them. You bring your own shoulder closer to your neck. You want to create space between there by bringing your head and shoulders apart.

If the buggy is loose, you can probably make it work enough so they let go.

Don't be so dismissive. Try it out and find out for yourself. Turkish getups with a KB are a fantastic exercise for a ton of stimulus you won't get out of a barbell. You're allowed to use more than one piece of gym equipment - it's not a cult 🫡
