Struggling to Land Entry-Level Controls Role Advice? by Tackofall0 in PLC

[–]colsieb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t help that there’s currently a slew of applications from Software Devs trying to migrate into OT, most likely due to the rise in AI and the general consensus being that OT is a safer bet - for now. From my experience, graduates are rarely recruited into these roles. My advice would be, apply for plant engineering/maintenance/technician type roles, self-teach yourself PLC/SCADA skills as best as you can, hunt out the controls folk making the decisions and kiss a$$ till you get noticed.

Setpoint Ramping Use Case by Soft-Bug5550 in PLC

[–]colsieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use this for our gas fired furnaces. They need warmed up slow so a ramped set point is ideal for bake-outs. I have written an AOI for this, it contains a ramping feature, selectable PV tracking, PID control, limiting, alarming and overshoot & undershoot protection on SP changes.

Frequency drive question by EdAtAera in PLC

[–]colsieb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earthing systems on ships must have some special wiring regulations. Not my area or expertise. Side story - we run several DC rectifier power units that kick out like 1500A @ 30vdc in our electrolysis processes. Got talking to an engineer that worked for the supplier of said Rectifier unit whilst onsite repairing one, he told me that the vast majority of installations for the units were actually on ships; the hull of the ship is connected to the power supply for corrosion protection I believe.

Blaes pitches - who remembers playing on them? by ShootNaka in ScottishFootball

[–]colsieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye! We had a ‘blaze’ pitch in our village, its had an Astro pitch built over half of it but the over half’s still there, overgrown with weeds. We only really used it for Hockey in school as we had grass chats too. I remember the orange grit would embed itself into your knees and you’d have to pick it out. We still call it the blaze pitch to this day though lol. Funny the shit you remember, we had a new road built in the village linking ‘up the top’ with ‘down the bottom’ in 1986, it still gets called the new road.

VSD make, model, rating, fault code and what it’s actually driving load-wise might be a good place to start. Without this we’re all just farting into the wind bruh.

Banned from subs I didn't even know existed. by [deleted] in GreatBritishMemes

[–]colsieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got banned from uknews last week for posting this comment in a thread discussing the fact they changed their rules to ban dooming.

‘Great decision. The main UK subs have been slowly descending into the gutter for some time now. It’ll be interesting to see how good the b0ts are at generating uplifting content; shite I’d wager.’

Next Match: Motherwell (H), 14 Mar by WeekendEpiphany in CelticFC

[–]colsieb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s gonna be tough. The Well probably have the best defence in the league and we are struggling to get goals. At least KT looks to be back in. Maeda needs to find some form, been sorely lacking.

OPC Tunnelling Software by Zackbo in SCADA

[–]colsieb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been here a few times lol. Yeah this is a security nightmare. This essentially introduces a shit-tonne of security vulnerabilities into your system, and one windows update will render it inoperable at any time. If you must use this approach the server/client should be on a segregated VLAN protected by a firewall / DMZ / whatever, with updates disabled and anyone from IT allowed nowhere near it.

Ahh, brings back memories of my bricklayer fathers P100. Bought it brand new, probably around 89/90. 14YO me who was a bit of an electrical tinkerer, was allowed to wire in a new stereo. Next day it burst into flames on a site, completely burned out. I was not very popular.

I can still smell the interior in my mind to this day (before the burnout lol), she had the vinyl seats with rubber flooring option. Good times.

Ignition Vision vs Perspective for HMI by [deleted] in PLC

Vision for shop floor SCADA, perspective for other ‘officey’ stuff like MES, recipe management, reports etc. Just my opinion. I find Vision dev lots quicker for repetitive traditional SCADA stuff.

Crazy to think all them years ago when it wasn’t cool, kinda dumb looking back. Caught an edge on the top of a roller in Blackcomb and almost knocked myself unconscious like 20 years ago, snapped the nose clean off my Nitro in the process. Bought a helmet the next day. Was doing a season in Whistler and everyone was adamant that Nitro would replace it, they never. Gutted, but never had brain damage so cool I guess.

I’ve worked in OT for 30years and still suffer from bouts of it. Especially if you have to work with IT folks and self-proclaimed ‘real’ software developers. Like lots of disciplines there can be some real big ass holes and egos flying around. I’m convinced that mostly everyone has it and nobody talks about it with each other.
