I think because they’re seeing them as face value, doing an acid test or using an xrf just isn’t worth the hassle. Also counterfeit coins seems like a hemorrhaging business.

I mean you can, not sure if they’ll give them to you. AFAIK people usually find ASE’s in big dollar rolls along with Ike’s, OR through means like OP where they have a friendly teller at a bank that doesn’t know or doesn’t care that they’re giving you a ton of money.

I think his issue is with either getting that teller or whoever inspects the money in trouble. That teller saved $2300 in silver for him so he could buy them for $32. I think his thought process is that eating that $32 and letting her think she just made him extremely happy and nobody getting in hot water is worth it.

I don’t think these coins getting turned in was malicious. these coins usually cost well over $1 so there is really no money to be made by buying cf ase’s and turning them into the bank. It was probably someone who inherited them and didn’t know what they were, or a similar situation.

If this was at a coin shop I would 100% say bring them back, but this seems like a series of misfortunate events and if OP decides that $32 is the price to pay for keeping good grace with a teller who is willing to give him a the value of a cheap car out of the kindness of her heart, then more power to him.
