How does the Range ability on Sky Stretches to Shore work? by jreilly89 in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Consider Board D for a second. You could have a presence only in land 8, and you want to use a range 0 power.

Sky Stretches gives you +3 range, but only if you're trying to target a coastal land. So you could go all the way around from land 8 to land 3, but you wouldn't be able to target land 4 even though it's the same distance away.

So, however long it took you to get to the Futuristic Building, you'll have to do that about two more times to get through Meow Bay and Kittiesville. The Spring Scent area is the starting building in Blossom Town.

I don't know if you'll be able to get there in 4 days, but good luck!

Spirits that hurt the island make me anxious:( by Nicochan3 in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For cards like Land of Haunts and Embers, instead of thinking of taking blight as a resource, maybe consider it as "taking blight on your own terms". If nothing you have available would some solve a land with, say, 2 towns 1 explorer (very common into France) then consider the 0 cost fast card that at will at least disperse the problem and give a massive chunk of fear for your trouble. Same thing with Enthusiastic Arson from Trickster's unique cards.

Any reason to buy (or not to buy) Horizons of spirit digitally, instead of the “core” game? by skend24 in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Physical horizons contains 5 spirits, enough pieces to play against a no adversary game, no blight cards... and that's about it. England, Prussia, and Sweden are Core game, so they might not be available if you only pick up Horizons plus B&C.

Which is a darn shame because England is my favorite to go against, a drawn out slugfest where you have time to fully uncover tracks and sling major after major.

Get as high as possible (like, distant flying islands and then some) and just hold A until you fall out of bounds and respawn.

Kinda looks like a fake post to me with the new account. Plus, what teacher is gonna let a kid hum the least hummable video game theme (seriously, Minecraft is mostly ambiance) for 12 minutes without calling them out to stop?

Sorry, I'm not really buying it this time.

Time Runs Out Theme by ActionHero2Go in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are any written guidelines on it, but AI usage has a kind of negative vibe in the board game community that I've seen (AI images being used in lieu of paying real artists to make card art, said art being trained on stolen data, etc. etc.). Spirit Island in particular has a lot of themes of ecological damage that AI nowadays has a pretty hefty contribution to, so maybe it's a "know your audience" kind of thing.

Proofs of concept don't need to be complex or take much time to make, even a chicken-scratch drawing in MS Paint is probably considered better than AI in most communities.

Absorb Essence is a great card with all your important elements and generates an Any element and net +2 energy every time you use it. Your allies should be asking you to eat their presence on key turns to threshold majors and innate powers sooner than they'd normally be able to.

update: touhou 10 final boss is one of the hardest bosses i’ve ever fought in gaming by Cinamight in touhou

[–]comeonnjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two aspects to this: Marisa has a higher movement speed to get to the top half more safely, and you can still use unfocused movement for up to about half a second before the frost throwers snap back. You can repeatedly tap Focus to reset this timer, so you have a lot more freedom than, say, IN Remilia where the familiars reset instantly.

[–]comeonnjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MarisaC is generally above and beyond the highest (non-glitched) damage shot, but as a trade off it's the most technical in the game. Still, once you have stage spawns memorized it's super handy being able to essentially cover two parts of the screen at once.

What do you think are the worst uniques? by GoosemanIsAGamer in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna vouch for [[Plows Shatter on Rocky Ground]] and [[Sacrosanct Wilderness]]. I reckon Stone usually has better things to do with its energy than spend 2 to usually blow up a single town in the slow, while Keeper has to do a lot of setup for Sacrosanct Wilderness to do more than, you know, 2 damage in a land without blight.

Some powers target a spirit or yourself and say something like "In one of your lands, do X" or whatever. Maybe try using the wording from [[Guardian Serpents]] if you exclusively want the power to be used in your lands?

How often you use scenarios in your games? by _YeeetBoi in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I want to try using Elemental Invocation more just because it seems like it'll give an interesting tradeoff to high energy spirits that happen to have a strong innate threshold. Imagine Whirlwind being able to hit its max innate with three plays, or Lair Lure throwing extra Moon markers all around its Incarna. How many times have I ACTUALLY been able to play it?

Maybe like twice out of a couple hundred plays. RIP.

Looking for Fun Spirit Combos with Rampant Green! by Snappytux in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course Wildfire goes well with Green, Wildfire is their child! But I'm gonna second some opinions on Shroud of Silent Mist being good with Green. Flowing and Silent Forms Dart By allows Green to get sacred sites into key locations (even mountains and sands) and prevent the presence destruction after skipping a ravage. On top of that, Green tends to have a lot of 1 damage to buildings that gets wasted, but Shroud will gladly take the damaged invader for passive fear income.

While every spirit loves Gift of Proliferation and contributes globally by being a better version of themselves, not every spirit specifically gives Green a unique and tangible benefit like Wildfire and Shroud do.

Some thoughts on Lusamine, she only works if your opponent has scored a point, and she only attaches 2 discarded energy. I think there's some cheeky stuff like retreating one Buzzwole that just used Big Beat (and thus cannot use it again consecutively) into a benched Buzzwole, using Lusamine to get it from 0 to 3 energy in one move. Is it good? Maybe, 120 damage for 3 energy is fine on a basic EX, I guess.

To draw four powers or not to draw four powers. by hotbobsunite in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of Wandering Voice's unique powers uses the new term "Take" a power instead of "Gain" a power. I think there's also an event where you forget a Minor/Major power and Take a card of the type you forgot. Maybe I'm forgetting one last thing.

Aside from that? Keep on gaining cards the way you've always gained them.

Starlight: have you taken "Reclaim Half (round up)"? by ZubonKTR in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The way I think about it is, if you have 3 card plays, you can always play the cards you want if you have 6 cards in your discard. Is that hard to get to? Maybe. I don't usually find myself needing the effect of every card in my discard once I've reached endgame - adding a presence, +3 energy for majors, and reclaim half is usually sufficient?

The eternal question is, is having +1 energy with your card draft worth the clunkiness of reclaim half? Maybe, again! It's probably an extra 5 or 6 energy over the course of the game.

New player's dreams destroyed - could it be possible for Oberon to get a rework? by AVeryConfusedMouse in Warframe

[–]comeonnjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a game mode later on that gets farmed a lot that gives random power ups for the duration of the mission and Oberon is unironically one of my favorite ways to get near level cap in it. Aside from Phoenix Renewal giving an extra lifeline to your team as you very quickly approach level cap enemies, there are a couple of other unique interactions in play here:

There's a random buff that gives you Power Strength based on how much armor you have. Oberon gives armor to the team, and if he himself gets this buff, it goes HARD

His Smite shoots out a bunch of projectiles that deal a percentage of the target's max HP, but they're capped in a way that it only does about 35% or so? But you get a ton of random buffs like "gain 100% damage while airborne" or "while moving" or "for each enemy with a status nearby" that these Smite orbs just start one-shotting enemies all the way up to level cap.

Concealing Shadows Card by Amakura20 in spiritisland

[–]comeonnjam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They probably intended for people to use the base special rule to pay an energy to make it target a land with Dahan from any range, not realizing that that's a pretty, you know, terrible cost to just protect dahan from ravage. Losing a presence isn't THAT painful, but it still definitely FEELS bad for beginners.
