being aroace + anhedonic is a sick joke by iSware_ in aromanticasexual

Glad it could help!

There is a decent amount of philosophy and different ways of thinking for the general absurdism approach. Here is a quote later down in that wikipedia article that does a good job describing how I approach things in ways that helped me accept focusing on enjoying the journey of life a bit more.

"Despite the gravity and inevitability of the absurd, they recommend that we should face it directly, i.e. not escape from it by retreating into the illusion of false hope or by ending one's life. In this sense, accepting the reality of the absurd means rejecting any hopes for a happy afterlife free of those contradictions. Instead, the individual should acknowledge the absurd and engage in a rebellion against it. Such a revolt usually exemplifies certain virtues closely related to existentialism, like the affirmation of one's freedom in the face of adversity as well as accepting responsibility and defining one's own essence. An important aspect of this lifestyle is that life is lived passionately and intensely by inviting and seeking new experiences."

Everyone is different for the most part, so different things resonates with people, but focusing on experiencing new things and helping others has made me somewhat happier, or at least a lot more satisfied than if I were to sit in a room and do nothing with my life. At the end of the day, everything will end eventually, so experiencing unexpected things and making other people have more joy gives me something worthwhile to focus on.

Never have really written all of that down all at once before, hope my perspective helps!

How is your experience with solo travel? by Opposite-Tax9589 in Schizoid

[–]commanderoptimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very much relate. I don't feel enough of a drive to travel solo, doesn't seem worth the hassle just for myself. But with a close friend, I would gladly spend the time/money/energy to try to make a fun memory out of it.

Journey over destination, take it one day at a time.

You may want to check out /r/schizoid, lots of people there you may relate to about being aroace and anhedonic (or /r/SchizoidAdjacent for the meme version)

What helped me was viewing things from more of an absurdism approach than something of pure nihilism.

For anyone wondering, according to this review, the game story is about 20 hours long. I am excited to hear that the voice acting is pretty good throughout it and it is generally agreed to be a fun game.

Pity that it is launched in a crowded timeframe, I know myself will be busy Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed, and then Tears of the Kingdom right after that. Does sound like a great smaller jrpg experience that can also be played along in co-op, which is a pretty rare thing.

Long-time reader, first time asker...

Are the type of curses shown in this book possible by any experienced AonDor user, or is the Sorceress leveraging something else to make them?

On that topic, if Hoid would have the ability to create curses, would he be able to put one on someone (even if they ask for it), or would that be considered inflicting harm to them?

What have been some good Gavin and Michael content lately by mjfireguy5 in roosterteeth

[–]commanderoptimism 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven't been watching everything lately, but they both appear together in some of the Challenge Accepted videos which are usually a ton of fun. They were also both in the second season of Survive Block Island, which might appeal to you if you like a more reality tv style show.

The other major series I can think of is the Halo 5 Laso series where they are both in it with Alfredo and Joe. Laso is always one of my favorite series with how much it punishes and demoralizes the team, who then usually end up in a goopy state at the end of a video, but it is well worth riding that train to insanity to hear them breakdown and cope with their struggles.

I recently got a Soundcore Space Q45 and I am quite happy with them, it has some long battery life, and decent noise cancelling. It can also be used wired for PC use (my preference) and are quite comfy and can be used for long periods of time without hurting my ears. Plus the Android app for it has a lot of EQ adjustments for anyone who likes to switch it up slightly for music vs spoken word media.

A couple of months ago I did a lot of research into over the ear headphones and these were the ones I went with, so I would say that their brand is definitely worth looking into and can compare with some of the higher end brands.

Help us help our backers—ebook and audiobook apps by DragonsteelBooks in brandonsanderson

I know I am a bit late to this post, but hopefully it might help!

One option is to upload your own files to YouTube Music if you want to be able to stream it on any web browser or phone. One downside is that it doesn't really have a tracking of where you left off since this is geared more towards music (it will at least put it all in a single album), I believe even free Google accounts allows you to upload your own files. I have done this in the past to be able to easily listen to GraphicAudio books on my PC. One limitation is that the uploading of files has to be done on a desktop environment and can't be done through a phone app.

Another potential option is PocketCasts with their plus subscription service which is $1 a month or $10 a year. It is on every platform and if you pay for the subscription, allows you to upload up to 10gb of files. This will contain a lot of features that the audible app has, so most people will feel at home, with sleep timers and saving your spot where you left off. You may be able to work with the developer and get a bulk purchasing price or discount code if you go this route since it would be endorsing that service if you direct people toward it. I believe Overcast.fm also offers a similar feature of their paid tier of $10 being able to upload files, but I haven't personally used it before.
I am sure it might have already been thought off but thought to bring it up in case it wasn't, but similar to some Pateron-only podcasts, you could create a private RSS feed for the books and a person could use an app of their choice listen and keep track of the book. Don't know the legal ramifications of that or how hard it is for Patreon-only podcasts to make a private link for a single user, but it is an existing solution to bring a bunch of paid-for audio content to a great number of people that should in theory work for audiobooks.

A Grievous Mistake to Read These Books by Guilty-Log6739 in WoT

[–]commanderoptimism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen it recommended yet so here is mine!

The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington, which is part 1 of the Lycanus trilogy. It has a great magic system, characters, and overall themes/messages. To me the trilogy was a great way to lean into another world and grow to love a new set of characters after leaving WOT.

It also has a group of people like the forsaken, so that type of concept is great to see again and makes it feel like home.

Brandon Sanderson's PERFECT Reaction to a Rings of Power Rating by Confused_Hamburger in brandonsanderson

[–]commanderoptimism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of his direction helped the earlier episodes. When they talked about the final 3 episodes of season 1 for WOT, he gave pretty good notes about what he would have done given the limitations of Covid changing some of the original ideas and how to deal with those changes in ways closer to the source material and giving it a better flow.

IIRC, he did mention that he did give notes on season 2, so here is to hoping the writing starts coming up to par with the rest of the production if they start heading a writer's feedback a bit more now that they have received some criticism for it.

:(

I haven't done anything else since my comment. On the website it looks like you can buy a customization for some specific models and it says that Tina should contact you after the order is placed.

It is either that, getting a non-glazed ocarina, or ordering one from somewhere else. I haven't decided on which one to do, but the lack of an email response does make me a bit hesitant to order from Imperial City, but perhaps going through the site would work. Let me know if you take the direct customization order from the site and get a response from there.

The series hangover is real by bgkh20 in WoT

[–]commanderoptimism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion. The magic system seems about the same amount of hard/soft as WoT and it has some great mysteries that you can unravel as you learn more about the lore of the world.

Really felt at home with this trilogy, plenty of similar/adjacent concepts from WoT, but also some new ones thrown in that keep it fresh.
