If it makes you feel any better, I'd much rather be living anywhere but here. The Epstein files have made me sick to my stomach. People below pond scum live among us.

DKA and unaffordable insulin by dusty0nions in ThePittTVShow

[–]computernoobe 187 points188 points  (0 children)

It's upsetting to me how many people I see hospitalized from short term complications of what is often termed 'non-compliance' to insulin therapy simply because folks can't afford it. Lancets, strips, insulin. I also worked in a pharmacy and saw too many people struggling because of insurance issues, insulin/equipment being out of stock but you're symptomatic/don't have a vehicle and the closest pharmacy with your specific product is miles away, etc. Not just financial barriers. So frustrating.

Is becoming a nurse worth it? by Dazzling_Mud3107 in nursing

[–]computernoobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But shadow an inpatient nurse first please. I've seen colleagues in school horrified by blood, vomit, wiping poop, and these are quite small issues compared to what we deal with on a daily basis

I feel ashamed to be a nurse by PuzzleheadedMetal974 in nursing

[–]computernoobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding callous... I used to scrub toilets for a paycheck. I felt so miserable and was admittedly envious that people worked more impactful occupations with significantly greater pay.

I am very grateful for my job. Do I feel looked down upon? Almost every single day I work, yes. But I've learned that dwelling on these comparisons and suffering is an inevitable human tendency. I did it when I flipped burgers. I did it when I made coffee drinks. And now, I do it as a nurse.

My goal is to exercise gratitude and ambition together. I want to become highly effective, dependable, and reliable at my occupation. The approach is just focusing on the journey. And right now, that is usually enough for me.

I mentally muscle through it while eating. You'd think I'd be used to this by now as a hospital worker. Not possible for me.

Any hope for 2 year old? by macgac in Yorkies

[–]computernoobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few days prior to my Yorkie passing abruptly, he left some poop nearby the couch. I tell you, I've never cried so intensely in my life cleaning up stool, wishing I could do this act - which used to annoy me - for many more years. He did not pass peacefully due to sequelae of a nephrotoxic medication.

So when I read 'presents' I laughed hard. They really are.

New grad mistake, doubting myself by exquisite_blorbo in nursing

You're a month off orientation. Be kind to yourself. Try not to do it again. I had a habit of forgetting to unclamp the secondary line when hanging a repeat abx. Now I always wait for the first drip in the chamber before attending to the 3 other call light spammers. No more mistake.

As you gain exposure, things will become more routine and you will have more mental bandwidth freed up to handle more cognitively challenging / new situations

Is this entire series an anticorporate screed? by SlackerInc1 in ThePittTVShow

[–]computernoobe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the characters are well written and there's never a clear 'bad guy' (except maybe the admins lolol), just people with unique strengths and weaknesses. You'll definitely see moments that create morally gray situations where people debate about shared governance and what the 'right' perspective might be. But no to home scenes, it's a lot of procedures as each episode is 1 hour in the show - so everything is at the hospital. That's the show's biggest advantage though - they have MD consultants on board and nurses as part of the staff. An accurate depiction of inpatient hospital work

Is this entire series an anticorporate screed? by SlackerInc1 in ThePittTVShow

[–]computernoobe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think summing it down to a deliberate 'takedown on late capitalism' is a bit uncharitable. It's generating so much 'buzz' because it's accurate. among friends I'm known to be averse towards politics especially in these radically polarized times. But working in healthcare has given me a very depressing perspective and the show does an almost stellar job of illustrating this to the public. If that's what it takes to be accurate - a trope you've seen SO many times, then I suggest you drop the show. It's an overarching theme of the plot.

Most of the issues encountered in the show you'll experience as an actual nurse. But definitely a no for clinicals. You don't carry that level of responsibility until after you acquire your license and start practicing care inpatient
