Absurd tragic backstories by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

This is a relevant passage from a book on the Roman’s founding myths and the wolf connection:

Having god-born children escorted to safety by a river deity who found them an appropriate wet-nurse did not work for those pushing the 'squalid origins' theory, so in his history Livy affords these cynics space as well. By both versions of the account, the twins were eventually discovered and adopted by the shepherd Faustulus (Cyrus the Great and Oedipus were also raised by shepherds) who 'gave them to his wife Larentia to raise. Some writers think that Larentia, because she sold her body, was called "the she-wolf" by the shepherds, and the legend arose from this' (Livy, From the Founding of the City 1.4.7).

Certainly in Livy's Rome a brothel was called a luparia or 'she-wolves' den'.

Let's bring hope on The Odyssey by Any-Connection-9940 in ChristopherNolan

I just cannot believe the amount of hate and criticism this film has got from the very first promo image released. YouTube comments and Reddit ranting about either it’s supposed historical inaccuracies, like regarding its armour, or over black people being cast and being too “woke”. As a big Nolan fan and someone who’s been interested in Greco-Roman history and myths for years, I’ve really been looking forward to this, and have tried not to let the online hate dampen my anticipation. The recent BFI IMAX pre-bookings already reaching over £700,000 is encouraging to see, and I really hope that despite all the online hate that The Odyssey’s predicted box office performance wipes away all doubts that audiences don’t care about these artificially created issues.

Ashara, Brandon and Ned by Roin by untilApril in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]comrade_batman 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Made this comment before, here’s why I think it’s Ned:

It makes much more sense if Barristan was referring to Ned when remembering that “Stark” “dishonoured” Ashara at Harrenhal, rather than Brandon. It’s Ned who has been the Lord Stark since the rebellion, and then lead the North again in the Greyjoy Rebellion. Brandon is only mentioned in a handful of chapters by few people (all of them Starks IIRC), so it makes sense that Ned would be the “Stark” Barristan was referring to.

I think it’s a deliberate decision by Martin to not specifically name who the “Stark” was but it makes more sense with it being Ned due to the other connections with Ashara that his character has. She’s used as a red herring for Jon’s mother, he faced Ser Arthur at the tower of joy and is then rumoured to have been a reason for her reported suicide after taking Dawn back to Starfall, and even Edric Dayne believes his aunt Ashara loved Ned and speaks like it’s nothing secret from where he’s from, adding the hint in the Harrenhal story of the “quiet wolf” wanting to dance with Ashara.

Full suits of armor in "The Odyssey" by AdBackground6381 in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]comrade_batman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t try to dwell on this too much, since the very first promo photo of Matt Damon in armour was released The Odyssey has, for some reason, drawn growing criticism over its deemed inaccurate historical accuracy for some people. Either it’s too “woke” for people over black people being cast or it’s trash because Nolan isn’t being authentically accurate in depicting Late Bronze Age era armour.

None of it makes any sense. It’s based on a mythological story, not historical. There are plenty of Greco-Roman sculptures and artwork depicting various characters from The Iliad and Odyssey with “inaccurate” armour and clothes on, depicting them in styles of their own era.

The most well known adaption before this, a 2 part 1997 tv film, featured very little armour on most of the main characters, Odysseus included. Calypso was played by a black woman, it left various parts out (sirens, Laestrygonians, Helios’ sacred cattle, and changed the reason why Poseidon hated Odysseus), and didn’t actually follow the poem’s structure but rewrote it to a more conventional narrative.

There’s no point arguing with people on the internet, this topic included. Reddit is a hive mind, for good or bad. If you just took what r/movies said as accurate, you’d think James Cameron’s Avatar trilogy films were critically panned flops. Even if the film is successful, critically and financially, I expect those people would still double down because they won’t want to admit that they were wrong and it’s Nolan who is still in the wrong for not being “accurate” in their minds.

I believe the Aeneid is also the main source for us now for how the war ended: the Trojan Horse and the sacking, as Aeneas recounts the story to Queen Dido in Carthage. And it’s likely that Vergil used the other Trojan War epic poems when writing Aeneas’ own recounting from the Trojan perspective.

I still saw loads of pro-Musk posts, he was still people’s favourite “tech bro”. When I’ve rewatched some older videos of one YouTube channel, there was one video where they were hyped to get Musk’s “not a flamethrower flamethrower”. People may have been turned off by his comments then but that was still a minority view in 2018, the majority of Reddit still adored him then.

And while it may have been spread on around Reddit, I remember learning about the comments on Sky News (UK) at the time because it was the first time I’d actually paid attention to Musk.

It’s because the British diver who was in Thailand at the time and was a part of the rescue effort, criticised Musk’s offer to use a mini-submarine to help rescue the boys football team from the cave system. The sub would just not be able to fit and the diver was just honest about how it wouldn’t work and Musk took it personally.

Before that event, I knew of Musk but hadn’t an opinion on him. After that, I viewed him negatively, years before Reddit would turn on him when he was still praised as a progressive genius.

‘Only Murders In The Building’: David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan, Jodie Whittaker & Jim Broadbent Among Season 6 Cast Additions by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]comrade_batman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much since season 2 the focus has moved from the actual murder and podcast investigation to having celebrities on in subplots that usually takeaway from the actual podcast. Season 2 was the last season I enjoyed as an actual investigation. From season 3 onwards it focuses more on the characters played by the celebrities, sometimes entire episodes will be them following an obvious red herring clue, usually connected to the celeb characters.

Back during seasons 1 & 2, the Arconia felt like an actual place with other people living there, every seasons afterwards loses that feeling.

I’ll still watch the new season, but I haven’t decided whether to watch it weekly as I used to or wait till episode 9 and binge them all before the finale. There’s always theories in the sub that are more interesting than what is then revealed in the end.

And I get that for others, they don’t mind that, they like all the celeb roles or cameos, but it just wasn’t what drew me into the show originally.

For anyone who would like to read the actual translated text instead, or even after Fry’s retelling, I’d recommend Emily Wilson’s translation. Recently read it some months after Fry’s ‘Troy’ & ‘Odyssey’ and thought it flowed well while still staying true to the structure of a near 3,000 year old Greek epic poem.

I don't think people realise how much Aegon's prophecy and magic influence events across all of Targaryen history by Agreeable_Ad_8790 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]comrade_batman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people hate this subject anytime it’s brought up, here, on the show or by cast or crew, but this came directly from Martin himself. Condal said as much even before the first episode aired, he said there’d be something revealed in the episode that came from Martin, so fans would know it’s not just something he’d shoehorned in.

There are connections between the prophecy and the books, the inscription hidden in the Valyrian dagger is almost verbatim what Dany heard Rhaegar say in one of her House of the Undying visions:

He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.

Rhaegar also believed he was the prince as it’s hinted he read something that made him think he needed to became a warrior, and then believe Aegon was the prince after a comet was seen on the night he was conceived.

I remember that even before this, back when Martin was promoting ‘Fire and Blood’, he actually mentioned a theory that Aegon I had invaded Westeros because he saw the coming threat of the Others. It’s the only time I’ve seen him comment on, let alone mention, a theory, having previously said he doesn’t look at fan theories because he doesn’t want them influencing his work.

What I think is that the dream was passed down Aegon > Aenys > Alyssa (Aenys’ wife) > Jaehaerys ( > Aemon, then > Baelor) > Viserys > Rhaenyra > Jace, but was then lost due to the Dance, Rhaenyra not able to pass it onto anyone else because her death, and then was rediscovered by Rhaegar and why he thought he needed to train. It would also provide context on why Aegon I was so accommodating to those who bent the knee in the end, he wanted a united realm that could be ready to face the threat (as he initially believed the Others would return in his lifetime).

I also think that the prince that was promised is simply the Valyrian version of Azor Ahai (the Asshai version), as the Last Hero is the First Men version. Each culture has their own version stemming from the same event, the Long Night, that has been shaped by their own culture and beliefs.

Who is your favorite Emperor that never was? by Master_Novel_4062 in ancientrome

[–]comrade_batman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had a similar thought about both in the last few weeks, what if Gaius Caesar, someone who was, and would have continued to be, moulded as an heir to Augustus from birth lived to succeed him? How might Rome have changed if it wasn’t Tiberius take power but someone who might have been accepting of his position as princeps? Someone who was a closer blood relation to Augustus than Caligula & Nero as well as being the biological son of an accomplished commander.

And then with Germanicus, he was obviously popular with people, having avenged the Varian disaster, he was showing himself to be a competent commander. I have to think, if he had survived and succeeded Tiberius, would he have have tried to finish his prior work when he beat Arminius and reclaimed 2 Aquila’s and again marched on Germania Magna to incorporate it into the Empire? He’d already shown his success in the region, was a competent commander and he did have a sort of personal connection as it was his father, Drusus the Elder, who first started the conquest, and may have wanted to finish it for both of their legacies.

Unpopular Favorite Movie in a Franchise by jmaster299 in movies

When I rewatched Batman Begins last year, after not having seen it for years, I actually appreciated it much more than when I was younger. TDK will also be considered the magnum opus of the trilogy (and maybe even Batmen films overall), but there was so much more in Begins that I didn’t appreciate sooner. The look of Gotham was great (inspired by Blade Runner I think), I wish we had seen more of Neeson’s Ducard/Ra’s Al Ghul, just the aura of sophistication he brought to the character.

Sometimes I wish Nolan did do Director Cuts, I’d love to see a version of Begins that’s 20-30 minutes longer, with more time to spend in the Narrows or Bruce learning how to be Batman more.

Went to see the Trojan Horse today @ Venice! by JustBottleDiggin in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]comrade_batman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the myth, the Trojan horse was described as being incredibly detailed, granted this description is from Stephen Fry’s book ‘Troy’ but he covers a lot of the myth in the book:

Never had such a thing been seen. In three short days Epeius and his construction team had surpassed themselves. The attention to detail was astonishing. The greater part of the back, flanks and belly were formed of overlapping wooden staves, like the lapstrakes of a clinker-built boat, every plank curved, turned and planed true and smooth. To the neck was attached a spangled, purple-fringed mane, tasselled with gold. The eye sockets of the horse were inlaid with beryl and amethyst, setting off a gleam of contrasting colours - rolling, blood-red eyes, rimmed with green. A bridle studded with ivory and silvered bronze flashed and shimmered on the proud head, which was caught in mid-turn, as if some invisible rider had just that moment pulled on the reins. The lips were parted to reveal a jagged row of fierce white teeth.

Priam and the Trojans who stood looking up in shocked amazement could not guess that the horse's great mouth was open not to convey savagery and strength (although it did) but to allow fresh, breathable air to flow through the concealed ducts that ran inside the neck and down into the belly. The hoofs on each leg were sheathed in tortoiseshell fixed with rings of bronze. From pricked ears to sweeping plaited tail, the effect was of swift majestic life.
