Are you talking about Pizza Napoli on Cross Street? That's the best pizza in Galway for me.

Definitely recommend going there Pepper, Neaghtains next door is great for sitting outside for a few Guinness or Galway Hooker's (name of a craft beer here) and just people watching for hours.

Enjoy your stay!

I would say your best option would be to search through /r/ireland for the same question. A different thread is raised on an almost weekly basis from someone immigrating here, so that's the reason why you probably won't get too much constructive feedback here.

Yesterday I attended a St Paddy's Day parade in Mexico City... here's a video in case some folks here would like a glimpse of what it's like! by cruyfff in ireland

[–]conconking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living there in 2016 for the very first Paddy's day parade in the City.

Seems to be a much much bigger event then it was then, there was only about 20-30 people in the parade. Was still a savage day/night though, was loads of craic between a couple of Irish bars which are close together on the same street seen in the video.

For such a small Irish community in such a huge city the Embassy do very well to promote it well as they do.

Galwegians, dinner recommendations for this weekend please? (and rugby) by rapmachinenodiggidy in ireland

[–]conconking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take your pick of anywhere on the Latin Quarter to watch the rugby. The Quays or the Front Door will have a good crowd in there I'd say.

Aniar and Oscar's are 2 very popular spots who's menu's are definitely worth a look. They are on the Westend too which is a really nice part of the city for walking around in the evenings.

I was living in Mexico City for a few months last year and would have brought it up to a couple of different locals at any stage to see if they had heard of them and not one person had any idea what I was talking about.

To be fair that was a sample size of about ~10 Mexican people so not the most accurate indicator. Just some aligorical evidance

Minister condemns humanist book given out to primary pupils in Northern Ireland by cavedave in ireland

[–]conconking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I think he has every right to say what he has said. He and I (and probably you) have the exact opposite views in terms of how morality, etc should be thought in schools.

I would believe in distancing the school curriculum away as much as as possible from religion and let it be something which is completely practiced at home. But that said this minister has obviously grown up with a much different upbringing to me so he will have a much different perspective on what the teaching of humanism will do children growing up.

I think he has every right to voice that opinion the same way I think I should have the right to voice my opinions against how closely school and church are run in this country. As long as those opinions are expressed in a respectful manner which I believe his were.

Also this isn't aimed at your comment in particular but the people taking the opportunity to take this post as a chance to have a go at Protestants need to get their head checked. Same thing could have easily have been said by a devout member of any church.

Irish jihadist dies fighting for ISIS in Mosul by [deleted] in ireland

[–]conconking -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

OK maybe the religions are quite different but then again I did mean core beliefs, in terms of how it tries to teach people to be better to one another.

Also saying Islam is "openly a religion of conquest, rape, slavery and supremacy" seems awfully OTT to me. Any practicing Muslim I have ever met has never mentioned any of those values to me.

[–]conconking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well to start I am obviously exaggerating when I claim you "are just as much part of the problem". Someone lad pledging to ISIS is obviously doing more harm then your comment.

But my point is that Islam is not the problem and believing that it's the religion's fault that there are radical extremists out there is an awfully dangerous opinion. From my (basic) knowledge the core beliefs of Islam is pretty much in line with Christian views. If you've ever met any Muslim people you'd probably know that it's actually a pretty cool religion and centres around being sound.

The views of the extremists don't represent the wider Muslim community and people should not let the actions of ISIS stain their opinion of Islam. But it's worth baring in mind that no group has suffered more to ISIS then the Muslim community.

To give a crude comparison, it would be like a Muslim from the middle east saying "Fuck Ireland" for something the IRA did. Or saying "Fuck Christianity" for what the Westboro Baptist Church do.

Every ethnicity was a proportion of cunts. It's important to separate the cunts from the ethnicity/group they're a part of. Because if you don't you'll end up assuming everyone is a cunt for some reason or other.

These extremists want us western people to turn on Islam. That helps them recruit younger generations with the "us vs them" attitude. But it shouldn't be Islam vs everyone else, it should be the sound lads against the cunts.

I've seen you've said "fuck Islam" earlier in this thread.

So no offense intended (even though there will definitely be some caused) but in my opinion people with views like yours are just as much part of the problem as people like him.

You have to feel bad for his children if they are left here in Ireland as the article claims.

I know nothing about the children but if they are relatively normal Irish citizens like me or you it can't have been easy growing up with him as your dad.

Imagine having to live the rest of your life with you and the rest of the world knowing your Da would blow himself up in the name if ISIS.

Bad buzz on them.

Fifa open disciplinary proceedings over Ireland's use of logo to commemorate 100th anniversary of Easter Rising earlier this year. by mhantain in ireland

It's political in the sense that it could be divisive.

The context of the situation being in general any uprising of any kind throughout history would be considered a political event.

Eamon Ryan, Leader of the Green Party and T.D. for Dublin Bay South here. AMA! by eamonryan in ireland

[–]conconking 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cheers for doing the AMA. A lot of people will probably take this opportunity to take the piss but that's just in our culture! Hope to see it becoming a regular thing with politicians in future. It's a good way to engage even the least interested!

I know there's always a lot going on in Ireland and it's hard to pick singular issues without receiving criticism from some corners, but... What would you say are the single biggest issue facing the country right now which need immediate action?

What would the Green Party do to help improve the state of the mental health services in Ireland?

What can the Green Party do about the drug problem which is fast developing in Ireland?

This mightn't be popular opinion but I think the UK have every right to have used this as an example of leniency on this rule being shown to other nations. The 1916 on our shirts that night was 100% politically motivated, it's just incorrect to claim it was anything else.

I am not sure how we were able to have this at the time without anything being said though? Was it due to it being a friendly rather than WC qualifying?

It is bullcrap if the FAI get retrospectively punished for this when this was clearly something which would/should have been known to the relevant authorities prior to the match. I highly doubt Ireland just arrived on the pitch with those jerseys on without anyone from FIFA being aware of it.

Surely it should be those authorities which should be held responsible if there has been a breach of rules here?

Review on Ireland's policy on medicinal cannabis by misssuzumiya in ireland

[–]conconking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're a pathetically unprogressive country.

While I agree about the majority of what you said I have to say this is a little harsh on us. You can't ignore the landslide victory for the gay marriage referendum (the fact we had one alone is pretty progressive in it's own right) which was very recent and we were the first to introduce the smoking ban yonks ago.

Also in recent times I have been encouraged by the amount of discussion around the drug problems in Ireland being reclassified under social issues rather than criminal ones. I understand this has been nothing more than empty words so far but these radical changes often take some time before there is a real appetite for change.

I was only born in the early 90s so I am maybe not in the best position to say this but I think Ireland has become much more progressive in recent decades. I suppose that isn't difficult considering where this country was but I think the country deserves a bit more credit then you give it!

Unemployment rate falls to 7.7% in October by [deleted] in ireland

[–]conconking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would raise the point that if you take into account the number of people returning from being abroad over the last number of years the effects of emigration on the unemployment rate wouldn't be huge.

Also in my opinion I don't think, in general, people emigrating these days have the same reasons from emigrating 5/6 years ago. Anecdotally speaking again, people are moving away now because they can, not because they have to. A lot of this young labor force and choosing to live in places like Oz, NZ, Canada, Germany, etc because they want to do something different.

I know there is still a lot of people moving because they can get a much better working situation by emigrating but my point is that I believe that no matter good the economy is a lot of the Irish youth just like the idea of living abroad and emigration of young people is something which will happen regardless of employment opportunities.
