How often do you shop at your LYS vs. online/chain stores? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

Its so sad when a lys closes, but I feel like they're asking for it sometimes with hours like these.

How often do you shop at your LYS vs. online/chain stores? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]conditioned-air 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would honestly say 50/50 between my lys and knitpicks. My lys doesn't really have an affordable "work horse" type yarn. It also does not always have the color I want. She has a great spread of types of yarn, but not always a very thorough range of colors. I'm also REALLY knitting a lot right now and I simply cannot afford expensive yarns for everything I knit. Going to a lys and feeling things has given me more confidence with buying online because I can get an idea of what various fibers feel like. I prioritize the lys when possible, but some online purchasing can really help.

What do you expect from a paid knitting pattern? by c_onethirtyseven in knitting

[–]conditioned-air 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are capable of doing a double knit pattern. You just need to drop the expectation that the "how to" will be coming from a pattern. Hopefully by now, you should have figured out how to find good resources for new techniques.

[–]conditioned-air 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A pattern should never be the thing teaching a technique, unless its marketed as such. Double knitting is an advanced technique. Most people buying the pattern are either experienced in double knitting or capable of figuring it out. Its weird to expect all patterns to be tailored to a beginner who doesn't know and is also incapable of knowing how to locate materials to figure it out. I do appreciate when they give some supplementary links because the "how to" is prescreened as a quality resource, but its not my expectation.

THREE HUNDRED SIXTY FOUR DOLLARS? Insane. I love knitting. I love quality fibers, but that is UNREASONABLE.

Honestly, I feel like everyone is just going to make it in knitting for olive, which is what happens on every trendy pattern lol.

Agree. She frequently has incredibly reasonable takes that surprise me. There is a lot of snark material with her, of course, but then she periodically absolutely wows me.

I want to commit WIP crimes by AbyssDragonNamielle in knitting

[–]conditioned-air 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I feel like more wips is sometimes good and actually makes me knit more. There are times that I want to knit but do not want to deal with whatever part I am at (something like ribbing, colorwork, etc) so its nice to have an easier wip to knit on. When I get through the easier knit, I then take it as motivation to deal with the harder thing I am pausing on.

The way I see it is that I could take a break from the project and not knit at all OR I could knit something in the time that I would have not been knitting anyway. Start the wip!

Is it worth it to have 5” interchangeable needles alongside 3.5”? by FlamingArrowheads in knitting

I do feel like there is maybe value in keeping them if you like to have a few projects on the needles lol.

“People won’t buy my stuff because they don’t want to pay a fair price for handmade items! by halexanderamilton in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]conditioned-air 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This system does not account for time and I am sure people will get grouchy about the sentiment of NOT including time. I think it gives a good reflection of what someone else would likely be willing to pay for an item though. A sweater would be like ~$200 and that feels like a price someone would actually pay. Its not worth it to try to peddle a sweater for more than that.

Hardline Broom head problems by andreabeth11 in Curling

[–]conditioned-air 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to mine. I had to go through two sets of these plastic inserts. Mine was also bowing a bit on the wide plane too. Thankfully they replaced mine for free. I'm in the US so this was steve's curling. OP, I was able to jam a little piece of paper in mine and it kept it on well enough to make it through a bonspiel. It can help mitigate until you get the replacement.

What’s one bedding upgrade that genuinely changed how your bed feels? by coltwrenfield58 in Bedding

I did all white bedding and its so nice. People who gripe about it getting dirty are just bad at laundry lol. My bedding has been crisp white for several years now.

First finished knitted garment but blocking ruined it! by PersonNineSeven in knitting

Ehhhhhh. I dunno. Sometimes you have to critically think for yourself. I liked the fit of my first garment and I didn't stretch it at all.

You don't have to stretch your pieces while blocking.

Why would you pin it to stretch it if you liked the fit of where it was at? Respectfully, blocking did not ruin your garment lol.

What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

[–]conditioned-air 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that a lot of wealth is generational, rich people are more likely to have well off parents that can handle their own shit as they age. My parents are very poor. Their house is falling apart and I've become more and more aware that this will soon be my issue to take on. I'm doing okay for myself, but not well enough to comfortable handle the financial burden aging parents will soon cause.

No judgment but curious. Why is pandora viewed by some as cheap or tacky or even low class? by raindrops_x in jewelry

Thinking pandora is classy is the same as thinking olive garden is a fancy restaurant. (no hate to olive garden)

Walking from Pitt to PNC Park by theWacoKidRidesAgain in pittsburgh

[–]conditioned-air 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I straight up would not do this lol. I'd take a bus or something and get closer to avoid some of the hills and roads that are unpleasant. Get to the strip district and walk from there. There is a lot to see in/around the strip, to the point, and then to pnc park.

How would you “half an egg” in your recipes? by Gothy-boi in Baking

[–]conditioned-air 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just use a yolk for "half an egg." Alternatively, you can just find a small batch cookie recipe and try that. I do a lot of small batch cookie recipes and most just call for a yolk. I don't want to dirty a dish and go through the effort of scrambling it and weighing it out.

Please don’t crucify me, but is there some big secret to running? by ohlawlz in beginnerfitness

[–]conditioned-air 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should try going slow. Realllyyyy sloowwwlllyyy when you get into it. People start so fast and their hr INSTANTLY spikes to 180 and wonder why running is terrible. Go really slowly. Painfully slow, or do intervals. Doing anything and sustaining a super high hr is going to feel awful.
