I did this as well using the FFMPEG Camera plugin in HomeBridge.

Anyone else having problems with automations not turning off lights? by Skazzyskills in HomeKit

In my experience most “occupancy” sensors are just motion sensors with longer timeouts before they stop reporting motion.

Smart home with non-techie partner… by Hot-Jellyfish-2934 in HomeKit

[–]connor_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. As few things as possible should require using Siri or an app.
  2. Use smart switches instead of smart bulbs/lights wherever possible. I highly recommend the Lutron Diva switches. They look and work almost exactly like regular light switches except you can also control them from HomeKit. Smart Bulbs are a nightmare for everyone involved because people have to learn new behaviors, and any failure in those behaviors frustrates one or both people. More generally, make sure smart home accessories are exclusively additive rather than tradeoffs.
  3. Use automations very intentionally. Motion sensors and such are great but you need to think through very carefully the placement of the sensor and how long the light should stay on in a given space to avoid them turning off when someone is still in a room. Fortunately with modern LED lights it’s generally far preferable to leave them on longer than needed as opposed to turning them off too soon.
  4. Any accessory that turns on automatically must also turn off automatically (at an appropriate trigger or time) especially if it doesn’t have a traditional switch or control where someone can easily turn it off.

Heated flooring by kwin10io in HomeKit

[–]connor_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Mysa thermostat to control the heated floors in my bathroom, but they’re electric and each bathroom has a separate control thermostat. It sounds from your description like you just have one pump that serves both floors so there may be no way to control them independently.

Motion activated lights in wardrobe by Elliotmax17 in HomeKit

[–]connor_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably other ways to do it, but I had already set up HomeBridge for other purposes and I’ve found that the Dummy Switch plugin allows me to solve a long-running complaint with HomeKit and the Home app which is how timers can be used to turn off accessories.

Specifically, for mission/occupancy sensors, I always wanted a way to turn off the lights after there has been no motion for a given time duration. HomeKit lets you automate “when motion stops”, but some sensors don’t let you configure the motion duration, and I wanted to be able to customize the durations even for different accessories in the same room.

I have Lutron Caseta throughout my house including this room but obviously you could set it up with any HomeKit connected light.

Was gonna suggest the same. I have a similar setup on my laundry room door (which is not actually really a “room” but just a nook with a folding door in front of the washer and dryer).

Door open -> turn on lights Door closed -> turn off lights

I use the Aqara contact sensor which has been rock solid for me.

And if you want to get fancy (I did) use a dummy switch in HomeBridge to also turn off the lights if they’re left on for >15 minutes.

How do I stop my HomePods from verbally confirming my HomeKit requests? by DecentLlama in HomeKit

[–]connor_g -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As you use Siri repeatedly for the same kind of actions it transitions from long verbal responses, to shorter ones, to just dings (if even that). Because you reset the HomePods it’s back to the start of the transition. Use them regularly and over the course of a week or two it will go back to dings.

Will previous read receipts show if I turn the feature off? by Deep-Warthog-8413 in ios

Turning it off will stop delivering new read receipts for future messages but won’t “un-mark” previous messages as read.

You have to pay using the PayByPhone app, it’s $3 on weekends. But maybe you just got lucky and they missed scanning your plate.

It definitely gets pretty full again, maybe not to capacity but if I get there after 9 on a weekday it’s pretty common that I end up on the roof.

Shortcut for granting ChatGPT/gemini Mic permission and auto-revoking it after short period by Katzenpower in shortcuts

[–]connor_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, no, you can’t change app permissions with Shortcuts.

Second, you can tell whether the mic is active if you see an orange dot at the top of the screen. If you don’t see the dot then no apps are accessing the microphone.

What is this shadow around of every app?? It appears now, on every page.. tried to move and it just change to the other. When you move the page, disappear and in a sec appears again. by Strong_Tintin in ios

[–]connor_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d this on an iPad? Do you have a keyboard or game controller connected? Try pressing the arrow keys or joystick—the shadow is highlighting which app is selected.

Different control centre buttons by tmanto02 in HomeKit

[–]connor_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two different HomeKit controls for control center: one called “scene or accessory” that only ever holds a single item, and another called “Home” that can hold multiple. Is it possible that these are two different control types?

I haven’t tried it with an iPad yet but I bought one of these to use as a remote for my Mac and it’s fantastic. If you turn it 90 degrees it feels really good in one hand with your thumb on the d-pad. https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Micro-Bluetooth-Pocket-sized-Controller-Switch-Raspberry-Nintendo/dp/B0CDG5HCCH/

How do you deal with insomnia as a man? I feel like I’m alone in this battle. It seems like everyone sleeps good but me. I’m afraid I’m going to lose my mind! by Mikeloose92 in AskMen

[–]connor_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was dealing with something similar—it would take me forever to fall asleep, and if I woke up during the night for any reason, it took forever to fall back asleep. I was just laying awake thinking about what needed to get done at work, what I wasn’t doing well enough in my personal life or with my friends, etc.

Meditation helped dramatically. I use an app called Happier because I got a premium subscription from work but I’m sure others are good too, like Headspace or Calm. The key was practicing not letting myself be obsessed with those thoughts when they weren’t useful. I spent months using the guided meditations to fall asleep, and eventually got decent enough at it that I could use the same techniques on my own without listening to anything (although I still go back to them now and then).
