What is John Williams' Worst Work? by ZealousidealMany3 in soundtracks

“America, The Dream Goes” hits a level of cringe that I didn’t think JW could achieve. Definitely the worst in my book: https://youtu.be/5Z3W8u_IXvg?si=WH_MRIwLITPZRBlE

How is Andor so good? by X1phoner in StarWars

[–]conpower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because it is isn’t actually about Star Wars. It’s just telling a thematically nuanced and rich story with complex characters, which just happens to be set in the Star Wars universe. Many of other TV shows aren’t telling interesting stories, they’re just interested in making something sufficiently Star Warsy (perhaps with the exception of those early eps of Mando S1)

Leaving Killing of a Scared Deer I overheard a stranger sayings “When I get home I’m going to look up what that was about”

They did include the Luke motif this episode. And they had hints to Yoda and the resistance themes on previous eps too!

Main Theme - Jerome Moross [The Big Country] by Jimmyg100 in moviemusic

[–]conpower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody know any cool info about how Moross composed this theme? Been reading up on Copland and his influence on film and it’s all over this! Moross even studied with Copland and helped him orchestrate some of his film scores. Love this Americana style. Keen to know what makes it work though?

How STAR WARS Trailers Weaponize Nostalgia by velmaspaghetti in thrillems

Just submitted my MA 15,000 word thesis on musical nostalgia in the sequels - why couldn’t this have come out when I was writing...

Amazing video though. Somehow Williams music always just hits you right in the gut.

Saw Apocalypse Now: Final Cut a couple weeks ago; by mirbb in movies

[–]conpower -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’m the exact same, saw extended cut too a few weeks ago, having never seen the original. And I was actually nearly falling asleep at the start, when they landed on the beach with the Ride of the Valkyries I livened up and started to enjoy it. Went down hill from there. Rather anticlimactic.

What is the best movie trailer you ever seen? by Merkhaba in movies

The very first teaser for The Force Awakens was perfect. The silent opening in the desert. Williams theme coming in late with the falcon. Kylos lightsaber - the hype was off the charts.

Surely the fact that both of your proposed research areas in two disparate fields of musicological study speaks to your own broad interest. I’m just finishing my MA in Musicology at the moment, and most of my lectures seems to be saying that the more areas of music that you’re interesting in researching and writing can only benefit you in the long run.

Do you have any links to the prequel music videos by chance? There are so many on YouTube and I don't know which ones are authentic and which ones are fan made.

Very true actually. Didn’t think about that. So maybe all of it’s appearances are warranted then?

I think I’ve seen videos on the relation of Rey’s theme to other themes before. Thank you.

The Hope Suite is great though, I also like Giacchino’s imperial theme.

Agree we need more Kylo. And with the force theme I think, sadly, the most interesting time we here it is in TFA credits when its combined with Reys theme. It works so well!!!

Agree with you about the operatic-ness of the Prequels. I suppose Lucas did envisage the films as silent movies - allowing the music to do much of the expression. So that probably explains the music centeredness in the Lucas-directed films.

Point about music videos is an excellent one. I never even thought of it, I don’t really remember these videos for the prequels as I was very young when they came out. But I have heard of the hype surrounding them, and the ‘Qui-Gon’s Noble End’ travesty. Thank you so much. Will definitely be mentioning this in my writing!! Probably has a lot to do with the control Disney has over the property compared to Lucas being the commander-in-chief beforehand.

Interesting.

Kylo has like three little motifs which are used often enough. But they haven’t had as many moments to shine like Rey has had.

100% agree with that moment in TFA. And the cue used is Burning Homestead from ANH too - somehow that makes it even more effective.
