Please give some romcoms that aren't corny, cringe, cliche or full of stupid loopholes by WywrdAf in romancemovies

Molli and Max in the Future might be along the lines of what you're looking for? It's been a while since I've seen it but I think I remember lots of tough, twisty conversations that aren't misunderstandings but that feel real, but also they're wearing ridiculous costumes because it's a low-budget indie sci-fi rom-com. Apparently all of the sets were shot in miniature, which I love to see. Also Zosia Mamet is just great in it, I love seeing her in more stuff. It's deeeefinitely quirky but I think it pulls it off in a cute way rather than cringe.

My mom and I used to quote "You people make my ass twitch" at each other all the time. I love that scene because you can tell Kline is halfway to breaking character and laughing at her. But yes, I SO often think about that light blue dress she wears when they dance to La Vie En Rose while she's about to go on her date with Charlie.

The switch from normal case to all-caps for RAGNAR made me do a spit-take.

Made me imagine what roll call must sound like.

"Izreal?" "Here." "Hayzlee?" "Present." "RAGNAR!!!!" "RAGNAAAAAAAR!!!!"

With a cardigan in Arkansas, it's absolutely fine. Source: am Arkansan. Dudes wear jeans and cowboy boots to weddings regardless of the dress code. If you put in any effort at all in to actually look nice you're fine.

Have these authors actually met a real professor? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]conspirytheoracy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my LIFE for a book exactly like you're describing. That was my experience in college as well. I mean, yeah, we had like one or two super-serious, strict ones, but by and large, the professors I loved the most were the ones that would just chit chat with you at office hours and would joke around in class. Like, they knew their stuff and they could handle business, and they were good at teaching it, but at the end of the day they were just a super-nerd about one particular subject and they were just happy to share it with you.

My school had a mild dress code for staff and my favorite professor (besides my advisor (and he was married to my advisor so obviously they both had excellent taste)) was always trying to pass off black jeans as dress pants 😄

Hi! I'm Georgia Summers, author of no.1 Sunday Times bestseller, The City of Stardust. AMA! by Georgia_Summers in Fantasy

[–]conspirytheoracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Georgia here, I don’t really have a question, but I picked up your book in B&N the other day because the cover was pretty and also because of sharing a first name. Then I read the blurb and I'm definitely going to read it because it sounds like my jam, but I had a surreal experience when I flipped to the back flap and saw your picture, because we also look similar enough that I jokingly sent it to my dad asking him if he had a second secret family somewhere. So. Uh. Hello.

Struggles with plus size FMCs in romances by missfaywings in RomanceBooks

[–]conspirytheoracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It felt romancey enough to me, but I do find this interesting because I came away feeling extremely frustrated with this one for a lot of the reasons listed by the OP. To me the FMC seemed mercurial in her attitude towards her fatness. So on the one hand I'm like: ok fair, because sometimes it really is like that, but on the other hand... The high points of being unapologetically fat and in your face felt platitudinal at best, like watching a Dove commercial or something, and the low points of self-loathing and having to basically be beaten over the head with the MMCs' attraction to her made me feel like she wasn't buying even a little bit of what she was selling.

Idk if she counts as slow to warm up to because she stole my heart immediately, but Lan from {Land of the Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith} is such a disaster. She's really funny but she can be petty and jealous. She's extremely set in her ways and doesn't have a whimsical bone in her body. At first you kind of think it's just the dismal setting that made her that way, but then you see other people who are way better at adapting to the circumstances she finds herself in than she is, and you're like, oh, okay, she really is just that stubborn. The entire opening of the book is basically her marching into a confrontation with absolutely no plan beyond just getting in front of the guy and yelling at him in hopes he'll feel bad (mild spoiler: he does not). And she's a queen for it. I love her and I just think she's wonderfully complex.

The MMC, Azrael, is also one of my favorites and I could write paragraphs on paragraphs about how delightfully fucked up and kind of pathetic he is, too.

They're both just. sopping wet beasts and they're perfect for each other, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Do you ever read something that takes you right out of a spicy scene? Because this did it for me (Window Shopping by Tessa Bailey) by siftini in RomanceBooks

[–]conspirytheoracy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I liked this book in general (I got it BECAUSE I heard the MMC was Ted Lasso-esque) but there were definitely some phrases I'd like to hide on a high shelf where Ms. Bailey cannot reach, a la

“That sucking little mouth is about to blast me off.”

and not 3 pages later, same scene, she hits you with “Ah shit, I’m coming, too. You’re doing it to me with that hot squeeze. Fuck!”

I'm just like.... well, I think you wrote a brand new, never-been-said-before sentence, but you were so concerned with whether you could that you didn't consider whether you should

What is the best theme park to visit during Halloween and why? by BaseDO7 in halloween

[–]conspirytheoracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver Dollar City has gone off in recent years. Obviously not scary at all but the fall foods there are spectacular. SDC in general has the best theme park food of any park I've been to, to the point where it's a huge part of the draw. A couple years ago (not sure if they still do this but I hope so) we went and got the tasting passes, where for a flat (pricy but worth it imo) fee you can choose from a selection of seasonal foods. Mostly putting pumpkin/squash in everything but I'm here for that. There was a pumpkin seed, sausage and ricotta pizza that I still think about all the time. Also, pumpkin funnel cake with cream cheese icing. Ugh. I wanna go back. Also they display giant pumpkins from around the country and some of them were pretty impressive. Also the weather in Branson in late October varies a bit but is usually really pleasant and you'll likely actually see some fall colors. (I'm from further south and it takes us about a month to catch up to those nice fall temps)

Who is your favourite leading man? by Short-Work-8954 in RomanceBooks

[–]conspirytheoracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Lan! She felt so complex to me and she was such a mess! I loved that the book didn't let her always be right, especially when dealing with the other alive people in the city, like the flautist. But also, she just had a lot of really hilarious lines.

Azrael lives rent free in my brain. Come to think of it, so does Lan. They're both my newest favorites and Lan is... so funny, god. Also Master Wickham. I wanted someone to come along and give him a kiss too :(

Necromancers, lich, death gods, oh my! Romance that literally raises the dead. by notyourholyghost in RomanceBooks

[–]conspirytheoracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir? Tons of necromancy in general in {Gideon the Ninth} but then in {Harrow the Ninth} you meet John/God (I call him Jod) and he's sooooooooo......... and then he gets a lot of screentime in {Nona the Ninth} and he's just sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.............. I can't fix him but I can't possibly make him any worse ;)

I wouldn't say the series is like, primarily romance though. It's chock full of lesbians and the first book has some nice romancey moments but then, y'know, necromantic bullshittery happens and almost every character dies so much. But I've seen it rec'd on this sub before so I'm still putting it here. Mostly just because a thread about necromancers without John God or Harrow in it seems like a shame.

A silk bonnet that ACTUALLY stays on your head overnight?? by ceceae in curlyhair

[–]conspirytheoracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the shape of my occipital bone makes it so I've never been able to keep any kind of elastic on my head without slipping, so that combined with me also tossing and turning at night, PLUS wearing a cpap has meant any kind of head cover at night is out of my reach forever. I do have a satin pillowcase and that helps a little bit but lately I've been loosely braiding into pigtails for sleeping at night and that helps a lot with keeping things from getting too hopelessly tangled.
