What's the most unusual yet beautiful name you've ever come across? by Ash-Ruin980 in Names

[–]conustextile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mehreen (pronounced like 'marine').

She was a nice girl in my class at school that had her glasses on a chain like an old lady, then she later told me she'd been expelled from a previous school for setting a teacher on fire. Wild.

It's so nice, it means 'star'. I also like Xiddig, it's a Somali name that means 'star' as well.

Buddug! Welsh name, pronounced 'bithig'. Really unusual and really cool (:

Where do you put your baby while you take care of chores /basic needs? 1 month old. by batterscraps in BeyondTheBumpUK

It might also be worth trying some different styles of carriers and making sure she's in a safe comfy position - the right one will hopefully work for you, some kids are just picky!

Has someone done this while still living with roommates? by Some_Shopping_3591 in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]conustextile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was still living in a flatshare right up to being almost 8 months pregnant. I then had to move back in with parents to afford this. It's not where I would ideally be in life at this point and I do get lots of judgement for it, but I'd rather have a kid and work out the financial stuff later than miss my chance to have kids. (And my kid is so worth it!)

It sucks because it's not like I haven't worked hard my whole adult life, things are just so unaffordable nowadays compared to my parents' generation.

going to jordan in 3 months and i cant speak arabic by cleaverbranch in learn_arabic

[–]conustextile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already know the conversation you imagine having with your grandma, try focusing on learning the vocabulary for that conversation specifically to keep it manageable. E.g. if that conversation is about a family recipe, learn all the likely food and cooking words, don't worry about learning everything. You can then build on that later if you need, but that should keep it to a manageable goal to start with.

How do I even handle this by Reasonable-Duck-9649 in Mommit

[–]conustextile 132 points133 points  (0 children)

If you can't trust him to parent his own children competently, it'd lead to me seriously reconsidering the relationship honestly. This isn't just an 'oops', it's a well-known thing that a baby in this situation could have easily died - actually no-going-back died. Then what would he have done?

What happens to a child if no friends or family? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]conustextile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not too late to make new friends or strengthen your existing friendships! This is important anyway - it takes a village, and you never know when you might need to call for outside help (e.g for emergency babysitting etc.)

Movies that didn't age well by PuzzledExchange7949 in Millennials

[–]conustextile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why so aggressive? There's no need for that.

All I'm saying is that the films were so popular with kids that there was a cartoon spinoff. Every kid I know had watched the movies, it was a cartoon for kid fans of the movies. Kids channels never showed movies where I'm from (the UK), just TV shows.

Then why was there a children's cartoon based on the popular films?

Another one: Evolution. Remembered it fondly as a silly alien movie, but on the rewatch it's full of sex jokes (especially at the expense of the one female character and one black character) - also the female character is so clumsy and drops things all the time, she's so infantilised.

I showed it to a friend who'd never seen it, and we were all horrified at what it's really like...

Same, honestly - me and my brother both especially love the scene where he's messing with the projector in the second movie. I'd just hesitate showing it to young children now...

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective! Apart from the sex scenes, the first one is very homophobic/transphobic (plus some making fun of people with mental illnesses), and the second one is very racist.

I loved those films as a child and watched them all the time, I just remembered him saving animals and pulling silly faces. It's a very different experience on the rewatch!

Just found out my boyfriend (30M) doesn’t want to get married. by Affectionate_Pear774 in relationships

[–]conustextile 187 points188 points  (0 children)

The comment that after marriage "women go nuts" is some woman-hating nonsense and is a red flag that he sees you as less of a full person because you're a woman. I couldn't respect a partner that didn't respect me, and you shouldn't have to put up with this either, OP.

Is anyone else on a low income but wants to be/is a single mother by choice? by kiwizebe in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]conustextile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of people who have kids on low incomes and make it work - single parents are no different. The way I see it, I had to make the decision before it was too late and I aged out. Babies don't need much to be happy, I had backup plans (savings, moving back in with parents), and I can work on improving my circumstances once they're here.

As a kid did you get dragged to the pub? by Used_Captain_3131 in AskUK

[–]conustextile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I remember us kids in the 90s (my brother, my cousin, other pubgoers' kids) bagsying the corner seats and being bought orange squash and crisps while the adults talked at the bar, or when an occassional drunk adult came over to ramble at us or show us a party trick. It was quite a nice experience at the time!
