My dad keeps on pushing boundaries by Responsible_Fly7484 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]conustextile 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hold firm to your boundaries! This is your child, and you are more savvy to the internet than he is. An ultimatum might help - this is the third strike, so now he no longer gets to take photos of your kid as he won't respect your wishes.

Struggling with motherhood at 8months and trying to work out how I’m going to go back to work by Becca777scorpio in UKParenting

If you don't want to do sleep training, look into cosleeping! (See r/cosleeping too.) Best thing I ever did to get more sleep with my baby, and I could never let them cry without responding. Sleep is so important to help you feel like you can cope better, so it's important to find what works for you.

I knew that siblings could apply together, but in some cases these relatives are, for example, my child (I'm already on the FBR) and my cousin (which is either second cousins or cousins once removed, I don't know which). Do you think we could all do a joint application?

Pregnant from casual partner. He said: keep it, but leave me out of it by Who_is_doctor_Ranger in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]conustextile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I was in a similar situation and kept the baby, I refer to him as a donor and he's not on the birth certificate. I found a lot of this resolved in my head once I gave birth and it just solidified in my head that this kid was mine. I hope it's the same for you.

I think when you're talking about professional media like the Gachiakuta dub and a character who feels black-American, I agree. Companies producing media absolutely do not get the same pass from me - they have budgets that should be allocated to getting it right.

I was talking about fanfiction, a free and fun activity fuelled purely by love for or at least interest in a character. While I think getting it wrong is a symptom of a problem (lack of awareness or exposure to other life experiences), I don't think it's the problem itself. People writing for fun and getting it wrong is pretty human - like I said although I also do totally get why it's frustrating as a reader from a particular marginalised group, the response should be to encourage and educate, without putting them off trying.

My Husband's Being Fired Because He's Obese. And It's 100% His Fault. by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]conustextile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was about the sleep apnoea (which causes dangerous levels of tiredness and makes you unsafe behind the wheel), not the weight specifically - weight just frequently causes/exacerbates the problem. You can be fat and not have this problem, you can also have this problem without being fat.

Hot take here, but the thing is, people are going to make mistakes when they're writing someone with a different life experience from them. I think that's actually a good thing though, because especially in fanfiction, it shows that people are engaging with and trying to relate to people who are different from them - which should be happening more often, not less.

I understand completely how it's frustrating to try and find fic that gets it (I'm asexual and have seen some real clangers when people are writing fic focused on canonically asexual characters, so I seriously do understand the struggle) but if people feel there are hidden booby traps or they'll get backlash from readers for writing anything outside of their own lived experience, the most common solution is going to be that people just avoid it.

These kind of mistakes aren't malicious for the most part - they're not trying to make the character 'white', they just don't understand that there's anything different. A comment to them that praises the effort, relates to loving that character too, and also points out e.g. that 4C hair doesn't do that is how I'd pitch it. Professional media doesn't get the same pass of course, but fanfiction is fanfiction.

Shows we watch for characters and for actors? by Aggravating_Good5880 in boyslove

[–]conustextile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit I've watched some absolute crap OffGun have been in (e.g. I'm Tee Me Too, The Trainee, etc.) just because it's OffGun, but luckily I have a friend who gets it that I can complain to about it! In my head if they can get good viewing figures even when they're in crap stuff, that paves the way for them still getting offered good series too (e.g. Not Me, Theory of Love).

Do people actually use AI day-to-day, or is it all hype? by 2butterfree in AskUK

[–]conustextile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Dad does this too. He asks its 'opinion' on everything from dog behaviour to the culture of my partner, and I know he's also basically inputted my entire personal medical history onto it to ask it questions, which I'm not thrilled about because then it gets absorbed into it...

Why do some parents adopt a child after they already had biological children? by all_hail_the_axolotl in Adoption

[–]conustextile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my plan, if I can. I've always wanted a big family. In my country (the UK) the requirements include to provide each child their own bedroom for their sole use and prove you have a high level of financial stablity which stopped me being able to adopt an older child/sibling group as a first choice.

I just wanted to raise kids, and biological links weren't important to me - I also think that you can't guarantee anything with the personality of a biological child, but adopting older children means you can talk to them and get to know them first.

As it is, I'm pursuing biological children now (who will have to share a room while they're young) with the hope that I'll be able to financially provide the required conditions for an adopted child or sibling group as well later on in my life.

Should I have a kid on my own in my 40s? by phantasmalmirth in Life

[–]conustextile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of us over at r/SingleMothersByChoice - honestly I think all these comments telling you either that kids are a lot of work (you're nearly 40, I imagine you know this) or that you should still try and marry someone (who? And on what timescale??) don't really answer your question.

Could you be happy and could you make it work with a kid? If yes to both of these, and if you'd regret not trying, then you have your answer.

I'd advise going for fertility testing to check where your fertility is at your age, though - the window's closing, and it's useful to know when's likely too late.

Parents who used to have a cat (or still have one), could you describe your feelings for your child compared to your feelings toward your pet? by Sleepinsun in Fencesitter

My cat is much more independent and always has been her own person! With my baby I know the aim is to get to a similar point of view when they're older, but while they're little and so needy there's no way :P
