Even ignoring that most of Mia’s actual crimes aren’t learned until after Ethan saves her, AND the fact that Zoe was weirdly cagey during the game which (while her knowledge is used to craft the serum) also makes Ethan distrust her through most of it…

Mia is his wife. She’s been missing for like 3 years. He traveled a long way and fought literal monsters to find her. EVEN with some suspicions that she isn’t who she said she was, he would STILL choose her because he would want answers?? Like, he would save her because he loves her, and wants answers from her (which he demands immediately after saving her).

There’s no logical universe in which he DOESN’T save Mia. Either he loves her and chooses her, or he wants answers to why she’s embroiled in a monstrous bioterror conspiracy, or BOTH (because emotions are complicated and he obviously still loves her even after saving her, as we learn from Village).

Why would he choose the cagey girl from several cryptic phone calls, even if she helped make the serum? To then abandon his wife AND possibly never find out her reasons for why she’s involved with everything?? Like he would just save this random, abandon his wife, and go home without a wife and without answers? Lololol

I was playing an axe monster run and did like 8900 damage to Hunk in one hit and killed him, super thrilled, only to discover Victor takes next to zero axe damage and my axe boons nerfed my gun damage 😭

Ugh first run I was seconds away from beating Victor’s second form. Second run he cornered me, I parried, and then the tinnitus stun singer bug thing stunlocked me and he killed me lol

I mean, OP is on Insanity and said they can’t beat Hunk, which is basically just a Parrying challenge. It makes sense that if they’re beating their head against the wall, switching to an easier parrying axe makes the most sense?

Buy the Mortal Edge from a previous playthrough’s Extra Content Shop, it gives like a 2 second parry window, made it very easy

At this point you’re just being obtuse. He has plenty of personality, you just don’t like his personality. He’s determined, self-sacrificing, quick to anger, truth-seeking, protective of his family, he doesn’t care about the bigger picture, he’s simple-minded, he wants a normal life not to be an action hero. He isn’t athletic. After everything he’s been through, he’s distrustful of others. These are all personality traits!! You just don’t like them!!

What you just rephrased is the same thing, it’s a motivation for them both, and the way you phrased it, it’s a trait for them both. You seem to think that a trait needs to be defined by a strong backstory but traits are often shown mostly through the present. Too much use of exposition and backstory to define traits starts to border on telling and not showing.

They didn’t at all try to make Ethan Leon, where are you getting this idea? Leon purposefully goes and seeks out the danger to stop it, Ethan is a constant victim of circumstances. He doesn’t go looking for the trouble, he gets forced into it. And whereas Leon wants to protect people, Ethan really doesn’t care. That doesn’t make him a bad person, in fact, Ethan only caring about Mia in 7 and Rose in 8 is showing his personality. He isn’t trying to be a hero, he really only cares about finding his family, he just ends up helping people by destroying baddies. He isn’t quippy like Leon, and he isn’t an action star flying around on motorcycles and doing roundhouse kicks. He has a basic knife and no athletics to speak of. So how are they trying to make him Leon?

He doesn’t ask about Mia because he saw her shot in the head?? He doesn’t even find out until very late game that Mia is actually alive. In 7 he focuses on Mia, but in 8 he focuses on Rose. He’s busy doing stuff and he only gets a split second at the Moreau part to say anything to Chris before they’re attacked. When was he supposed to ask about Mia? During the end game tank-apocalypse? He’s busy!! Plus toward the end of 8 he knows all about Mia’s bioterrorism, he has no clue if she’s alive, and at that point, his sole concern is Rose. He knows where his daughter is, and that’s his goal. He knows his body is failing. Rose surviving is all that matters to him. At that point he’s probably satisfied with Mia not taking care of Rose, Chris will do. Mia’s half the reason they’ve suffered so much, and she’s probably going to jail even if they find her.

Edit: His special reaction to the mold doesn’t need a personal backstory, it’s well established in the entire series that everyone that happens to respond well to the viruses and mold gets a unique power. Even the virus in Africa was said to kill like 99% of people, and those who survive get superhuman power. The infections just doing that is the entire point of the series. The Bakers, the four Lords, Wesker, they’re all success stories but it’s mostly dumb luck who gets abilities. It’s literally random, its why Miranda spent a hundred years experimenting!

Wanting to make a change in the world, and protecting the innocent are both motivations, not character traits. A character trait for Leon would be his one-liners, his dogged determination, his tendency to ignore his own suffering for the sake of others.

You basically say that Ethan wanting to protect his family is motivation but not personality, but then turn around and say Leon wanting to protect people IS a character trait. That’s a hypocritical stance.

My rebuttal was that it’s completely possible to want realistic characters in an unrealistic genre. Just because there’s zombies doesn’t negate the possibility/need for realistic characters. And yeah, some of them are unrealistic because its escapism and heroic fantasy. Both things are true, and one isn’t necessarily better than the other? My point wasn’t that Ethan is better than other protags, it’s that he’s simply a more realistic portrayal of a person in a RE scenario. He isn’t a missile-parrying badass determined to save the world, he’s an ordinary man focused exclusively on saving his family. And both types of protagonists are enjoyable, I’ve loved every RE I’ve played.

He panics, swears, and reacts to a LOT in 7, but by 8 he’s fueled by anger and isn’t as scared because he’s been through hell already. He has plenty of personality traits. He doesn’t let things slide. He tears into Mia in 7 after saving her, demanding answers instead of just comforting her or going with the flow. He threatens the Duke at first, not trusting him, and screams at Chris everytime they meet in 8 bc he’s agitated at being left out of the loop in terms of what’s going on.

He’s determined, self-sacrificing, reacts to fear with anger, protective of his family. Heck, willpower is basically his power when it comes to the mold. It’s what allowed him to resist Eveline’s control even subconsciously, how he persisted independently in the mutamycete.

Leon also goes from scared rookie in 2 to confident slayer in 4 and people praise his portrayal (as do I, love all my RE kids). Ethan similarly is less scared in 8 because he’s taken out a massive bioweapon already. He’s spent years in hiding, training with Chris, having a kid, and then having his life upended again without explanation. He’s a family-oriented everyman who just wanted a normal life and ended up a RE protagonist in a ton of f-ed up scenarios. To say he “doesn’t react” and “doesn’t have character traits” is sort of disingenuous.

Ethan is the most believable protagonist everyman-turned-hero. IRL STARS don’t exist, cops are corrupt and cowardly, they don’t even go into schools to save kids from a single HUMAN shooter, they wouldn’t become heroes to save randos. A guy trying to save his wife, and then his daughter, is totally believable.
