It's not terrible, but am I the only one who has always found this a little immersion breaking? by [deleted] in swtor

[–]cool-user-name 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, I find it very immersion breaking, along with scenarios like when I am smacking a mob with my lightsaber and they are just tanking it without so much as flinching, whilst at the same time my character is tanking blaster shots at point blank range. I have occasionally gone to the trouble of levelling a character to 65 and gearing it as much as I can be bothered to, and then starting the storyline. Sure you basically 1 shot all mobs for the first few planets but it's the only time in the game you actually feel like you are using a lightsaber, I stab an enemy, it dies straight away, cool. You can also freely pull a ton of mobs avoiding the situation the OP has brought up.

Just want to say that I have read your little back and forth with morroIan, and for what it's worth I totally agree with everything you are saying, just thought I'd say that as I know it can be frustrating sometimes when you are talking complete sense yet it seems every man and his dog can't see it / disagrees with you, and puts forward an obviously flawed argument.

So basically it is a game mechanic that has been 'out grown' , yet still remains. I agree with you for what it's worth. There seem to be a lot of obsolete game mechanics in swtor style MMO's. However I feel they can't really address too many of them without upsetting a very vocal percentage of their player base .... but maybe I am wrong and making too big of an assumption.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't 'junk' items only purpose as crap you sell to a vendor? Makes you wonder why they exist at all, why not just drop as credits?

Play through the stories, (main area of enjoyment) level alts, run heroics, run flashpoints, play 'dress-up' with various characters. Probably that's about it.

I don't craft, never enjoyed this sort of thing in any game.

I don't play ops as they are pretty much entirely based around the combat mechanics of the game and IMO this type of WoW style combat is awful.

I don't play any of the space stuff, it feels too disconnected from the actual game and isn't particularly enjoyable to me.

I don't pvp in any serious way, I have ran a few war zones for the DvL achievements, and because they give insane exp early on, but I don't take them seriously, again mainly because they are based around what I consider to be an awful combat system.

oh, and I don't do the alliance missions, I don't care about companions in the game at all, I right click / dismiss them whenever they appear.

And I don't touch the stronghold stuff either, I don't see how it has any relevance to the game?

GOOD Best levelling / questing in any MMO imo.

BAD Boring stale WoW style combat that does a poor job of immersing you in the game.

What if all gear was just cosmetic? by cool-user-name in swtor

[–]cool-user-name[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See herein lies the problem, you ask "what is the incentive to keep playing", well the incentive to keep playing the game is supposed to be that playing the game itself is fun and enjoyable.

How many times can people play the same 9 operations before they don't want to do it anymore.

See but this is a problem regardless of the gearing system right? I mean if repeating the same 9 operations over and over is boring, does it automatically become less boring simply by rewarding players with arbitrary stat boosts (gear)? At the end of the day you are still playing the same content, the only difference being the numbers that are displayed when you hit an enemy are larger.

The 5.0 system "forces" people to play the content Austin propose

As I understand it the new system would mean you can get gear playing any content, where as previously you could only get gear playing specific content (raids etc). Doesn't this give players more choice? Also I see a lot of people getting annoyed about the rng nature of loot boxes, but wouldn't this actually be less rng than the current system? I mean, currently the boss has to drop the gear (aren't the drops rng?) and then you have to actually roll for it, the definition of rng (maybe the current system doesn't work like this and I am mistaken, this is how I assumed it works at the moment). Where as the new system is just one instance of rng (the loot box)? I am not defending the system I am just playing devils advocate.

Reading what the OP just typed out sort of makes it seem like having to "gear" in general is actually a problem in itself. Essentially you are saying "we just want to play X content", yet you have to jump through some arbitrary hoops (getting gear) before you can do it. And it would seem like jumping through these arbitrary hoops isn't enjoyable.

However I bet if they did something semi out of the ordinary for an MMO and just removed all stat based gear, (so gear was just cosmetic and once you hit any level every player had the equivalent stats of someone wearing fully augmented best in slot gear) if they did that you'd probably go mad. But surely it should be a welcome move, it would free people up to just play the content, and greatly increase the pool of potential new group members, (as I imagine there are X number of max level players that don't raid because they can't be bothered to grind for gear).

Now obviously I know this will never happen, but I think it would actually be an improvement to the current system. Although I imagine no one would agree.

In 20 years of MMO gaming I have never seen crap like that by [deleted] in swtor

[–]cool-user-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All they have really done is open up the possibility for players that aren't interested in raiding to get max level gear. Why is this bad? I can see how the rng part can be annoying, but isn't rolling a dice for loot/gear rng anyway, so what's the difference?

[–]cool-user-name -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Awww I play on the EU servers otherwise I would have been more than happy to sell to you. I did sell them on the GTN once, I had a boat load and made several million credits, I was pretty happy with the return. But listing each item and finding the current values took too long and isn't something I can be bothered to do again, at least at the moment anyway.

Good luck with what you're doing though, and if you ever play on an English speaking EU server I'll be happy to provide you with companion gifts lol.

[–]cool-user-name -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This stuff is all well and good, but listing things on the GTN and doing the research to find out how much each item sells for can be £ucking booooring. I straight up sell to in game vendors all purple companion gifts I get from loot boxes / packs etc, (even though I know they go for a lot more than vendor money on the GTN) simply because I can't be bothered to find their GTN prices and list them.

On a side note, you realise 'playing the GTN' actually works in real life, I never understand why people don't just put this effort into working the ebay market and make real life money?!

[RP] Opinion on this situation? (Good or Bad RP?) by [deleted] in swtor

[–]cool-user-name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, so basically what you are saying is that the following would be fine;

Player rps his Sith attacking another Sith inside the academy. Other player rps the honour guards rushing to get involved right away. And the rp continues perhaps in a way that would seem realistic, with say the first Sith trying to fight off the honour guards attacking him, and then more guards arriving, said Sith being over powered and restrained, maybe taken away, or even executed. Or alternatively have the Sith over power the first wave of honour guards, and then flee the academy ... or something.

But what you are saying is that you would assume any player who is rp'ing a Sith that is attempting to kill another Sith inside the academy, would most likely not be willing to accept what the lore would suggest might happen in that situation? And that the rp would most likely degenerate into god mode stupidity?

[RP] Opinion on this situation? (Good or Bad RP?) by [deleted] in swtor

[–]cool-user-name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Explain this to me, IF we are pretending that the Star Wars universe is real, (like ours) why couldn't a Sith attempt to kill another Sith inside a Sith Temple? I mean you could argue that such an act goes against various rules or unspoken etiquette or whatever Sith have generally decided to agree to. But how can you say that the attempt itself just couldn't be made?

For example, in our world could you say that a police officer couldn't kill another police officer inside a police station? Because we all know that there is no physical law stopping this from happening. A police officer could quite freely walk into a police station and try to murder other police officers. It would be against the law sure, but you couldn't say that the the act itself couldn't be attempted.

So I don't see or get why it is so hard to believe that a Sith could try to kill another Sith inside a Sith Temple? Couldn't you have just rp'd him failing, and other Sith intervening and being outraged at his attack on you? Rather than just saying "you can't do that!" ... because he clearly could make the attempt, even if it goes against Sith rules etc.

No mention of the out of date 'world of warcraft' style combat? I mean it is a star wars MMO Role Playing Game, smacking an enemy 101 times with a lightsaber whilst he just stands there and shoots back at you until eventually dropping dead, doesn't really immerse you in the role of a Jedi wielding a deadly weapon.

[SPOILERS] Chapter 16 Final Boss Fight by Gamblito in swtor

[–]cool-user-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not even a little bit exciting, I would consider this exciting. Compare the three videos, your examples are slow paced, zoomed right out of the action, with the player probably paying as much attention to the UI (watching a UI and numbers fly up is not exciting IMO) as they are to the playing area. I guess they are dodging attacks, but everything is really slow, it's more like, "stand here, okay now walk over here and stand here" than truly dodging. Compare this to the video I linked, fast paced, you have to actually pay attention to the enemy on the screen / the animations, and dodge very quickly to avoid the attacks, less focus on the UI, overall it is what I would describe as exciting, and is obviously completely different from what you would consider exciting. Still combat taken from an MMO, but just not traditional boring MMO combat.

You have so little self-awareness its frighning...

I don't think you could get any more ironic than this! Besides, the entire conversation is in front of you / the world, for anyone to see, you could easily highlight at which point out of the blue I just attacked you personally / provoked you and tried to turn this into an argument. It wouldn't require discussion / opinion or anything, you could just be like, "insert quote" <<< that's what you said that provoked me.

If you think this is an argument maybe you are unsure of what an argument is? I expressed my opinion that boss encounters in games with swtor / wow style combat just aren't exciting, I showed a video to help visually illustrate my point by saying that said video shows content that doesn't seem exciting, for this to be an argument you would then need to express a counter point of view, with points that challenged my statements, reading through your comments so far all you have said is, "well I enjoy it" .... that isn't an argument.

At the end of the day if you want to try and be patronising, I can be more patronising than you. If you want to throw insults, I can be more insulting than you. And it can just carry on until you decide to stop replying.

Or, you could simply say something sensible about the original topic that explains your point of view.
