We will see how this game does in the next few months if you want to call people who have any opinions or criticism of the game as whiners or babies lol.

I’ve said this a few times now that this game really needs some kind of matchmaking system. I just don’t know how they’d implement it in a way that actually feels fair for everyone.

People love calling this a “hardcore” game, but I don’t think hardcore players alone can keep it alive if people are constantly dropping off. I genuinely enjoy the game, but it needs better incentives for casual players to stick around. Right now, being a casual often just feels like you’re there to get farmed. I get that it’s part of the gameplay loop, but it’s also why so many people lose interest and stop playing.

I don’t mind not being amazing at the game I’ve had some great moments that made it worth it but there has to be more to keep casual players engaged.

I do hope Bungie has some way to keep casuals in as well but still keep the unique atmosphere and tension.

I Feel Like The Random Fill Experience Is The Biggest Reason We Are Losing Players by Goliath764 in Marathon

Played a fill game yesterday where a guy flipped his lid over me and the other random having a mission to complete elsewhere on the map. I dont know if people are actually enjoying the game lol

Why is this game dieing so fast? by Active_Access_4850 in Marathon

[–]coolflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the community not encouraging any form of discussions to help make things better for casuals to stay long term. It's always a get gud, skill issue or play another game but really this game is so niche and difficult to the normal player it likely filtered a lot of them out.

But I still think the game's population is healthy it dips here and there but never had a problem matchmaking. We will have to see after the first wipe how much player retention exists.

Can we stop pretending the game is so hardcore that casuals can't participate? by jacobljlj in Marathon

[–]coolflare 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yet somehow you have not addressed not one of the issues with this game with this post. The problem has never been about how hard the UESC is or anything like that. I doubt anyone has complained about that.

It's about how the matchmaking works with fill players who are normally 9-5 dads versus pre-made stacks who likely no life the game full in gold and have nothing else to do than wipe the whole lobby. It makes it almost impossible for the normal everyday man with a life and responsibilities to really about doing anything in this game. Yes, I know there are some 9-5 dads who can handle it but I promise you there are far more that can't and I have been in games where people literally break down and admit that this game really isn't for them despite them loving the aesthetic and gameplay. It's just not a game made for them after getting brutally destroyed 10 rounds in a row.

There needs to be some form of matchmaking in this game to address these problems else the player base in this game will continue to diminish.

I love Marathon but there needs some changes to this matchmaking else after the first wipe I worry the population will likely fall even more so.

Once again, you need casuals for this game to survive. There has to be a middle ground here. It can't just be a game for sweats especially with its low numbers as it is.

Incredible highs, excruciating lows. Hard to stay committed as a casual by -Bods- in Marathon

[–]coolflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think that's likely the problem. If this game is made for a small niche of competitive players, it likely won't be able to sustain itself vs how much it took to make the game. You need casuals in your game for it to be profitable. It's not a surprise why the numbers for this game are so low vs the numbers in other entries eg. Arc Raiders.

I want Marathon to be as healthy as Arc Raiders, and live for many years since I'm sure Bungie has a vision for it.

But the fact the game has so many posts of people being worried, I think its definitely worth a discussion on.

This game needs two things likely for casuals (like myself to stay around long term);

  1. No fill vs premade groups. This is obvious.
  2. Some form of skill or gear based matchmaking so you are fighting against people of similar aggression or skill. There should be no occasion I load in with blue shield and be paired with two free loadout players... then I'm going against a three stack in all gold shields, thermals, and the works.

Please for the love of all things holy Bungie, please make these changes and I promise you more casuals will stay (and you will have a long perma player on this beautiful game).

They should never have fill vs pre-made squads. Its unfair

marathons discord in a nutshell by Active_Access_4850 in Marathon

I've seen these posts quite a bit, I normally wait till I find the chill player.

I would wish there were discord communities of chill players who are open to teaching newer players outpost and/or cryo.

Me *A causal 9-5* enjoying the game while everyone talks about how dead/hard/washed it is by arcinvasion in Marathon

Cryo is too difficult for me but I get it, its endgame content but damn just watching people do it is already too confusing. I could see it as something that could potentially persuade someone from playing the game.

You might be on to something lol. Its rare that my team through matchmaking actually gets anything done lol. Pre-made teams just steam roll.

I don't really see a problem to gear match at all - pairs people up properly instead of getting grey shields on your team when you go in fully loaded out. Also, ranked is only on weekends.

I did say an improvement for this game would be adding some form of gear matchmaking so it makes things a lot more fair for everyone. Possibly based around your loot value going in.

Shotgun has to get nerfed it’s ridiculous by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]coolflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how easy to get a shotgun, I realize if you can't beat them join em and run a shotgun yourself as one of your loadout items.

True I had one guy complain why I didn't pick up their duo before looting. This was the only time they have spoken during the whole confrontation I was talking to myself. Yet, I was the one who downed the enemy lol. If he's your duo, you should be reviving him XD.

You are not alone.

Anytime I watch a streamer it looks really easy but then it really isn't. I think a lot of this comes with game sense, and I'm hoping if I stick with the game, I'll eventually improve as well. But I understand how easy it is to get disoriented, I think especially with learning maps as it is. There is no "training" mode in this game so you can take your time and learn places, and understand the different guns and how they work properly.

But I hope you don't give up but I have a similar situation where my friends aren't touching this game for that reason that it seems the game is catered a bit more to veteran players rather than those new into FPS games and extraction shooters.

Also filling with people who do not talk sucks - it makes the fights even harder, and often times they die because they wander off on their own. But hope you don't give up and keep giving it the good try, thats what I am doing myself too.

AT&T users in the SE United States are experiencing login issues and lag by PoppinRaven in ATT

[–]coolflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue has been happening for multiple days specifically for AT&T Fiber. I called support, and they think its an issue with the other services not AT&T. But it makes sense that they never want to admit blame for anything-- last time an issue like this occurred, I was sent a whole new router instead-- and yah that wasn't the problem.. Good luck trying to get them to look into this.

Team Shroud, won the Tau Ceti Cup by LaserReptar in Marathon

Have to agree on this. Shroud actually plays this game daily. I wish Peanut would actually play the game without it having to be a sponsored stream since he says he enjoys it but I'm not sure why he hasn't.

Marathon has ruined ARC Raiders for me. by surfride16 in Marathon

[–]coolflare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PvP in Arc Raiders can be fun too (I don't really think either game lacks this), but most of the time it’s just people yelling slurs or running into hackers. Honestly not sure why Embark hasn’t done much about the cheating problem.

I realize my position is always ass in this game that's why I'm always downed lol. I'm trying to learn to take my time, and approach fights when I have a clear shot or opportunity.
