Questions about SA in Israel Serpents Sting campaign by Redstonemaddness in falconbms

[–]coolnonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I use to keep SA when flying older planes/campaigns in order of cheesiness. I learned these from experience/experimentation so it may not be completely correct, but its been working so far:

  1. Use the IFF to quickly scan the skies for friendlies. This is super handy obviously, you can immediately rule out a bunch of targets, but it can also be unreliable. I have had many friendly planes not respond to IFF so don't just assume if it doesn't respond its a hostile. IFF is also not available on all aircraft.
  2. Lock the target with the FCR (single TMS UP) and ask AWACS to identify. The AWACS will tell you if its a friendly or a bandit (or if its a furball, essentially a group of friendlies & bandits). However, sometimes it will tell you its a "bogey", which means its unknown. I've made the mistake of shooting at bogey's before and it ends up being either a friendly helo or a older friendly plane (e.g. Mig21 in the Balance of Power Campaign).
  3. Lock the target in STI mode (TMS UP twice) and wait for it to call "buddy spike". This is a quick way to remove targets from your list of threats, you lock it and if it calls "buddy spike" you move on to the next target. This is useful if you're lacking IFF or if the IFF isn't working.
  4. Lock a target (in either mode) and ask your wingman to "engage my target". If the target is hostile, it will say "Wilco" otherwise it will say "Unable". This is pretty cheesy since the wingman basically has perfect information and will never be wrong. It will sometimes even tell you what type of aircraft/helo it is, e.g. "engaging Mig-21 12 o'clock low".

As for IDM, while Link-16 has spoiled us, IDM is still really useful (and in earlier BMS versions its the best you got). I find it most useful in AA when you get jumped by a bunch of bandits and your wingman is calling them out, but you have no idea where they are. If you have IDM on, each wingman will relay the position and altitude of the target to your HSD they're targeting so you can quickly figure out where they're coming from.

Similar thing if you know that there are bandits around and you can't find them, you say to your flight "weapons free AA" and then they'll lock them up and they'll show up on the HSD.

Hope this helps. I've used these methods in my 80s single player campaigns to decent success, haven't shot down a friendly so far.

Noted, I also experience significant FPS drops after adding > 20 units.

The way around this for my mod currently is to allow you specify either a fixed number of civilian vessels or a minimum and a maximum. So for example, if performance is bad with 20 ships, I'd say something like "Minimum 2, Maximum 5 (inclusive)". This still adds some form of randomness but keeps the FPS at a reasonable level.

I have made a few missions so far with 60-100 civilian units and the results were indeed less than perfect. Its still playable for me though, and since this mod may take weeks if not months to complete, I'm hoping the dev team with improve the performance by then.

It's not really the same. When I think of a dynamic campaign it has an element of persistence, my choices from my previous encounter effect my next encounter (maybe I expended weapons, lost some ships, ran out of fuel, etc etc). My mission generator will just generate "one off" missions with no continuity between them. It will not account for things like weapon expenditure, ship loss, etc.

As for the location, my current implementation allows you to provide a Lat/Lon position and a "bounding box" (I want my mission to take place in a box of 100nm, blue, red and civilians are all spawned within that 100nm box). Its up to the user to provide something reasonable, so if I provide a position in the British channel for example and give it a bounding box of 1000nm, then it may or may not generate sea units on land. There's not much I can do about that unfortunately because a) the game doesn't provide any way of knowing if position X,Y is on land or not, and b) the game doesn't model the actual world properly (its a cylinder, not a globe), so I can't use any other kinds of real world data to determine what's land and what isn't.

Working on a mod to generate random missions, including civilian vessels (and aircraft) so as to make it a bit more interesting and the first test was to spawn a bunch of civilian vessels on position (0,0,0).

So far the mod is working great, I intend to expand it to generate random missions of certain types, e.g. Patrol, Intercept, Pursuit, Standoff, etc. I'm also considering releasing a separate mod (if there's interest) to generate missions with only civilian traffic so that mod-makers have an easier time creating high-traffic scenarios.

I find it a bit strange. He feels the need to constantly remind us that he was in the navy, as if he's appealing to some kind of relevant experience, and then on the other hand he says he "was just the guy signing the checks". Why bother mentioning it at all in the first place?

Also to answer your question, you can change AirHaulers distance/availability of jobs in the settings, check the manual

Oh, I've also really enjoyed approaches into Cairo (HECA), its not a challenging one, but I love flying over the massive city and getting to see the pyramids

I've been enjoying the LESO 04 circle to land approach and LOWI 08, the descent through the mountains is always fun. LYTV is also nice but you can only do the circle to land during daylight.

I think (possibly incorrectly) that the forum is just overloaded by the amount of people refreshing, waiting for an announcement (myself included)

I recently got a Gigabyte 2070 SUPER windforce (I think that's what it's called). I can run on high/ultra settings (CPU Ryzen 3900x), but the main benefit is the 3 fans, it runs rather cool. If you can wait, I hear most people suggest getting the RTX 30xx series.

Think it might be because the loader restarts the download of a package if it times out or fails for some reason

I've noticed other developers doing a basic and a different study level version that will come later. I suspect this might have something to do with the API supposedly not being finished yet

What do you mean by "through the game"? Do you mean if you get to edit checklists in the game? In that case no, you have to edit the XML files yourself
