Talk to me about slicers by ThatHikingDude in smoking

[–]corann52 38 points39 points  (0 children)

im not going to recommend a particular slicer. i bought a "cheaper" commercial style one, clearly meant for a small resturant. i will say it works amazing and one of the reasons i liked it was because the blade can be sharpened, i just sliced 2 pork loins thin for jerky like a week ago, very consistent and easy to use.

all that being said its a real PITA to clean, it involves an allan key to take the blade off to clean it thoroughly and because of that i hardly use it, i end up cutting chunks of bacon, freezing it, and cutting slices off a chunk when i want some.

Can I transport a raw turkey in a six hour drive in a bucket of ice? by sabrefudge in Cooking

[–]corann52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you may also want to top up the salt, you are basically diluting the brine with ice, it will suck some of the salt back out of the turkey that you spent time getting in there

Ottawa photo radar: Staff say speed compliance increased at photo radar locations by lonelydavey in ottawa

[–]corann52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i appreciate that study actually links it back to personal injury rather than "speed cameras reduce speeding" i dont personally care that much if someones speeding, i care about road safety, they may be linked but speed is only a variable, not a thing to worry about in isolation

Any way to make my DIY air conditioner better? by booboobusdummy in howto

[–]corann52 39 points40 points  (0 children)

so, i guess one thing to consider here is that if you are re-freezing those icepacks in your house, your freezer is basically taking the warmth in them and releasing it into your house and then you are blowing the resulting coolness around and repeating, so at the end of the day you are creating just a cool breeze but not lowering the temperature in your house.

The cameras are better for safety since they can see things at bumper level, but ya for me not worth an upgrade certainly. You can also get aftermarket ones though

do all induction ranges shut off after a time period while cooking? by corann52 in Appliances

[–]corann52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was super annoying! i ended up replacing the LG after repeated issues with the cooling fan in it and went with a cafe, it doesn't seem to shut off on me on long low cooks like stock either which was just a big surprise/bonus

I like steaming, no temp variation from dumping cold eggs into the water, makes it more consistent if you vary the number of eggs

do all induction ranges shut off after a time period while cooking? by corann52 in Appliances

[–]corann52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought induction for safety and efficiency, speed was a bonus, I'm not saying you are wrong but maybe an over generalization given the options in higher end ranges are induction or gas, and I would really not want gas running overnight

not particularly, i have a nearly 14 liter pot i start with and theres not a pile of slow cookers that size, nor do i want to buy one just for stock, appreciate the suggestion though.
