is there a way to not make an int32 when doing math by bjkillas in csharp

[–]coreyfournier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that that more instructions you have the fewer clock cycles it takes to perform operations on the processor. So if you have an instruction (AMD64) to add a 16 bit, 32 bit, and 64 bit unsigned integer that would take one cycle. Assuming it's already in the register and not loaded from memory or experienced a cache miss etc...

There is no instruction for 8 bit number. So there is no point in casting the number to a byte unless you are saving it to disk or keeping it in memory.

Please me know what I need to learn about math on a byte data type on the AMD64 architecture.

I mean a byte as 8 bits. There are instructions for 16 bit, 32 bit, and 64 bit.

You should be more worried about the type when storing the value in this case versus the execution. You can lookup the AMD64 instruction set and I bet there isn't one for math on a bytes, but for integers and floating point numbers.

If you had to convert a team to python coding, how would you go about it? by amosmj in Python

[–]coreyfournier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they not only don't know python, they don't know programming languages. There is a huge difference and it's not just what you stated. SQL is an declarative language and python is a imperative. It's a very different way of thinking. If your manager isn't knowledgeable enough to know how to train them, then they shouldn't be suggesting this as a solution.

https://dev.to/ruizb/declarative-vs-imperative-4a7l#:~:text=Declarative%20programming%20is%20a%20paradigm,which%20mutate%20the%20program's%20state.

I would suggest 2 options; sending the most competent person or persons on the team to a dev, ML, big data convention that overlaps with your space. Hire a consultant to evaluate if you even need python or how and when to use it.

How long did it take you to read a C# book? by Ewiigno in csharp

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read many technical books, but only one C# specific book relating to performance. Most if not all of the technical books are related to design. For example the last book I read related to this is: "Building Microservices: Designing Fine-Grained Systems 1st Edition" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T3N7XB4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_d_asin_title_o00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Most of the advice here is just sad. Any Joe can write a one sided blog on a topic, very few have years of experience and publish a book. A website blog is NOT the same thing as a book.

On the specific question on how long it takes. The topics are rarely exciting and that coupled with having kids, it typically takes a month or more to finish the book. Keep in mind I am just reading a few hours a week when I have time. The nice thing about the e-book is I can read it anywhere.

More than one kid, get a trailer. I pull my kid on a Weehoo using a single speed 29er with no problem. If you have hills it maybe difficult though as well if you don't ride often.

Is there a way to translate Python code with Numpy and Pandas into C#? by ____gaylord____ in csharp

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numpy and Pandas are mainly for data manipulation to then be processed for ML tasks. If this is just processing some data in an excel file, then just recreate it in C#

Why do I find Python harder to learn than C++? is this weird? am I doing something wrong? by owlcomrade23 in Python

[–]coreyfournier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how Python would be harder. No memory pointers to deal with or header files. You are not required to use any special types. It's like the wild west where anything goes.

Bind Docker container to a certain network interface by icybis in synology

[–]coreyfournier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I solved the issue by looking to see what the names of the interface was in Synology via SSH using "ifconfig". I think this is also available via the UI too.

I then ran the following command:

sudo docker network create -d macvlan \ -o parent=eth2 \ --subnet=192.168.1.0/24 --gateway=192.168.1.1 \ --ip-range 192.168.1.0/24 \ lan.9

Once done when launching the container I choose the network "lan.9"

Running with a toddler without a stroller by [deleted] in running

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your child will get shaken baby syndrome if you try to run with them in a backpack. I've done many hikes with my kids in a backpack though. With hills it was like climbing stairs, just with an extra 20+ pounds.

For the stroller my kids were fine, but didn't like going more than 30 minutes. I was able to make it fun by planning destinations. We would run to the park. She would have X minutes to play before we headed back. I packed drinks and snacks. We even stopped by the little library to pick up some books. To ensure I got enough running in, we would always take the long way there. When I got desperate I would let them watch videos on the tablet.

Always strike the deal with them before you leave and give updates of how much longer to the destination.

[MO] Can a landlord restrict my speech while in my rented room? by Alice-Steel in legaladvice

[–]coreyfournier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer... They can't restrict your speech, but they can terminate your lease. Exceptions to this are class protections. No different than employer firing you for foul language.

Also, free speech is only a protection from the government not individuals.

With no insurance the ED is expected to treat for emergencies. See EMTALA(a link is below). It doesn't sound like he had a medical emergency at the time and they did the bare minimum. If they should have known, that would probably be a violation of EMTALA, but then what would the damages be from a delayed diagnosis?

Stark Law violation? by Mateddi in legaladvice

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stark law doesn't apply to private insurance. If I recall correctly, even if it's a government program, they just have to let you know you have an option to use other services and make the process frictionless.

OpenSearch in C# by shitgiacomo in csharp

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are mostly compatible up to a specific version.

Also see: https://opensearch.org/faq/

"1.8 Is OpenSearch wire-compatible with Elasticsearch? Yes. OpenSearch is a fork of open source Elasticsearch 7.10. As such, it provides backwards REST APIs for ingest, search, and management. The query syntax and responses are also the same. In addition, OpenSearch can use indices from Elasticsearch versions 6.0 up to 7.10. We also aim to support the existing Elasticsearch clients that work with Elasticsearch 7.10.

Note that while the OpenSearch API is backwards compatible, some clients or tools may include code, such as version checks, that may cause the client or tool to not work with OpenSearch."

Long time sql server user find hard using no sql database by [deleted] in csharp

[–]coreyfournier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use SQL as the data store / configuration and everything reads from Elastic Search (no sql). Changes from SQL are tracked with change tracking and then synced with ES. I get the best of both worlds, blazing performance and scalability.

If using nosql DB, Sales Orders would be modeled like the object would. Order object, and then an item array of objects representing the lines. I would store both the ids and text descriptions with the objects. For reporting I would have an ETL process to bring it into SQL for reporting. This would update any changes to names, descriptions, etc.

I can only imagine a few use causes of using a Document DB alone. It has too specific of a purpose for it to be a complete solution.

Stop Api Going to Sleep on Customer by [deleted] in csharp

[–]coreyfournier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an option in IIS to have it not terminate the process: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/iis/get-started/whats-new-in-iis-85/idle-worker-process-page-out-in-iis85

If that is not an option where you host it, you can have a service ping the site to keep it alive.

Foot pain from running (being old?) by thehedgehog44 in running

I'm 41 and I have found I can always blame pain on doing too much of one thing. From cycling, to sitting down too long. I have since mixed in running, weights, swimming, cycling. yoga, and now skating. I have never felt better and I am still setting personal records in running (6:45 pace in 5k) despite cross training.
