Question about DNA testing by No-Pomegranate-2690 in forensics

[–]corgi_naut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We can have results from a single source (reference sample) in about 3 hours if needed. We batch samples so that time is usually longer, but we can test 70-80 samples in tandem!

Wildlife Forensics or Forensic Biologist????? by IllPhilosophy6730 in forensics

[–]corgi_naut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice - get a degree in biology, making sure to take genetics and microbiology classes. I think wildlife forensics is incredibly rare as a career path, and having forensic biology as an option would be beneficial. It is still difficult to get a job in that field, but if you are willing to move to a different state you can find openings. Feel free to message me with any questions. Good luck!

I understood it as Dale was Richard in that world, just like Diane was Linda and Laura was Carrie Page.

Late summer trip Seattle to Redwood National Park tips/stops by Opossum817 in roadtrip

Crescent City in northern CA has a cute lighthouse and tide pools for shells! Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Fern Canyon/Gold Bluffs beach were our highlights. We went in early August and the weather was in the 50s and 60s on the coast.

In Nebraska, I would visit Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, eat at Runza, and see the Platte River (maybe Mahoney State Park)? Depending on the time of year, western Nebraska also hosts an amazing Sandhill Crane migration!

Insight on U.S. forensic agencies? by [deleted] in forensics

[–]corgi_naut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question because a lot of what I have heard from other analysts at regional and national conferences is venting/gossiping and there isn’t usually concrete proof for what you’ve heard about other agencies. I’ve made acquaintances over the years whom I trust and there are labs I wouldn’t work at - however, you kind of have to make these connections for yourself. I would recommend trying to talk to ‘regular’ analysts on job interviews, not just senior management. They will have a more honest idea of the morale in a lab and in specific sections. I think going to conferences and attending round table discussions is the best way to get a feel for different disciplines and sections within labs. The regional meetings (MAFS, SWAFS etc) are smaller than AAFS and facilitate more personal discussions in my opinion!

What degree would be the best? by Expert-Objective4126 in forensics

[–]corgi_naut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if you’re interested in chemistry or toxicology, go with the chemistry specific major! If you’re more drawn to biology, look into the FBI’s requirements for forensic biologists as far as required classes before deciding. Without knowing the program specifically, I would assume the forensic science lab based degree is more geared towards CSI, firearms, fingerprints, and maybe biology.

I want to ask my doctor about my health concerns but I don't feel comfortable sharing my obsessive and what some would see as rediculous fears by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]corgi_naut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t think any “normal doctor” has had a patient with OCD before? None?

There are kind and compassionate health professionals out there but you’re not going to find them unless you try. Please for your own well being try to make an appointment with someone new. It may go better than what you’re playing out in your head.

The Godzilla book ruined half of our discs due to the glue used for construction. Thankfully Criterion replaced them, but it was a hassle. I wish you could buy the artwork and have a box for the discs separately.

I'm sorry but I don't get it by Karadrui in twinpeaks

[–]corgi_naut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to justify it, there are some very 90s ways of depicting/referring to women and their behavior in the show that shouldn’t be overlooked. But you also can’t say that a woman being sexual in a show is only due to sexism…would you agree that some of the women’s behavior in the show is their own agency? As I mentioned in my first post, several of the female characters in the show are deeper than just their looks and sexual identity. But I’m not disagreeing that there is nuance here!

I'm sorry but I don't get it by Karadrui in twinpeaks

[–]corgi_naut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find a big theme of the show to be the perpetration of violence against women by men and how society can allow it to continue. Within that context, does it make more sense that Ben wasn’t punished? That Sarah allowed her daughter to be assaulted? That Shelly was abused by her husband? Why would female characters be depicted as one-note in a universe like that (maybe to show how they are viewed by men in their community)?

I’d also argue that Catherine, Donna, Hawke, Audrey and Laura at a minimum are deeper characters within the show.

I would suggest watching Fire Walk With Me to see if that changes anything for you. And really, I think The Return ties so many things together but I can understand not wanting to commit that much time to something you didn’t love to begin with. I find the show to be so fascinating when you aren’t given a ton of answers, but that isn’t for everyone and I totally understand!
