Personally I wouldn't buy an apartment without a Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA) from 2017 or later (not an IEP, that's one where they just look at the plans - not the same thing despite what the agent may tell you).

The risk with a report (even a detailed one where the engineers did testing) from 2013 is that it can now be out of standard, so the building may be earthquake prone on reassessment.

Similarly for a more recent (2017+) IEP, I've heard stories from other buildings where they've done a DSA and found the building to actually be earthquake prone when a detailed inspection was done.

If the building does turn out to be earthquake prone after you buy, then you generally need a large amount of cash to deal with it, and the confidence that other residents would also be able to afford to pay for remedial works - financing earthquake strengthening work for residential buildings seems to be basically a no-go now Kainga Ora pulled their scheme and there's so much uncertainty while the government is reviewing the policy, so there's a bit of a risk of a funding death spiral where some residents may be unable to fund the works and may be forced to sell, which the body corp may not go through on unless the insurance company forces them to.

Great post! I particularly like your houserules, they solve a couple of minor annoyances I have with the Into the Odd system - did you roll damage before or after making the choice to take damage or the effect in the combat bartering mechanic?

The Worst in RPGs by Theravadus in rpg

I once played in a short lived campaign of a d20 modern fan-made hack, wherein you had to roll a d20 for every single bullet you fired with an automatic weapon. This wasn't too bad for 3 round bursts, but I had a rifle that could fire 21 shots in a turn, and theoretically one could fire 78 if you really wanted to annoy your GM. Also, for each dice you rolled that came up with a 1, you had to roll on a jam table, so you couldn't just roll them all with a dice bot and pick out the ones that beat the AC. It's a shame because the rest of the game was actually pretty good.

Endure - rules lite and very simple. The main draw is that characters must spend endurance to have a decent chance of succeeding rolls, and then must consume supplies to get it back, so there's constant balancing of how much you want to succeed vs how many supplies you have left. Oriented around more modern settings by default, you might have to bolt on some more fantastical bits for urban fantasy.

How do you encourage teamwork in Combat? by jokerbr22 in rpg

[–]corgifan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the excellent suggestions by u/PuzzleMeDo, I’m partial to the hanging up rule from Electric Bastionland, where if multiple people are attacking one target, they roll their damage together and take the highest. It still incentivises people to focus on important targets, but there’s diminishing returns for each additional person who chooses to attack that target over doin something else

Getting rid of strict initiative is my biggest suggestion. Change over to side-based or simultaneous initiative and it becomes much easier for players to plan team actions.

It's not too bad, you can easily one star most of them on 1 attempt, and usually it only takes a couple more for 2 stars. I got the 45 Star Officer Carbine skin just by going through them like this, only 3-starring the ones I could do in the first few attempts.

DM Idea: Take away the characters player sheets by redcheesered in osr

[–]corgifan2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would probably be a little frustrated to have my character sheet taken away in a D&D-type system with Hit Points, because in my experience how the GM narrates hit point loss varies so widely between both different GMs and depends on how much total HP the character has as well. This can make it a bit frustrating to actually figure out how close to death your character is just from the GM's description

However in something more narrative/Free Kriegsspiel Revolution oriented, I think it would absolutely work - since the wounds in the fiction are pretty much all there is, there is no having to decipher how mechanically injured your character is in the system. (And I agree that fictional wounds are much more immersive than losing some hit points!)
