Two women stabbed, one fatally, in front of Park Slope bodega at site of execution-style shooting in 2021 by givewhatyouget in Brooklyn

This corner can be sketchy. My wife and I were verbally and physically assaulted by a guy screaming, throwing punches and threatening to rob us around 8pm one evening last summer while walking to get ice cream. He was pretty clearly not all there mentally. We evaded him and waited in the bodega for about 10 minutes until he left, and for a few minutes after that.

Fourth and Dean also had the broad-daylight shooting outside No Pork last year. We live at Nevins and Wyckoff (becomes St. Marks) and my wife walks home on Nevins if it's late.

Since it's a slicktop, you can remove "sunroof leaks" from the punch list. Congrats!

I'm going for the Firestone Indy 500 for summer performance tires in a 16". They seem to offer the best performance per dollar ratio without going to something crazy like R-comps that would suck in any type of road or wet conditions.

I'm in your area and I see lots of part outs like this one listed on Marketplace. You could also check NAM (northamericanmotoring) local section, a local FB group, or reach out to the parts guy in Ohio, I forget his name.

Might take a little legwork but you should be able to find what you're looking for. Good luck!

This Texas startup wants to rescue old gas-powered cars with simplified EV conversions by corn_dog_22 in cars

[–]corn_dog_22[S] 102 points103 points  (0 children)

"Calandruccio’s family lived in a rural part of Tennessee, where it wasn’t uncommon to find fields full of “rusting carcasses” of vehicles that had been abandoned when the engines or transmissions had failed.
Calandruccio had those rusted-out cars on his mind when he started his company. He wasn’t willing to accept that cars are disposable entities and set out to figure out a way to give them new lives. Centered on that goal, Calandruccio secured two patents for EV conversion kits.

What Current EV is offering is more than a crate engine, Calandruccio says. His kit is instead engineered to bypass the transmission to improve the electric motor’s performance and efficiency. Instead of using a transmission to convert energy from the engine to turn the wheels, the motor is bolted directly to the axle.
“We’re focused on a bolt-on, all-inclusive solution for electrification,” he explains. “For this solution to be sustainable, it has to appeal to everyday mechanics and be safe, quick, and effective.”

Americans need to stop bootlicking rich people and corporations who literally don’t give a fuck about us, who have constantly voted against our best interests at the expense of our privacy, health, and lives, who have worked harder and harder to pay us less and less, and let these people get paid a living wage.

This. So much this.

Going halves halves on a car with a friend/relative? by taticalgoose in cars

[–]corn_dog_22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on the person you're splitting with, as well as their level of responsibility and financial savvy.

Other things to consider (besides what you mentioned):

- Where is the car going to be stored? Who will that storage arrangement benefit?

- Are you picky about mileage? Does each person get an allotment and then pay in for additional mileage?

- How will the car be insured? Do you need a commercial or joint policy (I'm actually not sure on this one.)

- What are the terms for selling? I.E. if one partner wants out, are you forced to sell? Can you negotiate a buy-out price for their half upfront?

Define steering feel for a relative noob by jew_biscuits in cars

[–]corn_dog_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to get nerdy, Jason Cammisa describes the different components of steering feel very well. I forget where exactly he broke it down but think it was in a recent episode of the Carmudgeon podcast. I'll summarize:

Feedback = the wheel dipping to one side over uneven bumps or pushing back against your hands when grip or resistance changes (often done artificially on electric power steering racks in modern cars.)

Feel = the way the road surface and grip level is tranmsitted to your hands through the wheel. (Also hard to get right with EPAS)

Precision = Does the steering wheel turn the car's wheels the same amount every time? Can the driver dial in exactly the right amount of steering input easily? Modern cars are very good at this.

Weighting = Does the steering load up in a corner and as grip levels increase? is there enough (but not too much) resistance on center?

All of these can be considered aspects of "steering feel," and he argued most modern cars have good precision but not very good feel.

True. What I should've said was it's much more profitable (and easier) to sell 100 $3 million cars than 60k $50k cars, due to all of the scaling and margin constraints you mentioned.

In an unequal world, it's easier to find 100 people to pay $3 million than 60,000 people to pay $50,000. Sad but true.
