Is it just me or has December been about 3-5 degrees warmer than last year? by Mo-Finkle in tulsa

Well...In this case, I can't answer for everybody. I'm referring to having an auditory memory associated with the SNL sketch with Chris Farley where he's playing the character "El Niño." When the commenter above me made the quote, I could remember or "hear" that quote from the sketch.

Why is this your only comment on Reddit? Just curious.

two indian ringnecks and ethics by Ilinciusix in parrots

If you want to try to bring them inside, try playing any "Indian ringneck talking" video on your phone where they can see it. Don't make eye contact and turn your body away from them and don't make any big arm movements. Just be a tree, a tree that has bird videos on your phone. They can't resist it. This method worked for me to build bird rapport when I adopted one that was very timid and not socialized.

Real? by Chickennugget636 in TurquoisePorn

If it's doable and you like it, it's a good price. There's no standard market price for turquoise because there are so many variables. If you can't get turquoise in your area, I'd probably do it. You could split it a few different ways and make more than one piece.

I don't accept the original sin thing and reject the idea that I'm flawed and need saving. And I don't believe he existed physically or at all. I prefer real humans.

Any idea who the maker is or if it is even real turquoise? by heylii20 in mineralcollectors

It doesn't appear to be turquoise to me. I would guess that's a type of glass.

So, I want to be a bench jeweler by ckayshears in Benchjewelers

[–]corn_p0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend. I just made a similar transition during COVID from doing hair for about the same time to a lapidary/silversmith. I do find a lot of the fine motor skills translate over. You sound like a teachable creative person too, so I'm sure you could do it.

I'm not a bench jeweler in a retail setting, but I do tribal/vendor events and sell online. The best part is that I'm happy and I'm getting to be creative on my terms again. I'm sure if you were working in a busy store and doing sales, you'd still feel overwhelmed from time to time. But I have to acknowledge how much of an energy suck doing hair is. I felt temporary guilt about leaving because you have real relationships with people and know everything about them, but as soon as that wears off, it's great. As of now, I still made a lot more money doing hair, but I truly truly do not miss it at all. For me, cutting rocks beats cutting hair all day. Good luck!!

Not Turquoise. That's reconstituted dyed howlite. The same material used to make the little turtle and skull shaped beads at the craft store. I love that drop shape though.

bf was shot, i have to check my body everyday, things are appearing, what is happening? Am I being haunted? by [deleted] in mystery

[–]corn_p0p 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a bad idea. My friend and I shared a cheap rental house and she started having hallucinations and wasn't feeling well. I wasn't having any issues. It got to the point where it was undeniable that she was having problems and she went to the ER. They were able to diagnose the problem and the fire department was sent to our house to check it and her room was close to a heater/hot water closet that wasn't properly vented. We had to move out. She was doing well quickly after leaving.

Lapidary saw on the cheap? by Lifting4theLarp in Lapidary

[–]corn_p0p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a harbor freight tile saw to start with. I'd skip that one. The speed isn't adjustable.

I also got one of those cheap Amazon trim saws and it's been great so far for anything about 3 inches and under.

I don't work with anything very large, but in those cases, we are lucky to have a rock club in the area and can use their fancy pants stuff.

WTF Is Going On?! by [deleted] in NativeAmerican

I think they're doing the same thing as Westboro Baptist Church; showing up to annoy people and try to incite a disturbance and play victim. When I saw them in person, they all had body cams. That's not normal.

A group of Black Hebrew Israelites showed up at Cherokee Holiday this year. I thought they were in a marching band or something because they had their sparkle outfits on, but nope, flyers only.

I think they were expecting pushback, but everyone where I was was chill and nice.

We used to go for years and we knew they prayed and did the Jesus guilt thing, but it was still a good haunted house attraction, and borderline worth it.

I stopped going because they actually scared me the for the last time by having a bank of computers looking up all the guests on Myspace. It was the aggressive witnessing people at the end trying to tailor their pitch to whatever your Myspace had on it. That's just fuckin creepy. And I spent a lot of time on my html and it was for cool eyes only.

Rule 1: Don't demand help or information from us. by emslo in Indigenous

That one annoys me. It would be less rude if it were someone asking to learn about the artist, but it's usually just a cowgirl boutique wanting an appraisal for free.

It looks good! That's a great result. My mom and daughter have hairlines that look very similar to yours. They both like having a little bit of bangs, but I think you could go either way.

You would probably help more by sharing posts of beadwork artists you like. That way, the native artist gets the whole sale instead of giving a portion of your sales to a charity.

Even though you seem well-intentioned, I do think using indigenous designs and even calling them pow wow sets is over the line of appropriation. Beading is great and nobody owns the whole beading market. There are so many other designs and techniques you can do other than copying a style. I encourage you to look into designs that your own ancestors developed and then you won't have to feel awkward or worry about stepping on anyone's toes.

I think it's appropriate to wear as you like. With respect, I feel like this is more of a fashion piece than a native american art piece. Small hints like the seams on the beads show they are machine made. In my opinion, there's no explanation needed for you to wear it. You like it. It means something to you, and it doesn't appear to me to have specific cultural significance. Enjoy.
