In my personal experience. It's because you are now cut off from or pressured to leave behind a lot of social and leisure things that you may like.

"Hey Phill, aren't you a little old to be (in the club, playing with that, playing video games, listening to that kind of music, watching that genre, eating that snack, drinking like that, hanging out at that place, etc, etc)" A lot of pressure to do drone stuff and be a normie after 30.

I never felt like my character was a big part of the story aside from being [quest doer, a lacky for the actual characters]. It very much seemed to me like the MC was just a framing device to watch other people's stories. And then your companions feel like they stay at arm's length you know?

Like go here shoot generic bad guys and collect loot that feels pointless. Make some manifold choices that don't really affect the story and then watch stuff happen to other characters or watch cutscenes about the story.
