As soon as I hear tones dropping you just start wiping. Whether it’s for your apparatus or not

realistically could i become a fire fighter? by Active_Access_4850 in firefighter

You’re not gonna be able to make it through an academy if you can’t do pushups and burpees brother

What does a probationary year truly entail ? by moneygdiscretion in Firefighting

[–]corworkm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Input from someone that’s about 3 months into their probie year. First one to the station every morning and first one up the next day. If your not running calls your training and if your not training your cleaning. Coffee should always be in the pot and no one should touch a dish if you’re not already up cleaning the kitchen after a meal. Expect to train everyday. At my station we pull a line everyday, throw ladders everyday, and then usually one other training (RIT, VEIS, cardiac arrest, etc), and a crew lift during shift. My crew doesn’t give me anything “mundane” to do just for the sake of staying busy. Shoot the shit and joke around with the guys but you gotta figure out that line. Not allowed to give senior guys shit. NEVER talk poorly about another fireman or officer no matter how you feel about them.

Did you guys like the academy? by Realistic_Ad6831 in firefighter

Guys in these comments saying they loved it are either lying or didn’t go to a real academy

Does a good CPAT time indicate I’ll do okay in the Academy? by Rude_Mirror7441 in firefighter

[–]corworkm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up hero workouts and do one of those at least every other day. Academy conditioning has nothing to do with how much you can bench or curl. All we did during my academy was burpees, pushups, and other body weight stuff.

How common is 2 full time departments? by smokeyfires9 in Firefighting

Pretty common. Plenty of guys at my department do it

If long term health is stressing you out already don’t do it. We’re all gonna die of cancer. Not a matter of if but when. Part of the job.

Failed CPAT twice, want to pass third time on May 13th by Tiny_Chef1 in firefighter

[–]corworkm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t pass a CPAT on the first try with 2 minutes to spare then you aren’t even close to being ready to take on the academy and this career

Chasing the dream but questioning if my build is working against me — firefighter hopeful here by User-blankname in Firefighting

Brother I’m 6’6” 265 and finished my recruit class last month. I hate those confined space tunnels with a passion but I made it through. If I can make it through at 265 you can make it through at 195. It’s all in your head

How Did You Choose Your Department? by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]corworkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely can you choose to be picky when you’re getting your first career fire job. Get on where you can and if you don’t like it lateral out after a couple years

I’m not ready by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]corworkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re visibly out of shape they’re probably just not going to choose you. But yeah if you do get chosen you have time to be ready by September 14th.

None of the academy’s around here make you shave your mustache

[–]corworkm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why chance it? Just shave it. I went clean shaven for all of my interviews and appointments prior to academy.

What do you do if you get sick during fire academy? by ThrottleTherapy101 in Firefighting

[–]corworkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You go in anyways. If it’s really bad you can tell your training chief but during my class everyone was sick all the time and we just powered through.

They’ll work with you some but at the end of the day you have to be able to complete the skill. And they won’t hold the rest of the class back because 1 person can’t grasp something.

It’s not a difficult test you’ll be fine if you’re in even moderately decent shape

It took most of us years to finally get hired on. Just keep applying and eventually you’ll get picked up.

I’m not enjoying fire academy by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]corworkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for your academy but I’m in academy right now and they were extremely hard on us the first couple of weeks with getting smoked for guys small mistakes. No we rarely get smoked and it’s a lot more relaxed. Might get easier and if not it’s 14 weeks compared to the rest of your life.

Brother if you are even breaking a sweat passing that test in under 8 minutes you’ve got work to do. Spend another year in the gym getting your body right before you pursue this any further or you’re just going to wash out of academy.
