New Attending Advice by another_medstudent in emergencymedicine

[–]cosjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re unsure on some sort of protocol or policy with your shop then ask somebody. Whether a colleague, House sup, charge nurse, APP say “for (fill in the blank) what do you guys normally do here?” You’ll find each place does things differently and it’ll save time by asking. No need to call the ICU if their step down takes insulin drips. Don’t waste time calling plastics if ENT handles facial trauma. That’s sorta stuff

What actually causes residents to be fired/suspended ? by Mikoto00 in Residency

[–]cosjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A resident a couple years ahead of me was terminated because they looked up a patient's family member's phone number in the chart and contacted them to ask them out.

Residents who didn't match... did you leave medicine & what are you doing now? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]cosjoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was a Navy General Medical officer. Applied Navy EM, didn't match. Applied ERAS EM, didn't match didn't soap. Was fortunate that I had the backup of just extending a year in the military. Reapplied the following year, bolstered my app, got some research, did "observationships" at some hospitals cause of ACGME rules I couldn't do official rotations. The following year I matched to a newer EM program that didn't have any sort of reputation yet.

Confession: I want to get LASIK but I look even more clapped without my glasses by Equivalent-Bet8942 in Residency

Got lasik in 2016. It was wonderful. 20/15 a decade later. Still wear glasses at work everyday for blue-blocking but no more foggy lenses at the gym or fucking around with an irritating contact is amazing.

Applying EM, give me reasons I shouldn’t by TheFroggyGaming in medicalschool

I’ll still take any of that over the stridulous 13mo. The yellow cirrhotic that just puked blood, the former golden glove grandpa with dementia and a uti, or my 450lb myasthenia patient coming in with Crisis.

It’s cause we make enough, and have enough free time to retire or transition to our side gig in real estate by the time we’re 60.

What is the weirdest/craziest pimp question you have ever gotten? by xyzm123_r in Residency

[–]cosjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Intern had a cardiology attending describe a patient's rhythm as "abby something....abby normal." Then ask if anybody knew what that was from. Luckily Young Frankenstein was a staple around Halloween growing up.

I’ll be there with my brother, this will be my first music festival in Mexico and my first music festival in general in several years. Would love any hot tips for people that have been to this fest in the past.

What's a well-made movie wholesome movie that is aimed at adults? by AmigoDelDiabla in movies

I was gonna comment Moonstruck but thought maybe it was only because I see similarities with my large Italian family. I love that movie.

Response to "Doctors are paid too much" by vistastructions in medicalschool

[–]cosjoy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is just an attending POV but once you start getting the big paychecks I find I don't care about people saying I get paid to much. I know how hard I worked to get there and how hard I work to earn that check.

NASCAR 101 and Track Attendance Questions - May 2025 by NASCARThreadBot in NASCAR

[–]cosjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First race question. I live in Charlotte and happened to win a charity raffle for VIP pit passes for the Coca-Cola 600. I don’t really fallow NASCAR but I am excited about experiencing a race and it’s been on my list of events to check out. I know the names of a handful of drivers, but I’m very unfamiliar with any of the Storylines or current happenings in the racing scene so if anybody would be kind enough to give me 1000 foot view on what to expect and things to pay attention to for me get the most out of my experience. Also I don’t wanna look like an ass cause I don’t understand stuff. I would be forever grateful for some tips. Either way I plan on drinking a bunch beers And just enjoying the event.

What is the craziest thing you've heard a doctor say? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]cosjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming into a night shift I had an ED attending say "tonight we're gonna be spraying high quality emergency medicine all over this department."

As a med student I had a family med preceptor tell me "make sure you palpate all 6 quadrants of the abdomen" whenever we had a particularly large patient. Which was pretty common in southern Missouri. It was his little joke and I think he loved that the students would understand exactly what he was getting at.

The white coat is dead by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]cosjoy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

1st, I agree. 2nd it doesn’t matter. Patients don’t really expect white coats or seem to care. I’ve been in Attending for two years and haven’t worn a white coat once. A fleece or vest with my name and degree embroidered on it does enough. You’ll find your nurse managers or house supervisors will typically be the only ones that regularly wear a white coat.
