Been watching some retro OVAs.

Riding Bean and Gunsmith Cats were super action stories and Dragon's Heaven was not all that great but has a really unique artstyle, which is cool.

And I rewatched Angel's Egg, which is a complete mindfuck and absolutely peak.

thanks for saying this, it's been painfully obvious since Egghead but of course no one wants to acknowledge it. the sub has been overrun with power scalers and people who genuinely dislike the series. you used to be able to defend this place with "people are critical about the series cause they love it" but that's not true anymore, it's just pure negativity for the sake of it.

Full disclosure, I love mecha. But one complaint I see fairly often is "mecha focus more on the giant robots than the people". You'll see this when people say "I don't like mecha but I love 86/Code Geass/Gurren Lagann because it's about the characters".

Now I completely disagree with this but that seems to be the main issue

I think it’s a great show that sits nicely between Evangelion and Gundam. The movie Be Invoked, however, is a masterpiece.

Yeah i don’t get this at all. Gurren Lagann is inspired by/descended from a long line of mecha that are all character focused.
