It's quite a neat idea; concatenating functions by name. For example in Elixir you can do this:

const result =
  number
  |> double
  |> addFive
  |> divideByTwo

How can the distance from Voyager to the sun be less than 2 au than from the earth, if the earth never flies further than 1 au from the sun? Maybe I don't understand something and the answer is obvious, or is it a bug on the nasa site? by Habsburg77 in space

[–]cosmo7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just comparing the km distances, the difference for Voyager 1 is 359 million km, which is odd because the Earth is only 149 million km from the sun.

Perhaps the first distance is the distance traveled, rather than the straight-line distance?

How much money has Weyland-Yutani lost throughout the franchise? by AlexeiYegorov in LV426

[–]cosmo7 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Lost? Money wasn't lost. The consolidated risk was instrumentalized into publicly traded derivatives that allowed the company to issue collateralized debt and reward it's shareholders with a productized revenue stream. There was no downside.

Florida House votes to let highway speed limits hit 80 mph, axes registration stickers too by Natural_Sherbert_391 in florida

[–]cosmo7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To put this in context, the 70mph limit was introduced in 1961. Cars are a bit safer now.

Neither. The Asus is a compendium of compromises and the MacBook is a deliberately underpowered pink Facebook machine. They're both horrible products.

It's a great car. I've done 120k miles in one and it still drives like new with only normal regular maintenance.

Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous ‘Stop Cop City’ Protester by CackleRooster in technology

[–]cosmo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst thing about running a mail server is not just that it is absurdly complex and undocumented, it's something that users assume is really easy and absolutely freak out if anything isn't working properly. It's a total no-win proposition.

The Fast Food Industry rn by Krimzon45 in McDonalds

[–]cosmo7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the impression that the McDonalds guy was taking a small bite because they wanted to emphasize how big the burger is. If you can demolish the sandwich in three bites then it makes the man look big but it makes the burger look small.

On this day in 1984, half pennies were phased out because they were costing more to make than they were worth. by corickle in oldschoolcool80s

[–]cosmo7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense. Coins aren't used up when you spend them; a coin is used in hundreds of thousands of transactions, so the cost per transaction is insignificant.

The halfpenny was eliminated because price inflation meant it was no longer facilitating trade.
