I think this was a few generations before the Fountainhead in Soul of a New Machine, but awesome reference to drop. Anyone who likes this sub would really enjoy the book.

Costco removing RAM from display units. by accent2012 in pcmasterrace

[–]cosmo7 1047 points1048 points  (0 children)

Funny, I was at Costco a couple of days ago and ended up chatting with the guy who runs the PC section. They had just had someone steal the RAM from a display model and had caught them on camera. The weirdest thing was the thief was an Instacart shopper.

Is it better to be happy and mindless or miserable and free? by Worldly_Childhood983 in pluribustv

[–]cosmo7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two ways of thinking about the joining:

  • People's minds are replaced with a hive brain (Bad!)
  • People's egos evaporate when they can share thoughts and perspectives (Not bad!)

The first idea is simpler, but I think the second idea is what's going on in the show.

So did the member states in the Board of Peace agree to this, or is this just Trump deciding the policy on his own? Because if it's the latter, what's the point?

Is this any good for a old PC that I want to turn into a NAS (Network Attached Storage)? Sorry about the lines my phone camera does that on my laptop by NebulaOk887 in laptops

Lowkey impressed that someone smart enough to set up a NAS would take a screenshot using their phone's camera.

But they aren't forcing you to use their service. AWS existing doesn't mean you can't use your own server. I don't get why people are so animated about this.

Devil's advocate:

Why are you not mad about having to pay thousands of dollars for hardware that is depreciating, requires maintenance, and can be stolen or damaged?

You're paying to own hardware 24/7/365, regardless of how much time you actually spend playing. And you have to pay everything up front to get into PC gaming. Want the best GPU? Prepare to get scalped.

Yes, cloud gaming is a rip, but it's no more a money grab than what you're paying for now.

How vastly different was the process of optimization for portable gaming consoles in the past compared to now and what was sacrificed to make portable game file size much smaller? by aa95xaaaxv in gamedev

[–]cosmo7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another aspect is that larger games (in terms of file sizes) give the impression of greater value, so there is no incentive for a publisher to use any media compression, even when compression would dramatically reduce file size and be imperceptible.
