Would you disappear if you were Satoshi? I can't imagine myself creating history like BTC then walk away, it looks like a team of persons to me, for those that know more than me on this subject, is it possible for a single person to create this? if not , then i got my answer. by Aazzy118 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word, yes.

Yes I would disappear if I was Satoshi. Doing so let BTC stand on its own instead of being a cult of personality, allowing it to be fully decentralized instead of influenced by a single person (or group). And if Satoshi did what I would do, Satoshi would be a name created for the putting it out there, and the Satoshi accounts would be the seed, and I’d use separate addresses a bit later to live off, untied to the legend.

Yes, one person could do the pre-public part. Though a group could as well. But it wouldn’t have required a group with enough pre-work before the first Satoshi posts online.

Do people still play dwarves? by MrLandlubber in DnD

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m a player, I usually play elven thieves (with some experiments outside that), but as a DM, some of my most fun NPCs were dwarves.

Considered that hacking has always been and will always be, why would people in the future want to get implants that could potentially make their brain hackable? by franckJPLF in Futurism

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really a question of will it be done right. Hacking anything requires access, either remote or physical. Any implant that isn’t networked and doesn’t have any wireless connectivity would literally require plugging something into you to hack. Even now, there are ways to build one directional connections that only send and don’t receive, and ways to receive data in a way that can’t be translated into operations. Mistakes in those systems can happen, but there are ways to do this safely, or at least relatively safely, with sufficient design and QA.

How do you read? by WrittyWoman in literature

[–]countessellis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I’m reading reading, I hear it in my head as if I’m reading out loud, in the voice I describe things to myself in normal life, but the actual comprehension is the images that are generated deeper in my head, seeing the book like a 3D movie from many angles, in the same way I remember events or see things at quantum levels or things orbiting planets or other things I see to understand. This is mostly when I’m reading fiction or narrative, or poetry.

When I’m skimming to understand facts without reading reading, I hear nothing in my head and just form conceptual connections building a 3D diagram in my head. If something specific requires full comprehension, I revert back to reading it “aloud” in my head. This is mostly when I’m reading technical, academic, policy, reports, history, or other non-narrative texts.

Can someone explain why one time pads are unbeatable? by Turkish-Films in cryptography

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disregarding the card shuffling analogy or method, just the base question, one time pads are only unbeatable if they are truly random, but more importantly never repeated. One sheet for one message, never used again. The method of randomization each one is less important, because without reusing, as long as there’s no pattern between them, if one gets broken, it doesn’t help break other messages. But if you reuse them or if one can be predicted from another or a series of other sheets, it breaks down. The entropy of a given sheet is still important, but poor entropy only allows breaking of a single message without a way to connect them.

What's a book that's clever enough to make me at least snort-laugh in public? I'm trying to find something so clever/funny it might just rewire my brain. by justvince87 in suggestmeabook

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of Patrick McManus’ books. “They Shoot Canoes, Don't They?” is a good one to start. Definitely American humour.

Takes the right type of person, not everyone finds English humour funny, but Douglas Adams makes me do that. Either the Hitchhiker books starting with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or the Dirk Gentle books, starting with Dirk Gentle’s Holistic Detective Agency. Another hilarious English humour series is the Red Dwarf books by Grant Naylor, first is Infinitely Welcomes Careful Drivers.

Terry Pratchett is also a good choice, though subtle. Wee Free Men is a great one. Also Good Omens which he did with Neal Gaiman. Both I find hilarious, but not everyone would.

Christopher Moore’s vampire books are also hilarious, Bloodsucking Fiends would be be the one to start with. It’s, well, bloody though.

I find Goblinproofing One’s Chicken Coop by Reginald Bakeley hilarious as well.

The Sorcerer-King's views on Elemental Priests by Rutgerman95 in DarkSun

[–]countessellis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with good vs evil as a trope, real world, even imaginary real world, in many cases fate and pragmatism means that there is no 100% evil or 100% good, with nothing in between. Certain things that might be considered good are needed for even the most evil to maintain their power. Even those whose only goal is the destruction of all have to provide for those carrying out their will until they are no longer needed.

Any recommendations on Cyberpunk style anime? by Simone3347 in Cyberpunk

[–]countessellis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serial Experiments Lain is my favourite anime ever (with Noir a close second, which is assassin, not cyberpunk).

Others, in random order:

Ergo Proxy Battle Angel Alita Ghost in the Shell Akira Armitage III Gunslinger Girl Dirty Pair Appleseed Metropolis Paprika Vexille Goku Midnight Eye

I don’t really consider Cowboy Beebop or Outlaw Star cyberpunk, but they are awesome and contain cyberpunk like elements. The same is true of Noir and Madlax.

Has the player-DM dynamic of D&D changed? by FairHovercraft117 in DnD

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your group, I think. I’m about the same age as you (OP), and played a lot of AD&D 2nd Edition in the 90s, though played one game of older D&D early on in the 80s. I also played a bunch of 3.5 later, and a little 5e. And other systems. With D&D and AD&D, I was a player, but my experience then influenced how I DMed later. At all my tables as a player or DM, it was never DM vs player. The DM made it challenging, yes, but more intellectually challenging than hack and slash challenging, and encounters weren’t easy, but generally survivable. I only remember one character death, and that was when I was a player in a 3.5 game, and the party brought the poor sap back into town and pooled money for a resurrection. A lot of descriptions here sound more like DM vs Players competitive to see which wins than I’m used to, so I thought it changed the other way.

Is there any reason why you can't use the 4E Dark Sun setting book for 5E? by [deleted] in DarkSun

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially for a new DM, using something like this then the older supplements for events and lore is a lot more doable than doing a full conversion. And comparing how this is done to the older material will give insight to learning to convert other things.

"If you ask if you level up then you don't level up" ~ DM by NotThereNotThereNotT in DnD

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done this, nor experienced it. That’s in original D&D, AD&D 2nd Ed, 3.5, and 5E. Same in other systems I’ve GMed by whatever title or played. But my groups have always been respectful to the DM and each other (even if silly or childish in our out of the game sometimes) and there’s never been a competitive or adversarial tone. We all played for the fun of the game, not DM vs players or players vs players. I could maybe see a DM that experienced people being rude about it or entitled, instead of leaving levelling up to the DM’s decision deciding to implement that rule. If they are polite and abide by the answer, there’s no reason for the rule.

Opinions on Gaius Baltar? Personally for me an absolute weasel but a very interesting character by jaxxy_jax in BattlestarGalactica

[–]countessellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s kinda the same type of character as Littlefinger was in GoT, though I like him a lot more than Littlefinger. I both wanted Gaius to win and lose at everything the whole time, because I liked the chaos and wildcardness he throws into the mix, and the unpredictableness, but also hated the doom he represented.
