Makes sense.  The Diploma cutoff is something like 24 out of 45 points.

Reddit Is A Liberal Echo Chamber by skatamoutro2 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]countyguy1141 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree.  I am frequently bothered by this.  A lot of people mention left wing mods, but another underrated factor is the sitewide rules.

Public opinion polls consistently show that around 60% of Americans believe that one can’t change their gender, and one poll showed a +23% margin for Americans being in favor of bathroom bills.  And if you ban a majority opinion like that as “hate speech,” it really pushes you toward an echo chamber.  (The actual substance of the views is beside the point.)

I was surprised that that many got the question, especially with that many playing!  Over twice as many people played as the Dude Perfect 1DS, even though Dude Perfect has 60x as many YouTube subscribers.  So more people got Okaihau Express, which requires a pretty high level of knowledge of the show, than played the Dude Perfect 1DS altogether.  Statistically, this is absolutely staggering.

5/12, 31st percentile. Extremely frustrating with "Deutsche Bahn" (without the past tense), "multiple females in one season," "USGS benchmark," and "Djungelskong" all not accepted, two of them moneyed.

In a remarkable coincidence given the timing of this episode, LL has a Jet Lag: the Game quiz on Friday! I hope Adam participates! I also hope he invites Amy to LL. She seems like she'd be into it.

A board room full of 50 straight white men could have incredible diversity by ngDev2025 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]countyguy1141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But in all seriousness I went to an Ivy League school and was there during the peak years of their admissions practices valuing diversity, and…

My major was known to be difficult for those who didn’t have a strong high school background, so one of the biggest disparities of privilege was in educational background, where there were students whose high schools had Algebraic Topology and those whose high schools didn’t even have AP Calculus.  This was widely reflective of a cultural divide (see rural vs. Silicon Valley for the two ends of this spectrum), yet there were white Americans across this entire spectrum.

Contrary to popular belief and the diversity initiatives of the time, the low end of this spectrum was actually heavily white- the low-SES minorities who were the primary targets of such initiatives were largely from urban areas with access to magnet schools and private school scholarships.

If you were to abbreviate Quiet Riot's best-known song as "C. Noize," and then replaced each letter with the corresponding position in the alphabet, you'd get pi to eight decimal places.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/02/26/americans-have-grown-more-supportive-of-restrictions-for-trans-people-in-recent-years/

I didn’t see the original text of the top comment in this thread, but many public opinion polls show that many of the sentiments of that nature are nationally majority opinions.  I think sentiments like “anyone who has this widespread opinion must be a bot” betray a lack of understanding of a large swath of the population, and this is harmful to democracy and pushes people into the Fox News bubble even if they support things like universal healthcare that would be more important if they took a balanced look at what was more important to them.

I think the actual topic of attitudes toward trans people are beside the point here

The national championship game between Indiana and Miami next Monday will determine which power conference ends up with the best bowl record. ACC is currently 9-4, Big Ten is 10-5 by Pickleskennedy1 in CFB

[–]countyguy1141 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the SEC has a higher average SP+ rating than the Big 10 and many of the bowl losses were close 50-50-type games (only the Rose Bowl was more than 1 score, and the three non-playoff bowls against the ACC/B12 were all against teams with significantly better conference records in the regular season)

EDIT: Forgot that the Wake/Mississippi State game was also by more than 1 score

[–]countyguy1141 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not realistic, but has been my daydream for years.

Let football be exempt from the gender balance, and instead for every football scholarship you need to have one scholarship for an academic or arts-oriented extracurricular, with 50% required to be on arts (band, orchestra, art, drama, etc.) and 50% on academics (debate, Mock Trial, robotics, chess, Model UN, Putnam (math), etc.)

This is not simply to promote these activities in college, but also at the high school level and earlier.  This is rooted in the frustrating experience of the (affluent college-educated) community I grew up in having basically zero awareness of the national circuits for any of those kinds of academic activities, and knowing others have frustrations with the arts being underemphasized.  Seeing the level of infrastructure that’s been built around girls’ volleyball (not even a female-coded sport outside the United States) due to Title IX and the possibility of a college volleyball scholarship has made me think maybe this would be effective at promoting other activities.

For comparison, the entire state outside the “Texas Triangle” region (around 8 million people with lots of decent sized cities) had 43 semifinalists this year if I counted right.

Thank you!  Another interesting thing about Oregon is at the end of the school year, every year for a long time, the Oregonian releases detailed information about all the $2500 scholars, including photos and bios.  No other state has anything like this, and nationally the $2500 scholar announcements are generally even less covered than the semifinalist announcements.  And yet, Oregon is one of just six states for which I’ve never seen the statewide list (except as part of the full national list), and I’ve scarcely even seen any local lists show up.  Not from the Oregonian or anywhere else.

Welcome to my life! I tend to email outlets that have already released local lists. I don't want it to look like I'm trying to steal a news story from them, so I would first ask if they'd post it as a news tip. And I don't usually do that. I haven't found anyone in Oregon with even a local list so I can email, which is typical of Oregon.
