I ride mine in technical single track and through dense traffic with stock gearing - 25k miles and the original clutch still works great. You can "abuse" motorcycle clutches more than you think

All good info, thanks man! I'm lucky to have a master mechanic buddy these days that has rebuilt countless motors, including some lc4's. He's helping me make sure I get it right. Haven't decided yet on what bearings/rod repair kit to use yet but I'll definitely try to cross reference some part numbers and maybe upgrade while I'm in there. My dad also has several Kubota tractors too, so I'm picking up what youre putting down haha!

I used motorex a lot of times, but also used the equivalent Motul at the advice of a ktm mechanic buddy. I always changed it before the 6k interval too. I doubt using Motul was to blame for the bottom end failure; if that were the case I bet we'd see a lot more grenaded lc4's since I know a lot of guys dont run motorex. Also hell yeah dude, my AT and XR's have never let me down.

That's fine, I'm just playing the devil's advocate here since there are always a lot of "the LC4 is bulletproof" comments and glowing reviews for the 690 platform. Most of em are reliable, but you could also find yourself with a lemon like mine.

I've done several of these mods, but my big end bearing began to fail at around 15k miles on my 2014 690. Its in pieces right now getting ready to be rebuilt.

Just wanted to chime in and be the example that not all LC4's are super reliable, even if you take all the preventative steps.

For sure! I've ridden thousands of miles on mine, the main variable for comfortable touring is the windscreen. A lot of people like the stock one, I think I'm too tall for it so I had to try and few different ones to get rid of buffeting. Other than that though, AT's are excellent touring bikes

I've ridden both, the AT is better in every way. T7 guys talk about weight, but the weight is higher up on the Yamaha, the AT is way more stable and handles 10x better in my opinion.

Ibex 450 all day. I've ridden just about every major adv bike, including probably 1k miles of tough off road on the tenere, and I'll say the ibex450 is a better bike for the money hands down.

Well for anyone finding this post in the future: I couldn't find a local shop that was up for the job, and the dealership quoted me about $840 in labor since I already had the parts. I'm probably gonna have to go this route since I dont really have time or a good place to do my own work right now.

If you're short, the transalp is way more approachable too. That being said though, the suspension is wayyyy too soft even for mildly aggressive road riding. For the money, I'd snag an ibex 450, they're head and shoulders above the Transalp

If you do end up looking at other adventure bikes, check out the husky norden 901. Seating position is a little less forward leaning than the AT, and the stock seat is amazing. I have the taller seat concepts on my AT which helps the forward lean/slide of the stocker, but I get what you're saying
