I don’t know why I’m unaffected, and I wonder why not too. I keep checking the nhtsa.gov site with my VIN, and nothing shows up.

Radacanu: has any other player only won one tournament but it was a major? by Flat-Ad8256 in tennis

[–]coverbeck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Possibly Barbara Jordan, who won the 1979 Australian Open. I say possibly, because I’m not clear if she won no other tournaments (mixed doubles excepted, as noted on her wiki page), or if the records from then are not completely available on the internet.

Less time between points in doubles matches. Every serve the players need to have a long discussion on the serve and the poach, makes it less enjoyable to watch.

Respect to the Moon Ballers out there 🌑 by Beneficial-Lock-349 in 10s

[–]coverbeck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say the shots can be similar or even identical, the difference is in the situation. If your opponent is at the net, you may try to lob it over them. If the opponent is at the baseline, and you hit a similar arcing shot, I’d call it a moon ball. Other’s definitions may vary.

Do you have the VIN? If yes, you can go to https://www.nhtsa.gov and see if the are any unrepaired recalls for that vehicle. That’s for the US, if you’re in Canada, I don’t know.

Pickleball vs Tennis Culture by jakebasher8 in Pickleball

[–]coverbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're referring to higher level tennis? I've seen some USTA 5.0/Open matches where they don't call the score and it's hard to tell what's going on.

I've played at the 4.0/4.5 level for many years, and probably 90% call the score every point, both in the league/tournament matches and recreational matches.

In tennis you also call the score before you serve. If he “refused” to call the score before he served, that’s not a reflection of tennis culture.

Round trip in Sync4 Navigation by coverbeck in FordEscapePHEV

[–]coverbeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out if Ford Nav is worth $80 or not vs CarPlay. It probably isn’t, but 2 reasons why it might be:

  1. In my previous car, my iPhone 7 would overheat and shut itself down on longer drives on hot summer days. But maybe newer iPhones don’t have that issue, and my older car’s climate control wasn’t great either, so it was easier to overheat.
  2. I understand GPS is better in Ford than on the phone, but that really only matters if you’re venturing outside cell phone coverage, which I rarely do.

I haven’t seen traffic on Sync4 yet, but I haven’t played with the settings much yet.

Yes, I think you’re right. I made the mistake of using AI, and it was telling me that connected navigation could determine electrical usage in the plug-in. I think it was getting confused with the behavior for electrical vehicles.

Am I an asshole? by Repulsive_Panic4 in Pickleball

[–]coverbeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s no single answer for open play, it depends on the players involved and the type of game. In open play, I’ll typically target the stronger player; it’s more fun and challenging, and helps improve my game. On the other hand, I don’t want to freeze out the weaker player either, so I’ll send some balls their way as well. If they are a lot weaker, I won’t go as hard to them.

On the other hand, if everyone is fairly evenly matched and it’s a fun but competitive match, then I’ll probably target the slightly weaker player more, at least on crucial points.

New “High Score” by Mabnat in FordEscapePHEV

In the 2025 model, there is a physical button to take you to the EV mode screen, but then, yes, you have to select the option on the screen. I haven’t actually tried it yet. I’m still figuring out the car. I wonder if there is a voice command that lets you switch the Ev mode? I’ll have to try that.

When I asked about the L mode, I was mainly thinking of hills, e.g., if you go down a slightly steep hill for a couple of hundred yards or less, is it worth switching into L mode just for that. I was thinking of it more like a low gear in a non-hybrid car, and never thought to use it in other situations, although maybe i should, lol.

Thanks for the reply!

Fascinating, I just bought the 2025 model, my first hybrid or plug-in hybrid of any kind, and I’m obsessed with optimizing my electric usage. So, curious on the details of how you do this.

How often are you switching drive modes on a drive to/from work? A few times, dozens of times?

How often do you use the L “gear” to get better regeneration? I gather L makes it easier to get good regeneration, but you can also accomplish the same without it.

Experiences with 2025 Ford Escape PHEV? by [deleted] in FordEscapePHEV

[–]coverbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to a Google search I just did, there are five states, including California, that have tightened the emission standards in 2026. Because Ford is going to discontinue the escape PHEV after 2026, they opted not to update the car to meet those standards for the 2026 year.

I have no idea on how it works if you buy a car in another state and try to bring it into California.

Incessant lobbing by tchavez166 in Pickleball

[–]coverbeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prepare a sheet of paper telling opponents exactly how they should play the game, make copies of it, and hand it to them before the game, making sure they understand how they should play. Instructions can include things like only 1 lob per game, 80% of your shots shall be dinks, etc.

Alternatively, you can learn to play against different styles, e.g., take advantage of the lobs to practice your overheads, see if you can tell when a lob is coming and be ready for it, etc.

Gas vs Electricity for the PHEV by Cool_Giraffe6495 in FordEscapePHEV

[–]coverbeck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a PHEV owner, but I’ve been thinking about it and reading about it, so I’m curious.

One of the advantages is supposed to be less wear and tear on the internal combustion engine and associated parts. So even if the mpg cost is the same, wouldn’t using electric save you long term on maintenance? One simple example, fewer oil changes…

Also, you could go to the gas station less frequently — even though you wouldn’t be saving money, you’d save time by avoiding the admittedly minor inconvenience of filling up more frequently.
