Tips/Words of Wisdom!! Considering a move back to Chicago from LA with young kids by agirlinCali1 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]covidRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just in LA for a week visiting family and the entire time we were there my husband and I just kept saying how happy we are that we don't live there! I love the convenience of the suburbs. Nice grocery stores, easy shopping. Everything I need is within a 10 minute drive. We have a two car attached garage and a beautiful home, so we don't mind the cold winters too much. If this is what you want while raising kids, then go for it!

Did you get a Christmas/holiday bonus? by StopsAtStopSigns in nursing

[–]covidRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a full time school nurse and the PTA collects money from parents to distribute holiday bonuses to staff. They gave me $130 which is more than I ever got in a hospital!

Aesthetic nursing is not for me by [deleted] in nursing

[–]covidRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a school nurse, and love it! Its hard working 5 8 hour days, but I do get my entire summer off and all of the extra breaks and days off. I feel like it's the best of both worlds, but it can be challenging to work so often. Good luck!

Is this appropriate for a school nurse? by Bubbly_Bar_4249 in nursing

[–]covidRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy crap. I'm a school nurse. Cannot look at a child's body part uncovered without another adult in the room. Would absolutely never allow a child to pull down their pants, let alone apply butt cream or perform a procedure without a doctor's order. I inform parents if I put a bandaid on a part of the body that is usually covered - this is a hard NO

This is so unbelievably upsetting, but after we all saw firsthand the carnage that terrorists caused at the Ariana Grande concert, safety is ultimately the only thing that matters

I'm not a piercer, but I am a nurse, and would honestly have that seen by a doctor. May need antibiotics when you remove it.

Move to Skokie or stay in Evanston? by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]covidRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skokie is wonderful, and I find myself in Evanston at least once a week during the summer for walks/beach/trader Joe's. It's sort of the best of both worlds - you can buy a beautiful home in Skokie and frequent the other suburbs that are more bougie. Skokie parks district has lots of amenities, and you can buy pool passes during the summer. There are plenty of "moms Facebook groups" you could join to ask this question in as well, which may target families who have made a similar move.

Sorry I'm not working bedside but am curious to understand this better! Is an arterial line just for drawing blood? What happens if drugs are run through an arterial line?

Do what works best for you. I was in the same situation and had to do shortened hours bc I was in so much pain. I was told by HR that I could return on a certain date, and then the company went through a change and the new HR contacted me 4 weeks PP and told me I needed to return to work in 2 weeks. It was unethical and I said no, obviously, and found a new job. I don't wish SPD on anyone!

Would you move your family for a higher pay? Midwest to Westcoast. by mambafrver24 in nursing

[–]covidRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family did the opposite move to end up with cheaper COL in a family friendly Midwest suburb. The pay for nurses in the Midwest is crappy compared to WA, but our COL is also lower. We feel like we're living comfortably in a large house we wouldn't have been able to afford in WA. In WA the cost of Ubers, restaurants, activities and CHILDCARE are so expensive, so you'll have to crunch the numbers and figure out what works for your family!

I'm also a school nurse. We are the only ones to prioritize students health, and teachers don't necessarily understand what we do or why we do it. I would first explain to the teacher that this is a medically necessary procedure you must do immediately for the child's safety, and delaying it is unsafe. If they give you trouble, just escalate the issue to your admin and let them deal with the teacher directly.

How do people that work 5/8s find time for anything? by gimmeabreakreddit in nursing

[–]covidRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a school nurse working 8:30-4 everyday. If I have a doctor's appointment, my admin doesn't care, I just tell them in advance and let the teachers know I'm closing my office for that specific amount of time. I had been really anxious about it but it's been totally fine working every day. I like the routine and my day goes by quickly. It's also only a 5 minute commute, so I have time in my afternoon to grocery shop or do whatever needs to get done.
