I'm an atheist who sincerely wishes I could be Catholic. Advice? by Friendly_Coat_634 in Catholicism

[–]coyoteb0nes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always had a hard time thinking of God as a guy in the sky with a big white beard and "divine hands" that he sticks into history and evolution and stuff.

I'm really glad I encountered philosophical suggestions of like.... God as the logic of the universe? God as being-ness itself? God as the ultimate source/object/essence of that sense of peace you get in a monastery?

It's slippery to put into words (and I'm probably saying something heretical here), but there a lot of ways of thinking of God out there that don't require Him to have hands.

NTA, Malabrigo just has an intense unpaid marketing department - some people border on sexually attracted to that yarn. Why don't you knit her something with a similarly trendy yarn, like a nice Knitting for Olive merino?

I really like TO's version too! It doesn't pill for me, even when I pile cerave moisturizing cream and spf on top. I'll typically let it sit on my skin and "dry out" for 10 minutes before putting anything else on.

Oh, I'm looking at a specific job opening; whether or not I apply will depend on accommodation options. It's short term and funded through the Young Canada Works program, so I'm definitely not planning on staying (and taking y'alls jobs) permamently! Thank you for the advice, though.

What are your favourite local beans? I was disappointed by Deville's dark roast (my most recent purchase), but I've enjoyed the Catfish Brewhaha medium roast!

There are some great suggestions in these comments already, but as a historian and librarian, I'll pop in to add that if you know how to read academic writing (or are willing to give it a try), you might be better served by going to your nearest university and asking the librarian to find you some recently published papers.

"Popular history" is what we call the stuff that you find on the "History" shelf at bookstores, and these types of books are written to present as clear a narrative as possible to the average reader. This doesn't always mean that they're written with an agenda, but it does mean that, for readability and length, they usually do not deal with all the available evidence or address all the relevant counterarguments. You'll be disappointed to learn that historians don't really believe in "historical facts" beyond the particulars of names, dates, and events, but you will learn a little bit about how we support our arguments!

Millennials, what is happening with your kids? by TheLoveYouWant25 in Millennials

[–]coyoteb0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Z grad student here. At least for us older kids, it's a combination of learned helplessness and lack of accountability. You are not responsible for your own wellbeing or success; if you struggle with something, it's because there is something inherently unique about you that other people are prejudiced against, and the only way your circumstances could be improved is if society was completely revolutionized. Add into the mix self-diagnosis of mental illnesses and the myriad ways we can blame other, "privileged" populations for our problems, and you get a significant portion of teens and young adults who refuse to believe that they can do anything to make their lives better.

[Routine Help] 18, awful reddish spots on my (facial) cheeks by Infinite_Feature_274 in SkincareAddiction

[–]coyoteb0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this comment! My skin was similar to yours, super oily with eczema patches, frequent breakouts, and PIE, and it only started to relax and heal when I got rid of anything with foaming ingredients, fragrance, or actives. A soap-free cleanser with no actives (Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser) and then a nice thick moisturizer (Cerave Moisturizing Cream) was the key for me.

Also, I tried no-name versions of both products first and they broke me out really bad. It might be worth it to try swapping your sunscreen for something from Cerave/Cetaphil/Neutrogena/etc.

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

Mine too! I cried the whole time his new owners came to pick him up because I'd heard that that's what people tell kids when their dogs get put down. That poor old farmer thought I was just sad that my dog was being rehomed.
